“Former Watermill in Beautiful settings.”

Attraction details
Owner description: Tranquil and beautiful, our former watermill is a small, family run attraction with a little something for everyone. Sit by the river, meet the birds and animals, soak up some history, have a fabulous lunch, or unleash the kids in our woodland play area. Most visitors will allow a couple of hours for their visit, often staying for coffee and cake or lunch in our excellent cafe, while many people take their time and while away most of the day here, feeding the animals and soaking up the atmosphere. Lots of guests return more than once during their holiday, using the free annual pass that’s included with every admission. This is especially popular with people who live locally, and it’s always lovely to welcome our regular visitors who enjoy beautiful surroundings, gorgeous animals, great food, and a relaxing atmosphere. Our lovely cafe is open exclusively to ticketholders. Enjoy freshly made sandwiches, Lincolnshire platters, a classic ploughman’s lunch, homemade cakes, quiches, cream teas and specials. Don’t forget, you can return as often as you like with your annual pass, which is free with your first admission.

We visited Claythorpe Watermill and Wildfowl Gardens yesterday, set in a wonderful tranquil location in east Lincolnshire .It was a couple of years ago when we first discovered the former mill and we really enjoyed ourselves on that occasion. This summer our Grandson is over from The Ukraine for the summer holidays and thought it would be a lovely place to take him, needless to say he had a fantastic time and again so did my wife and I. We had cream tea's in the tea room, the staff are very friendly and the cream teas didn't disappoint, our Grandson had the childrens lunchbox, everything was nice and fresh and the friendly chickens enjoyed any crumbs that fell their way.Prices are also very fair.
It's been a year since the new owners took over and they have made big improvements to the whole attraction and after having a chat to them yesterday they admit it's a work in progress,as I always say Rome wasn't built in a day. They are a lovely couple and I wish them well in their new venture.
Looking at some of the reviews on here,I can't understand their disappointment,If you are looking for kiddie rides, blaring music and slot machines then this isn't the place for you.As for the entrance fee,I can't believe anyone can say it is expensive as you can visit as many times as you like for a year.I paid £6 for 3 hours parking in York. I see someone mentioned watch where you put your feet, yes even chickens and ducks have to go, you have to watch where you put your feet on any street,I would expect there are inconsiderate dog owners in Cardiff aswell as most towns and villages. I would imagine most people before visiting an attraction would find some information of where they are visiting,if they do their homework first ,then surely they wouldn't be disappointed. On the Claythorpe Watermill website it clearly states this is a former Watermill and wildfowl gardens and not a fully working mill, brown roadside signs do not give full information.
Our Grandson enjoyed it so much he wants to go again asap. I fully recommend a visit .

Pleasant day out and the lovely surroundings with very friendly birds especially if you have bird food.
Cafe serving excellent food very tasty sandwiches and very good value.
It is not a large place but a great variety of water fowl and lovely small chipmunks too.
All the staff were very friendly and pleasant.
Lovely touch is the free entry for one year after the first visit

It's hard to be harsh but I expected a working water mill. Thats what the traffic Brown Signs intimate so I felt a little conned once I had paid. There really is nothing to see on the mill front. What there is, does not work and is behind some glass. Disappointing. Outside there are numerous types of wild birds and domesticated fowls.(Wasn't expecting a very small zoo) Watch where you put your feet. The location is nice with some rivers and streams but it really is in need of a refurb and clean-up. Sorry Claythorpe all of our party were of the same opinion. (One 100% harsher than what I have been) A plus? Pleasant young lady who served us tea.

Following brown signs can lead you to discover some great places - there's even a whole website dedicated to it.

Many people visit Claythorpe after seeing the brown signs or having noticed us on a road map and tell us what an unexpected delight it is. However, brown signs can only tell you the name and location of an attraction so turning up at places without doing any research can go the other way if the attraction isn't what you'd assumed it was (I'd steer clear of the Old Man of Hoy!) To help any passing visitors we do have leaflets at the gate so people can learn more about what's on offer before they decide whether or not they want to come in and pay admission - which gets you a pass allowing you to pay once and come back for a whole year. There's an information board at the front gate that tells visitors about Claythorpe's past and it's very clear that we're no longer a working mill - this is also on our website and leaflets so there's absolutely no attempt to mislead anyone. You were surprised to find animals here but presumably passed the gorgeous marmosets, the pheasant enclosures and numerous chickens on your way to the admission desk.

Having owned Claythorpe for a year (June 2013), there's a lot that we want to do, and we'd encourage anyone to join our 1000+ followers at Facebook.com/ClaythorpeWatermill to keep in touch with all our developments. It's always great to hear positive feedback about our staff and we'll make sure that's passed on.

Stumbled on this, while on holiday. This is not a large attraction, being in the grounds of a former watermill, but it is an idyllic setting and there are a selection of birds, otters? and the cages looked ok to me.There is a cafe, which we did not use,but appears to have a good selection of meals & sandwiches etc.Car parking opposite.

Thanks for taking the time to write a lovely review. Some of our happiest customers are those who've stumbled across us while out for a drive. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday and do make use of your free annual pass if you happen to make it back our way – we do a fantastic ploughman's! Hope to see you again.
