Chateau St Cloud
Ranked #5 of 7 Hotels in La Digue Island
Reviewed 27 September 2009

We stayed here on our honeymoon, after having been pampered by the pool and beach for three days at the Hilton in Mahe, we came to La Digue to see the island, its beaches, the people and stretch our legs.

The Hotel is brilliantly situated to explore the island. If it is luxury you are after, then look elsewhere, but if you go with a realistic idea of what is offered, this place is great. The food was very good and we could easily have eaten the octopus curry every night. The chap singing reggae in vibrato was great!

The rooms are basic. But our opinion is that all we wanted was a comfortable bed and a good shower. Outside of this we were all across the island, so to arrive back to a dip in the pool, drink on the balcony and sundown as the Bats came out was great.

The french owner is a hoot, very helpful and eager you enjoy the stay too. Our friendly lizards and Geckos were a constant source of evening entertainment too.

It may not be in the realms of some of the other hotels, but for a cheaper stay on a truly beautiful island you could do far worse. We didnt get bikes, we walked everywhere and saw the entire island at a beatiful pace and were lucky enough to see a Veuve too. in our opinion you shouldnt be heading to LaDigue to sit by a swanky pool, it would be a wasted trip not to have seen the beaches and island.

We went there for the second leg of our honeymoon. After getting married at Lemuria on Praslin we were expecting a big culture shock knowing that La Digue was a back to basic type island without any luxury hotels. What we got was a relief as we actually prefered it as it was much more chilled out somehow. We got picked up in an ox cart from the port and 15minutes later arrived very relaxed at the hotel. We picked la digue as we love the wildlife and I found that this was one of the best 'affordable' islands to see things.
The hotel wasn't amazing by any means, but the room was extremely clean, up a lot of stairs with a covered veranda - chalet style. Although the room was small it was adequate - we managed to fit our cases in the wardrobe out the way, as this was the only drawback - lack of space around the bed. The shower was fine and there was a fridge in the room. The location was great - at the hotel itself we saw a giant millipede, giant land snails, loads of geckos - 2 types (especially when we left the light on to go down to dinner - we came back and there were 11 green geckos around the lights on our veranda! We had prime viewing from our room to watch the enormous fruit bats flying over and which landed in the surrounding trees. (If you go and try and get photos of them, best place is to wander left out the hotel for 5 minutes and before you even get to la reserve you can actually clearly see them in the trees). We also saw loads of massive palm spiders and my favourite a tiny tree frog.
We hired bikes from the hotel (5 Euros a day). They were pretty poor, but got you around. Being a nervous cyclists I was a bit apprehensive but its completely fine out there - the roads are wide and there are just a handful of transit type trucks that are on the island used by the builders. You can pull over and stop and wait for them to pass as they go slowly and the roads are mostly open enough to see them coming. The most disappointing bit for us was the snorkeling - we hardly saw a thing!
The food at the hotel was ok - the breakfast completely rubbish - and the waiting staff were pretty begrudging of you asking them for anything. The dinners were fine though - the alternated between a buffet and then a set 3 course dinner the next night. We had 4 nights there and this was perfect for us - (alternatively 3 would have been good as well as we did just flop around the last day). Any longer and I think it would have been a waste what with so many other islands to explore.
We had a great time - (we also visited Denis island for 4 days which was fab!)

i want to point out that what i will be writing is regarding our room" l'esperance", because i want to think that all other standard rooms are in better conditions.
If your budget permit it go straight to de luxe or superior rooms and you will have a wonderful stay.
Unfortunatelly my family ( 2 adults and 2 childreen) was staying in standard room "l'esperance". It is a terrible room, we were 4 in a room that maximum can accomodate 2 people, the conditions of room are horrible, mildewed and flaking walls,
humidity everywhere, no furnitures in the bathrooms (not even the space for toothbrush) , the sink was inside the shower!!!!!
the wardrobe could contain clothes for maximum 2 persons, we had 4 beds but only one beside table.
I really suggest to property to refurbish or to close this room, because they will be loosing clients.
We had booked 5 nights but we spent there only 2 nights( and we have been charged for 3 ), by the way at time of booking we agreed that in the price was included pick up and drop off by taxi from jetty, but once a called them one week before to confirm time of boat arrival, they replied me that i had to think about ( and pay ) the taxi.
It is a pity, because location is very nice, the restaurant is o.k., the swimming pool is only for childreen.
Reception close at 6.00 p.m. !?!?!

I Carl Mills being the General Manager of Chateau St Cloud do not deny that a certain block of the hotel was not up to standard . However i am now pleased to advise that The block in Question has been completely renovated and will be opening in March 2011 . We have also completed total refurbishment of the Restaurant and Swimming Pool . Six totally new Chalets have also been completed . We feel that the Chateau St Cloud will meet most expectations in 2011 .

If you decide to spend a few days in La Digue, try to stay clear of Chateau St. Cloud. We booked a "superior room" and we were given a shabby bungalow in the middle of the jungle 100 steps from the main buildings, the bed could not possibly sleep two people, the bathroom had plastic appliances (wc, sink, etc.), the room was probably 15 sqm in total and everything had a very cheap feeling. At a rate of EUR 250+ per night it was a joke. Because we were only staying a couple of nights, we decided to upgrade to "deluxe rooms" which are actually the only ones you might want to take, if you don't mind the EUR 100 extra of course. Those rooms (4 in total) are set in the former main house of the estate and are really nice, although pricey. You can tell that they were already there when current owners bought the estate and decided to build the other 100 ugly rooms, the style is clearly different...

The hotel has a cheap and shabby feeling troughout, from the unfriendly manager to the unfriendly waiters; food is average at best and is thrown to your table without even telling you what it is. We spoke with a few guys and several guests had many insects visiting the room overnight, clearly the rooms are not properly sealed. One couple got up every morning with bites on their legs, they sprayed repellent on the matress and from the matress tens of red ants flew in despair, and they even had a problem in getting their room changed!

So in summary, the island abunds of cheaper accomodations that I am sure offer at least the same standards of this hotel, and probably give you a more welcoming feeling, or if you are ready to pay EUR 350 for a room, I am sure other accomodations beat this one!

The hotel is set on a beautiful road about 10mins cycle ride from the jetty. Initially we were pleasnatly suprised by the hotel. It looks great, the grounds are beautiful, our room was large and reasonably comfortable. we quickly decided that it's not worth the inflated price charged. Whilst the rooms look good, it's actually quite basic. Breakfast was ok but supper was awful - again really poor value and we felt that we were not seen as guests by the owner but money machines. Found the owner rather daunting and perfunctory, but she has very friendly staff. We now know there are nicer places to stay on La Digue, which represent much better value for money. A fabulous island, really worth a second visit.

Tips - food not really great anywhere so self catering a better option. Take cycle lights with you and if you do stay at Chateay St C - don't hire their bikes. You'll have a choice of newer, safer bikes which suit your size but cheaper elsewere.

We stayed here for 5 nights in an enormous Superior room with huge bathroom and separate dressing room, plenty of space for parents and a teenager sharing one room. The décor and cleanliness were Ok but very average. On the plus side were plenty of towels, including pool towels, somewhere to hang wet stuff right outside, a huge shady terrace area, an icy cold shower right outside (brilliant for cooling off after walking back from the beach), plentiful hot water for showers, beautiful gardens with wonderful wildlife all around, good and plentiful food, very friendly and kind staff and a kettle. On the negative side there were a couple of cockroaches in the bathroom and the décor of the room and bathroom were very basic. The air conditioning was switched off when we arrived and we would have appreciated a cool room in which to unpack after travelling from the UK and unused to the heat and humidity on first arriving. It took several hours for the A/C to kick in as it was only just adequate for the size of the room.

In future we would always book a hotel on the coast when staying in a tropical climate, in order to have cooling sea breezes. The intense heat here was sometimes too much. However, that was our choice and the surroundings of the hotel were beautiful. A walk to the beach was maybe 30 minutes, quicker and cooler to cycle. Everything, including a supermarket, is within walking distance.

La Digue is a lovely , living, working island although there is currently a lot of building work taking place.

We stayed two nights in superior rooms that were clean and spacious, but plain and without any charm. We did not like the hotel at all. The water of the swimming pool was milky and we did not dare to get into it, besides there was no shade so you couldn't relax outside the pool either. Food was very average. Location is neither romantic nor pretty. Far away from any beach or nice view. We were very glad to leave and would not recommend it to others, especially because it isn't very cheap either.
