Fabulous location on the Pennine Way walking and cycling routes and very friendly people that we met in the village. Don't leave without walking to Ashgill Force waterfalls! There was plenty of space for an extended family of 8 (aged 7 to 77) for a short stay. Its an old house with some interesting history and the layout is gloriously quirky. The area has no phone signal and although there is wifi at the house it was a bit intermittent / slow. No real problem with that but as others have said it is worth knowing in advance. Also worth being prepared for some quirks in the plumbing (eg noisy shower pump and downstairs toilet is a bit Spartan). Overall I'd recommend this property, it is great value for money for a house full of character.
Garrigill is a lovely, quiet, peaceful, friendly, North Pennine village. Whichever way you travel you will find wonderful scenery. The Lake District is also accessible (though if you wanted to be visiting The Lakes everyday you may want somewhere closer).
Despite the village's size there is a swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi that can be hired very reasonably within a minutes walk from the house ( the kids loved it). There is also a local friendly bar and a small children's play area.
The village also has a little Post Office that carries most essentials. The village of Alston about 3.5 miles away has more shops. We found Penrith to be the nearest town for shopping.
It is so peaceful, well away from the hustle and bustle, a fantastic place to relax.
The Old Smithy is a lovely old house, clean, tidy, quirky and a great place for a large family group. There's plenty of space, room to spread out and it is well equipped. It is very reasonably priced.
Every contact with the owners was helpful and pleasant.
We would all recommended staying at The Old Smithy, Garrigill.
Nine of us booked the cottage for the weekend. It is an ideal getaway if its peace and quiet you're after. The cottage itself is clean, spacious and ideally located on its own piece of land in the centre of the village. There is a small, friendly bar in St. John's Spa located about 100 yards from the cottage, where you can get a pint of reasonably priced real ale and a bite to eat. There are several walks you can take, from the short and gentle to a 4 mile walk through the valley down to Alston, where several pubs are located selling fine ales and superb food. Loved the whole experience and have already booked again for later in the year. Highly recommended.
We have had a fantastic stay at this wonderful cottage. We are 1 of two families that stayed with plenty of space and bedrooms. Clean, tidy and left with simple instructions on what was nessacary to do. No signal but that is a bonus when you run your own business! Definitely recommend the 4.5 mile walk to the waterfall which we found a leaflet in the top drawer on the ground floor. Even a baby in a carrier and 2 x 3 year olds did this it was fantastic to see and do. Will definitely come again thanks Paul!
Lovely cottage right in the centre of the village. Sleeps 9 on three floors, bed linen and towels provided. Great location for walking as it is on both the Pennine Way and C2C routes, views aruond the village are outstanding.

The old smithy is a lovely cottage. We stayed in August 2016. 9 of us of ages from 1 year to 55years. Plus 2 small dogs. Ample room for us all, never felt like we were on top of each other. Rooms and decor clean and tidy.
We were surprised at the amount of kitchen utensils (pots, pans, dishes etc) as we brought a lot of our own to cook with and didn't have too.
We visited the local pub across the road, had a meal there which was lovely. There's no phone signal in the village which suited us, locals were friendly and came to chat too us.
Throughly enjoyed our stay at the old smithy and would recommend. Tempted to book up again for next year!
