“A Magical Memory”
Reviewed 15 November 2005

My husband and I were married during our stay at the J Harper Poor Cottage in East Hampton. It may sound silly, but we felt like we were in Alice in Wonderland's Secret Garden as we discovered the magical floweres, aromas, and details scattered throughout the property - both inside and out. We stayed in the Huntting Room which was well appointed with lovely antiques, a crackling wood fireplace, an old rocker from long ago, and first class antique linens. The charm cannot be simply put into words! We awoke to the smell of blueberry pancakes, sausage and gourmet coffees. We meandered the inn, only to find wallpaper by William Morris, photographs from centuries ago, and overstuffed antique furniture. It was so comfy that we wished we had time to relax and read a few books from cover to cover. Every surface of the inn was hand crafted, and architecturally marvelous! In the late afternoon, chefs were in the kitchen preparing beautiful snacks. The spa in the basement was a tempting treat - if only we had time. We lingered too long at breakfast, and slept in too late to really enjoy all that the inn had to offer. We were married the next day, and never felt more refreshed and comfortable lounging in public...it was an intimate and warm setting, unlike any other. The next day we took a stroll to the beach, and walked the streets of East Hampton where shoppes and restaurants were in close proximity...and the lane where we had to say goodbye to our guests could not have been more picture perfect.

My husband and I just stayed at this B&B and I feel the need to tell everyone about this gem on eastern Long Island. Our room, which was immaculate, was beautifully decorated and had a view of the gardens. The staff was so accomodating and the breakfast was suberb. We can't wait to go back when the wisteria tree is in full bloom!

We were referrred to the Poor Cottage by a friend, so we assumed it it would be a great place. Unfortunately, once we arrived we realized the place had been sold and that they were letting things go. The rooms were a little dusty and the place just didn't seem very clean overall. They did refer us to a great restaurant that is down the road-The 1770 House. When we went there for dinner we realized that they had a beautiful inn. After a brief tour of their rooms we decided that the next time we visit east hampton we will be staying there.

This is probably the best spot in East Hampton for people who don't want the "full hotel" treatment...it's really kind of a cross between a B&B and a hotel. Comfortable but posh common areas, big homey rooms (and only a handful of them) and a spectacular backyard garden. It's kind of like staying at a beautiful country manor in the Cotswolds (or what I imagine that would be like!). Again, if you expect to be waited on hand and foot, go to a hotel, but otherwise...this is the place!
