“Rustic and family vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2013

Covewood is not a place for people expecting a typical resort experience. So if you are looking for the Hilton, Club Med, or Sandels, you best not reserve time. However, if you are looking for a peaceful, rustic (they are called CABINS after all) family experience, where you don't have to blow dry your hair, put on your make up and all that then Covewood is the place for you. It is a place where people sit and chat or read books and talk to each other on any of the floating docks over looking Big Moose Lake, no caring if you are a manager at a fast food restaurant or the CEO of a furtune 500 company. Where the kids can spend time relaxing with you or away from you while taking part in one of the many activities offered in the childrens program. Where the people who are renting other cabins become your friends, that you look forward to seeing, your "summer family". Then Covewood is your place. I have seen some negative reviews, and some of those things may be true, but the charm of the place is the simple and rustic nature of it all. The owners have recent years have done much to update the property and amenities, without changing the charm that the place has held since it was built so many years ago. My family has been going to Covewood for the better part of the last 30 years, my children have forgone trips to Disney so that they could experience the simple beauty that is the ADK, and that is Covewood. It is NOT for everyone, granted, but if you are looking for a little rustic simplicity, and beautiful NATURAL surrondings, the staff will open up the place to you as if you are a guest in their home.....and actually, that is what you are. If you want to be treated like a customer, at a big swanky hotel, this is not the place for you, but if you want to walk around bare foot, eat Ben and Jerry;s straight from the pint or just enjoy great company, beautiful surroundings, and slow down, reconnect with your family and recharge your 'batteries' then this is the place.

I made the HUGE mistake of assuming that the pictures on the beautiful Covewood website were giving me the general idea of what all the cottages looked like. NOPE! Not even close! I have to wonder if those pictures were taken there at all. I had just worked all day and then drove for 5 hours and was in desperate need of a hot shower and a comfortable bed in what I hoped was a clean and cozy cottage. My jaw hit the floor when I saw the shack they wanted over a $100 a night for. I'm pretty sure the Mary Alden cottage used to be the outhouse. At least, that's what it smelled like. The bed was an old, ratty fold out couch. The ceiling was so low my boyfriend couldn't stand up straight. The bathroom door didn't even have a door knob. And the doorway looked like it was cut with a sawzall. I hit my head on the bathroom doorway twice and I'm only 5'4". My 6'3" boyfriend had to fold himself in half to get in there. In a nutshell, the place was old, dirty and smelly. I wouldn't stay there again if I were homeless. This place was an insult to the beautiful scenery that surrounded it. The people who have given this place a good rating must be the owners.

This client had been advised before making the reservation that the cottage was meant for "2 very friendly people", that it was small and was directed to the pictures on the website. These folks stayed for 3 days, refused all trash pick-up, never lodged a complaint and walked out without paying or saying word. Had they come to us there were other cottages open and we would have gladly moved them. We can't fix it if we don't know about it. Also, when checking the cottage after they left we found a dog's dish. We clearly state that we do not accept pets.

Our family has enjoyed its vacation at Covewood for 23 straight years. The natural beauty of Big Moose Lake combined with the rustic setting of the Earl Covey Lodge makes a perfect seting for truely relaxing vacation. It is said that the water is magical!

We will return to Covewood this summer for our 2nd season. We discovered this treasure last year when we looked for a rental that could accomodate a group of 10--three generations. Covewood provided the absolute perfect solution....4 hours of day camp each day, Big Moose Lake at our doorstep,.boating, sandy beach, hiking, evening campfire activities and rustic lodge and cabins. Staff were very friendly and always available...even make homemade donuts on order!! Owners Di and Major treat you like family. The perfect Adirondack Mountain Family Vacation.

Room Tip: All cabins have easy access to lake..reserve early.

It's a trip back in time; when you had nothing to worry about but which bathing suit was dry. We stayed in the main lodge as we booked late and all cabins were sold out. Being we could only stay for two nights, it was the best location for us anyway. Our group consisted of 4 women ages 40-60, no kids (on the trip with us). We read our books in comfy lounge chairs along the waters edge, and watched the children learn how to water-ski. The next day we rented a pontoon boat for the afternoon and drove all around the lake taking in the gorgeous scenery, and beautiful homes and boathouses. As we came into dock that evening, we stopped and watched a pair of loons, and then listened to them all night from our rooms.
We had brought minimal food as we drove in from Chicago, so had little space in our car. There were restaurants available, in the little town nearby (Can't recall the name..) but Covewood is missing some opportunity in selling easy, snack items. Once a week (Tues, maybe?) they cook homemade doughnuts, which were absolutely divine.
I would highly recommend for families and extended families. Every child there was on cloud nine, activities galore. And it was fun to simply watch them create and play in the field.
A place like no other. Leave your cell phone, laptop, and PSP at home, and rekindle your love for the outdoors.

Covewood Lodge is a beautiful rustic, but still comfy, Adirondack lodge right on Big Moose Lake, with so many classy traditions. You can stay in the lodge or rent an apartment (bring you own sheets and towels.) All guests have full access to the children''s beach, large series of docks, boat, canoe, kayak, sailboat rental, waterskiing lessons, tennis courts, and hiking trails. If parents need a break, there is a children's program with fun activities planned each morning and afternoon. There is no cell phone service at Covewood; a really great feature for the family who wants to tune out and be together. We have gone to Covewood for the past 42 years; my kids love it as much as I have over the years.

My son and I visited Covewood Lodge for 3 days staying in their smallest one room cabin which was clean and ready for us when we arrived. The owners Major and Di went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of even though the resort did not open for a week we had the run of the place. The weather did not coorperate and it was cold in the high 30's and 40's Major came in and made sure we knew how to run the heater and had plently of wood for the fire place. We hiked, watched a bear for about an hour a deer followed us home one afternoon and the loons sang us to sleep each night. It was a great relaxing Holiday I can not wait to go back in August!
