Attraction details
Owner description: Tranquil and beautiful, our former watermill is a small, family run attraction with a little something for everyone. Sit by the river, meet the birds and animals, soak up some history, have a fabulous lunch, or unleash the kids in our woodland play area. Most visitors will allow a couple of hours for their visit, often staying for coffee and cake or lunch in our excellent cafe, while many people take their time and while away most of the day here, feeding the animals and soaking up the atmosphere. Lots of guests return more than once during their holiday, using the free annual pass that’s included with every admission. This is especially popular with people who live locally, and it’s always lovely to welcome our regular visitors who enjoy beautiful surroundings, gorgeous animals, great food, and a relaxing atmosphere. Our lovely cafe is open exclusively to ticketholders. Enjoy freshly made sandwiches, Lincolnshire platters, a classic ploughman’s lunch, homemade cakes, quiches, cream teas and specials. Don’t forget, you can return as often as you like with your annual pass, which is free with your first admission.

When we bought Claythorpe Watermill in July 2013, there was a lot to do and we knew that it would be impossible to please everyone straight away, but we've been overwhelmed by the support we've received from visitors – both old and new – who love Claythorpe for its tranquility, its history, the beautiful surroundings, the birds and animals and our lovely tea room. In particular, we've been encouraged by the huge number of people who come back for repeat visits using the free annual pass that comes with your admission – nearly a thousand return visitors in the first three months of 2014. Happily, many regular visitors tell us how much they're enjoying the results of all the hard work that we, and all our lovely staff, are putting in daily to make them welcome and to constantly improve our gorgeous attraction. New signage, new animals and several upgraded enclosures are all planned for the coming weeks.

Claythorpe Watermill is unusual in having a turbine, rather than a waterwheel (this was lost to a fire in the late 19th century). It's clearly signed before your enter, on all our leaflets and on our website, that we're not an operational mill, however the turbine and much of the mill workings are all here to see and we enjoy talking to visitors about the history of the mill.

We're sorry your didn't enjoy your visit and that you didn't feel that £4.90 for a whole year was good value – we very much encourage visitors to let us know in person if there's anything we can do to improve. We also hope you'll join the 1000 (and counting) Facebook friends at Facebook.com/ClaythorpeWatermill who have followed us in our first 10 months to keep in touch with the continual improvements here at Claythorpe.

We visited the mill today and were very disappointed. Considering £4.95 each for entry there was very little there to look at. Some of the cages were empty and the information on others was often broken or missing. The children's play area appeared grubby and in need of attention. A very sad looking attraction.

If you visited on 31 May, you may have seen one old enclosure which was in the process of being pulled down and one empty pheasant enclosure which was being prepared for the arrival of our gorgeous new pair of Himalayan Monals. None of our enclosures are empty, they're all freshly painted and we're in the process of renewing all the signage – one of a number of jobs we're working through since taking over as new owners last year.

As you know, your £4.90 admission allows you to come back as often as you like for a year – you don't appear to live far away so we hope you'll join the countless visitors who come back time and again. You can follow us at Facebook.com/ClaythorpeWatermill.

The 'Enchanted Wood' is looking a little tired and in need of some TLC - in particular, poor Snow White seems to have lost one of her dwarfs and of the 6 remaining, 5 are lying in the dirt all smashed. That said, we had a very pleasant hour walking round the gardens and looking at the animals.
