McKinley House Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 7 Clayton B&B and Inns
Reviewed 6 August 2014

The owners are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The place is über clean and comfortable. Just know rooms do not have TV and breakfast is adequate. Good location near river and restaurants. Clayton is turning around and a nice place to visit.

Having fled the depressing assemblage of buses, boats, trinket shops and mediocre lodging of Alexandria Bay, I have to say that I had no soaring expectations for Clayton when I rode into town. Much to my surprise, I discovered that Clayton is a nice little river town, with some interesting shops, arts and crafts, the really cool boat museum and restaurants serving edible food. And the McKinley House.

Steve is a very nice guy who showed me to my room at the back of the first floor that appeared to have been totally remodeled. The room was furnished appropriately but not elaborately and the bathroom had a new modular unit shower and nice vanity space. The bed was comfortable. The WiFi worked. The rest of the house is nicely furnished with fin de siècle pieces consistent with the late 19th century style. It is a comfortable place. I hit the road very early so missed the included breakfast.

I think the McKinley house is probably the best accommodation to be found in Clayton which, regrettably, is still scarred by several no-tell motels some of which are propitiously located close to the river. They are building a large resort-type facility at the edge of the downtown river area, but from external appearances, it looks to be yet another project that could have been something really special, but won't be. Clayton is worth a visit, though, and you should be sure to stay at the McKinley House. Happy Trails.

We spent last Sunday night at this very nice B&B in Clayton after attending a show at the opera house. We were both very pleased with the hospitality, clean room and great breakfast. Steve the owner was most hospitable and we will return.

We thoroughly enjoyed three nights at the McKinley House! Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The inn is perfectly located in walking distance to the riverfront and quaint town. The hosts Steve and Elyse could not have been more accommodating. Breakfasts were delicious and we enjoyed meeting the other guests.
We will be sure to stay here when we return.

Only one block from historic downtown Clayton and the blue waters of the St Lawrence River, one only needs to use a bit of imagination to go back in time and feel what residing in this quaint river town must have been like years ago. The house is everything the reviews said it was...lovely, welcoming, tasteful and spotless. We came in from the west and met our friends there from New England. It made for a perfect gathering place... the wrap-around large porch with comfy padded chairs two nights and then the parlor on the 3rd rainy evening. Another couple, not staying at the B&B, joined us and was made to feel welcome by our host Elise. This aspect made our trip to Clayton perfect. The full breakfasts were homecooked and accompanied by fresh fruit and yogurt each morning. This excellent location made it only steps away from the boat museum, shops, the lovely river pier and restaurants. We'd go back in a heartbeat!

My family gathered for my mother's 80th birthday and we stayed at the McKinley House. It was simply outstanding. Beautiful grounds and a stunning house. Extremely clean. Comfortable beds. Very quiet. The rooms had air conditioning, which was a godsend. The porch is perfect for sitting in the evening, and the living room area was a nice gathering space where we talked and drank wine. Breakfast each morning was great - and the conversation with proprietors (who wear many hats!) Steve and Alyse was always a delight.

It was also very nice to have several good restaurants just a short walk away - as well as activities (we went kayaking one evening). If you are having a family gathering (or just need a nice quiet place to lay your head for a night), I highly recommend McKinley House. I look forward to the opportunity to return.

I originally discovered this B&B here on TA when researching accommodations for our first ever trip to Clayton, NY for a family reunion over the long July 4th weekend in 2012. We so enjoyed our visit to McKinley House that we booked again for this year and it did NOT disappoint! Steve and Elise are great hosts and it's obvious from the spotless room and high quality breakfast foods that this B&B is definitely a labor of love for them both!

Book early, though, because this place is popular! Very convenient to everything you want to see in Clayton, Alex Bay and on Wellesley Island!

Room Tip: We booked the first floor room this year (The Murray) and liked it very much.
