“College visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2013

My daughter and I stayed here on our visit to Elmira College. Very easy to get to and also very convenient to the Elmira campus. We were very pleased. Clean, bright, welcoming lobby. Friendly and attentive staff. The room was clean and came equipped with a refrigerator and microwave in addition to the coffee maker. The beds were comfortable and there was little to no noise (outside or in the hallway). We decided on room service for breakfast as we had to be up early. It arrived piping hot and on time. Delicious!

We stayed a couple of days at this hotel. It is clear that management and staff want to do a good job, which already puts this hotel well above all others. However, a few minor changes would really enhance the experience. Most of these have to do with coffee!

First, don't put powered creamer (basically a form of fat) in the rooms when it is now possible to put real milk in small containers (that do not require refrigeration). Powdered creamer is foul stuff.

Second, in the restaurant, don't put liquified powdered creamer on the table. Provide milk. This was done when we requested it (thanks!) but why not just put it there to begin with. Liquified powdered fat is foul.

It is nice that you have a coffee maker in the room. Please clean it between guests. Ours still had residue / drippings in the coffee pot from the last person who stayed in the room.

The room is musty. It fortunately has a large window. However, there are no screens so leaving it open its problematic. Think about adding screens.

The AC/heat unit cycles on and off every 5 minutes or so and then runs for only a few minutes before shutting off. The cycle then repeats in 5 mintes. The fan is quite loud and disturbs sleep when it comes on. It would be nice if the unit had a "continuous fan" button so it would just stay running, or better yet, a less touchy thermostat so it wouldn't have to cycle so frequently for such short periods.

A ventilation fan in the bathroom would be helpful. The bath gets incredibly humid and musty. The four us us (staying in adjoining rooms) all complained of allergies. I worry about mold.

On the good side: the pool is nice, the staff are trying hard, and the location is convenient if one is traveling by car.

Holiday Inn, Elmira, N.Y. is a great place to stay. Dog friendly, with room out back for dogs to run. Right next to shallow river, if your dog likes to swim. Indoor pool and weight room. Nice bar and restaurant. Went to the Hilltop Inn, with a great view of the city and surrounding hills, and to Libs, for good Italian food. (Service at Libs a little slow, so be prepared to take your time).

Stayed here recently for a half marathon I was running in Watkins Glen during the weekend. Wasn't too pricy considering we spent 2 nights there. The hotel staff were very nice as well. Overall, it was a pretty good stay.

Location - our family of 3 were there for 3 nights and it was a good starting point to visit the Corning Museum of Glass, Watkins Glen State Park, Ithaca (for Cornell University, Robert Treman Park, Buttermilk Falls) which were within a 45 min drive. However, there's not much in the immediate area in terms of restaurants or sights. A 10 min drive to Horseheads for Target, Walmart, Arnot Mall, and some chain restaurants.
Room - 2 double beds, small fridge, microwave and coffeemaker. The Holiday Inns carry Bath & Body Works toiletries which i like. Room was clean. Make sure you put out your 'Do not Disturb' sign the night before as the cleaning staff may come knocking soon after 8 am the following morning.
Amenities - we used the decent-sized indoor pool and there was a lifeguard on duty. The pool water was a good temperature but water could have been clearer. No jacuzzi though.
Staff - all right but the evening front desk guy could use a refresher in hospitality 101 (try smiling).
Extras - liked the water jug filled with ice, lemon and lime slices in the foyer but it wasn't always available. Seemed adhoc.
Value - good. I find the Finger Lakes area can be quite expensive in terms of accommodations. Bid for this on Priceline and got about 20% off the regular rate (although, was expecting better).

I grew up in Elmira and when I would return I'd stay at the Holiday Inn. This hotel used to be a disaster. Torn and smelly carpets and rooms that matched. On our stay this past weekend, the rooms were very typical of a Holiday Inn, not fancy but clean and fresh. As a warning, don't park your car under any of the trees lining the parking lot or you will need to wash your car in the morning (I forgot this). The good and bad news is that there is no mini-bar in the room but you do get a nice size refrigerator. The staff was nice and helpful after check-in, though the check-in process was very slow with people trying to figure out what their deal is. I'd recommend this hotel as a comfortable place to stay that is conveniently located just off of route 17.

Room Tip: Stay on the second floor, that way nobody is over your head. If you have a lot of stuff, stay on th...

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2013

Stayed here on business for 3 nights in June 2013. Get yourself a Holiday Inn Priority Rewards membership online (it's their frequent traveler club) for free before you check in. They will give you a ten dollar off breakfast voucher for the restaurant. The restaurant onsite is operated independently so otherwise you'd need to pay. But for just giving them my priority #, I was able to get free breakfast. The ten dollar certificate more than paid for a full cooked to order breakfast. The food was acceptable, the service was questionable. There were 2 waitresses who appeared to take turns being host and server and the service was ever so slow. Like unacceptable slow.

I wouldn't say the hotel is in a good neighborhood, but its not terrible either. The rooms were clean. The parking was free and ample, which is always a plus in my book. Small fitness center with a TV which I used one evening. There was an indoor pool with a very bored looking lifeguard. Seemed a little odd to have a full time lifeguard when there were 3 people in the pool all day! It made it difficult to relax when you felt like there was someone watching you. I can't imagine that a lifeguard in a pool like this is really necessary. There was also an outdoor pool on all the directional signs inside the hotel, but the outside pool is closed. It's summertime so I gather that this pool is just out of service. Again, seems odd to me that they haven't just filled it in or something. Doesn't paint a nice picture when the pool is all covered up and closed.

The refrigerator and microwave in the room were a plus for sure! Wireless interenet signal in the room was good as well. Overall, this is an ok property. I wouldn't be spending a vacation there or anything, but for a few nights for business, it was ample.
