“I'll Return To Stay Again”
Reviewed 1 June 2011

Plane was late arriving and reservation was ready when I arrived. No problem to upgrade to a suite. Room was large with 2 comfortable beds and a large seating area. A fridge was also available. Room was clean and cleaned promptly on second day.
Breakfast at Limestone grill was good (way too much food) as was service. Price was great with 20% off coupon provided by front desk!
Best part was I left a jacket in my room at check out. Called 2 days later when I realized it was missing and they shipped it to me. Thanks!!
No Problems! Great Stay!

We arrived around 4:30 in the afternoon. We were told our room was not ready. Check-in time is 3:00! The attitude of the reception desk was terrible, not very accommodating at all. After a long trip on the road, we couldn't even check in to our room 1 1/2 hours after check-in. It only got worse from there. Our room stank. After a few hours we figured out why. There were ants everywhere! the smell was some kind of ant killing poison we think. We talked to the manager about getting a discount rate for the room not being ready and were basically told "tough luck." Our room was big, but there were stains in the carpet and we didn't feel to cozy in the bed (seeing ants makes one think of bed bugs).

On a brighter note, the restaurant was very good for both service, food, and atmosphere. I recommend the restaurant, but not the hotel.

Our family of 4 stayed at the Craftsman Inn for a long weekend while doing college visits. We have family in the area, as well. We checked in late and were not impressed by the welcome we received at the front desk. The only person on duty in the entire hotel was at the front desk and he was very unfriendly. When we arrived in our room, we were tired and opened the sleeper sofa to set it up for our son. We were shocked to find it was unmade and the mattress had a huge dark stain in the center. It looked like a crime scene! We immediately called the front desk and we were offered another room - no apology. The sole employee at the front desk left his post and escorted us to another room which we inspected and determined was better than the first. We moved our luggage and were given the key to the new room which was absent of a "crime scene" mattress although it wasn't much cleaner .
We've stayed at the Craftsman Inn several times over the years - it's been some time since our last visit and we were surprised at how the place has been neglected. Housekeeping and Service has really hit bottom and I hope they clean up their act because it's a beautiful Inn and we've enjoyed our stays there in the past. We ate at the restaurant one night using the vouchers we received at check-in and we had a pleasant meal. I'll need some assurances that the Craftsman Inn has cleaned up their act before we stay there again.
During one night of our stay, there was a loud group congregating around cars in the parking lot outside our room. They were carrying on for about an hour @2am which kept our family awake. This should not have been allowed and hotel management (or the one employee on duty) should have put a stop to it.

I have stayed at The Craftsman Inn in Fayetteville a couple times now. The staff is very attentive and the rooms are well maintained. The price/value ratio is very good. The restaurant, Limestone Grille, is very, very good. The food portions for breakfast are best described as 'huge' and always very fresh. I greatly enjoyed speaking to some of the locals at the bar while waiting for my party to arrive for dinner. There are not many great places in Syracuse to stay, The Craftsman Inn has proven to a consistent, well priced choice.

We have used trip advisor for years in planning out trips. Then first time we don’t check out a place (Craftsman Inn) on trip advisor before booking and we paid the price. Never again..

In the past have visited the Craftsman Inn several times for lunch and nice drinks at the bar when out shopping. There has always been a nice group of business people at the bar and nice well dressed couples about to chat with From the bar and restaurant area clearly a great a place for a nice romantic evening..

Going to the Craftsman web site. First class.. Great pictures of the place, lots of information on special over night packages.. Will give you a secure feeling that a you and your spouse will have a great experience.

With our 24th wedding anniversary just around the corner, Why not do an over night… A call to the front desk the night before was well received.. Easy going informative individual, took our call and book us a nice suit with a whirlpool tub, a sitting area . With the extra effort taken on our part, and that it was after the holidays so things would be calm, no big parties or groups booked, we was sure we would end up with one of the better rooms they would have available..

Well it turned out to be anything but…

Checking in.. There was complete confusion of the room we had just booked directly with the front desk the night before.. Not a big thing, given that the place was absolutely empty, It would have been a big issue if the place was busy. The confusion was cleared up quickly, but only because we knew what we had booked, who we had spoken with the night before and did have our confirmation number with us. So be warned. Take notes when booking hotels.

So we headed to our Ok. Walked in, nice sized room, nice sitting area. Nice bedding on king sized bed. That was the nice first impression of the room.

Now, walking into the bathroom, nice sized.. But dirty !! We are not a couple who gets upset with finding a strand of hair or two.. But BALLS of different colored hair in the corners… Dust and dirt everywhere ?? Ceiling tiles popped out of their aluminum framing all but falling to the floor. A shower who’s corners were black with mold? And the whirlpool that look like it had never been properly cleaned in years ?? There was no way we were going to go in that thing.. There is no amount of antibiotics that could clear up the issues we are going to have the next day. Then we realized our shoes were sticking to the rug… nasty…

The air handling system noisy, with a strong smell of mold emanating from the luke warm air. Now this hotel is located in upstate New York, in January, you need a good heating system. Should have taken a picture of the dirt, hair incrusted air filter.. I think if I had shown my lovely wife the filter she would have gotten sick.

Did I mention we did get sick ?? O yes. We were the only ones at breakfast the net day and we know why. Being nice we will say the service and food with more than acceptable. It just would have been nice if we BOTH could have kept it with us more than about 15 minutes.. We can at least assure you that the toilets do work. Because, after breakfast at the Craftsman, we utilized it considerably for the next 2 hours.

Did we have a great time.. Yes.. Could we have complained and possibly moved to a more acceptable room.. Chances are yes… But we have learned to make lemonade from lemons, and anytime we can spend time together away from the chatter of everyday life is perfect.. Can I say we have seen worse.. Most defiantly… Are we, and should you book a room at the Craftsman?? Not a chance until management wakes up and takes corrective action… The best part is we are off to the number one rated resort in Belize very soon. Something tell us our experience and review of the Phoenix will be considerable better than the Craftsman’s Inn.. Best to all in your future travels.. Alan & Karen

OK....So we wanted to like this hotel since if was the only convenient option for us in Fayetteville. We had booked several rooms here, all of which were filthy. Where to begin. Clearly, housekeeping does not believe in cleaning or dusting. There was inch thick dust and cob webs all over the place. The bed sheets were stained and/or ripped. Our white socks turned black from walking on the carpets. The bathrooms were small and very dirty as well. This hotel is in dire need of updating. We would definitely categorize this hotel as a "dump". Only stay here as a last resort if there is no other convenient option!!

My husband and I recently stayed at the Craftsman Inn. Although our stay wasn't a bad experience, it wasn't a stay that we could really rave about. The room was very, very small, and the floors creaked, even though they were carpeted. The bathrooms are very old in style and need a full makeover. The shower pressure was non existent, yet the water was plenty hot. The only redeemable feature about the hotel room was the very comfortable bed and lovely linens. The Limestone Grill that is adjacent to the hotel had a beautiful bar and good cuisine. The staff at the Grill were most accomodating.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The American Arts and Crafts Movement blossomed at the turn of the 20th century on the tree lined streets of peaceful villages in upstate New York. The movement was a personal and architectural revolt against the ornateness of the Victorian style. This Movement sparked a period of design characterized by simplicity, honestly and integrity. Here in Fayetteville, Leopold and John George Stickley created Arts and Crafts furniture using innovative construction techniques which have endured as hallmarks of the Movement. The Craftsman Inn is dedicated to these Craftsman ideals. Look around, the designs that inspire the building, the chairs and tables, the lighting and pictures, all evoke that ideal. Our Limestone Grille was launched in 2008 as the heir to our more stately Craftsman House. The Limestone reflects the 21st century evolution of these concepts as once again a desire for a simpler, truer, more authentic approach becomes prevalent. Our dining room and lounge reflect clean, Mission style design but with warm colors, classic furnishings, and contemporary appointments. Our service staff and bartenders provide friendly yet attentive service, knowledgeable without being presumptuous, helping to create the sense of relaxed comfort we all seem to miss so much of the time. That end result is what inspires us to do the best we can. ... more   less
