This is not so much a resort for the indulged and privileged as it is a chance to feel what it is like to be the guest in a very rich, and tasteful, person's home. While the dimensions are on the grand scale, there pervades a sense of intimacy and illusion that every staff member is obsessed with only your comfort.
The Seigneur assoluta of Glenmere is Alan who commands a brilliantly trained and gracious staff that seem to make you feel that you are their first and only guest; they delight in your arrival, anticipate your every need and seem bereft at your departure. They cook for you in dueling restaurants for your palette-one supremely formal and bewitching, even at breakfast and the other cozy and comforting in its clubby confines. The food is world class and the portions, especially the desserts, are extravagant. Look among your fellow diners and you will find a conspiracy of gluttonous exultation. Glenmere knows one needs to indulge from time to time and that such indiscretions are best served over the top.
Of course to balance this, there is an equally munificent spa with perhaps the finest relaxation salon ever produced. The staff there attends to the senses corporeal as ardently as the chef feeds the palette. A gym that is special for its ability to inspire you to work up an appetite for more dining indulgence rounds out the amenty offering.
Beyond the obvious, Glenmere embraces its guests with winning details from a Nespresso and snacking station near the bedrooms to books that are stacked everywhere, from the gameroom, the guestrooms and even the spa. Music proliferates throughout the common areas to tranquilize the soul.
Glenmere is a gem that you will probably want to keep a secret, because once a guest you will be a devoted returning one hoping ,that despite all the changes in the outside world, the experience of Glenmere will stand permanently in its present perfection.

What a fabulous gem of a hotel! We felt as if we'd gone to a rich friend's house who left us their staff for our visit. Subtle touches throughout the mansion give you that "right at home" feeling. We loved starting the day with a coffee from the Nespresso machine just outside our room, playing backgammon in the library with a drink before dinner, and perusing the fabulous collection of books always within reach. The staff hit just the right balance of anticipating our needs without seeming over bearing or ever present. Allen and Dan have created a magical oasis that we will be sure to visit again.

We thought the facilities were very nice and the dining experience was good. And for a quick getaway from NYC, it is very convenient. That said, we didn't find many things to do and the property seems really expensive for what it is - we think a property like Ocean House in RI (farther away) offers better value. Nothing wrong with Glenmere, but nothing stood out for us, either.

I wanted to love this place-I read the reviews of others; I am an (extreme) fan of Relais & Chateaux; I love upstate NY, and renovated Guilded Age Mansions "float my boat"-but sadly Glenmere fell short. Dinner our first night was in the casual restaurant, and it was the better of the two nights. Service is really not good--dinner was presented with "here ya go" and little else-but the food was fine, and the short wine list was fairly priced. The server was also, I think, the parking valet. The second night was in the formal dining room where, unbelievably, the ambiance was ruined by a drunk party of 6 being general louts when they where not loudly telling dirty jokes in the lounge area next to the dining room. Luckily they decamped into a private room, and so the din lessened. Frankly, however, the food just is not very good and the winelist was totally inadequate for a property of this stature (and price). The room was lovely, as was the bath-but in all other aspects, Glenmere disappointed. The grounds, in particular, were oddly unkempt. For example, we walked around the outside pool area and it was left totally unattended since the end of season--complete with tattered magazines blowing in the wind. For all the money sunk into the rehab of this place-som more thought should have been given to the items that separate the ordinary from the special.

I loved the hotel when we visited during the summer but is a completely different but wonderful experience in the fall.

I was really impressed that two issues I noted in my previous review were rectified. That is service. It is also a true testament to how hard the staff works to ensure the experience is blissful which it was.

We arrived early and were thrilled to receive early check-in. Lunch was in the casual Frogs End which was yummy. The cheese platter with warm flat bread was decadent.

Hot chocolate on the terrace was a perfect way to spend the afternoon as was reading in the library. The apple season had finished but driving through the autumnal countryside was so pretty.

Dinner in The Supper Club is just beautiful and delicious. The bread is outstanding. Breakfast is served in the same room and it is a wonderful way to start the day.

The massage by Terry was so relaxing. Don't miss spending time in the relaxation room which is large, bright and airy. The magazine selection would rival any airport newsstand. The robes are sumptuous.

As much as I love the hotel which I do, I also really enjoy the guests. There is a certain type of person who appreciates and enjoys The Glenmere. Each time we have stayed at the property, we meet the nicest people. The people who stay at The Glenmere are just really interesting and well-traveled yet so unpretentious.

If I had one suggestion, it would be to have fresh fruit in the rooms or healthy snacks upstairs but that is truly a nitpick.

When we left, the bellman gave us two bottles of water with meringue cookies which was so thoughtful.

We look forward to out next visit. Thank you for a really wonderful stay. We really just had such a nice time.

“Superb” in every way is even an understatement in describing what awaits at Glenmere Mansion in New York’s Hudson Valley. Every detail is crafted reminiscent of the Le Crillon in Paris. The moldings on the walls are themselves works of art. The grounds make one think of the Villa San Michelle in Friesole. The food is prepared by a chef whose skill warrants Michelin recognition. The staff is highly professional. And, all this just one hour from NYC. I have long argued that America has so very many wonders. Now, I further assure the reader, the State of New York does too – and I would start with a wonderful trip to Glenmere Mansion in Chester New York.
