At 3.30pm we arrived for our booking on Mother's Day, only to discover my wife's absent-minded hubby had made the booking at a different Axe and Compasses, 20 miles away!
Despite this, and the fact that the last servings had been an hour and a half earlier, the owner could not have been more accommodating and the staff more willing to please. A table was made available and a very grateful family was served excellent food.
No room for any criticism.

Combine a first class restaurant with Greek/Cypriot owners and you have an amazing menu of traditional British cusine with traditional Greek dishes. Place this in a beautiful village pub, add an interesting selection of well kept cask conditioned ales, a large open fire in the winter and you may start to understand why I drive from Norwich (about an hour) to enjoy their superb hospitality.
You'll need to book !

If ever I've got friends and family visiting from Norway, I take them here. It's a beautiful thatched rural pub, set in a beautiful village. The menu is varied, and we've never had a bad meal here. In the Summer, you can sit outside and be served promptly and never have to wait long for a refill. Inside, I would say it's a little quirky, but it really has character. Think the complete opposite of an All Bar One, and you'll be about right. It beats the overrated and overpriced "Jamie Olivers' parents place" in Clavering, hands down.

This has been our local pub for almost twelve years - we eat here two or three times a month and have yet to have a bad meal-while the menu is traditional pub food it is always made with top quality ingredients, always hot and always served promptly. We have tried all the restaurants in the area but this remains our favourite because of it's consistently good standard.
