“Expected better for the price...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2013

We stayed here earlier this month for a wedding we attended in the area and we were quite disappointed. I know that because of the location all hotels/B&B's/etc are all very pricey but I have stayed in hotels for less than $100/night that were better than this place at over 3x that price. The included continental breakfast was as expected and the location was great but our room left us disappointed. At first look it looked nice, but our room was missing a phone meaning when we had questions we had to call the front desk from our cell phones, a few light bulbs were out in the room and we woke up to ants all over our desk and a few beetles crawling on the floor. We left a comment card with our information and thought we would get a follow-up since we were so disappointed but never got a call either. Needless to say for the price we paid we were quite disappointed and will stay somewhere else if we're back in the area in the future.

Dear SpartyOn,

We are shocked to read this review and want you to know that two resident managers live only a few steps from the room in which you stayed. We also want to remind you that the front office is located a one-minute walk from your room and is open 365 days a year from 7am to 11pm. Additionally, a night manager is on call from 11pm to 7am for emergencies and we can assure you that we would treat the matter you are describing as an emergency. Our procedure is to deploy housekeeping to your room immediately for additional cleaning and also to remove the remnants of food or sugary drinks that may have spilled on your desk. And if you needed this attention several times a day, we would certainly provide it upon request.

We, as resident employees would not accept the condition in which you say you spent your entire weekend and are confused as to why you never came to the front desk, told a housekeeper, told the groundskeeper, told the breakfast attendant, told a manager or submitted the repair/and-or emergency card which you could drop off at any time without having to speak with any of us. We do not consider a complaint of this nature as a trivial matter to report via phone call or on a comment card upon departure.

For you this may be just your first time review on TripAdvisor to complain after the fact. However, for us, this is the reputation of our business and the foundation of the livelihoods of our employees and their families -- any of whom would have resolved this issue for you while you were on the premises. We run our business with a focus on cleanliness and customer service and this is the reason why our rooms are booked a year in advance and why we have so many return guests for over a decade.

As the title of your review is a complaint of the price, we feel this is the real complaint and want to address it. We understand your were spending money to attend a wedding and see that you were visiting from the great state of Virginia. Many of us at The Greenporter are from other parts of the country and understand that visitors from other areas might not be familiar with the price structure in Eastern Long Island. Unfortunately, prices in this area will be higher than in other parts of the country where property values and corresponding taxes are much lower. But for Eastern Long Island, we offer the best value for the level of accommodations.

We fondly remember your gracious hosts who were a lovely wedding couple. We all know what great length they went through to find a hotel for their guests centrally located in the Village of Greenport with a wonderful pool, jacuzzi, and restaurant and we are certain that if there were a property offering a better value, they would have chosen it.

We regret you did not communicate with use during your stay and wish you the best for your future travels.

My husband and I spent a weeknight at the hotel in early August, peak of tourist season. We chose it because it offered parking and allowed us to easily walk to the center of town without having to rely on the car. It wasn't inexpensive, but considering the time of year we thought the price was reasonable. $10 discount for booking online. All the rooms overlook the pool in the center, and we were concerned it would be noisy, but the hotel has taken steps to mitigate the noise from signs reminding guests to respect the quiet needs of other guests and the steady hum of the a/c in the room which served as white noise. We were not bothered by any noise from other guests. The room was decorated in what we called "Danish Modern circa 1970" which was outdated, but the room had clean towels, comfortable bed, decent lighting, and all the basics you need for a good hotel room. The front desk staff was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about local attractions and restaurants. Continental breakfast was included and offered up a good variety of breads and rolls, cereals, and yogurts, plus very good coffee.

Room Tip: If you have children with you, ask for a first floor room - easy access to pool; no children then as...

Thank you for choosing The Greenporter Hotel and we hope you will return to explore the North Fork to continue exploring the vineyards, farms and beaches. Summer weekends are the busiest and as a result command the highest rates but our weekdays rates are $100 less per night for the same room. So we hope you will take a few vacation days and come back our way to capture the remainder of the summer!

I recently stayed at the Greenporter with a friend; we are both 31-year old women visiting from NYC for a few days.

Generally speaking, the hotel has many positive things going for it, including:
-excellent location---you can't get much closer to the center of town, but it's still nice and quiet
-cleanliness--our room was immaculate
-breakfast--much more than I expected for a continental breakfast (yogurt, granola, cereals, pastries), and served until 11 am, which was nice while on vacation.
-the pool--nicely sized, with one extra-long lane great for laps, plus a jacuzzi
-parking on site

A few things just struck me as a bit odd.
-the hotel seems very understaffed. One day it seemed two guys had to take care of everything, which meant waits for things like pool towels and sometimes the front desk has no one at it. Also there seemed to be a general sense of confusion among the staff, though they were generally pleasant.
-the restaurant and wine bar of the hotel, Cuvee, appeared to not be open at all during the time we were there, and we were there in August, high season.
-the pool is unsupervised---only annoying insofar as this meant there were several small children in the jacuzzi, which seemed a) unsafe and b) not what adults in a jacuzzi are looking for.
-The hotel has an admirable focus on being environmentally-friendly, but when we left our dirty towels on the floor, the housekeeping staff just left them there. Weird. There are also sort of aggressive messages all over about having to pay for the linens if you damage them, which seemed a bit overboard to me.

But generally speaking the hotel was a good choice for staying in Greenport.

It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed our little hotel with all it has to offer. We love being in the Village of Greenport and pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our rooms and our customer service. We give credit to our housekeepers, laundry staff, maintenance staff and breakfast cooks and buffet attendants to delivering the complimentary continental breakfast, the sparkling rooms and the maintenance of the pool and grounds. Although you only see two to three people at the front desk, there are many people behind the scenes serving our guests and 30 guest rooms. We do apologize for the oversight of your towels on that occasion but we can assure you that this was an aberration. We look forward to having you visit with us again and making sure you have everything you need. Thank you again for your feedback and support.

We went to the North Fork for a wedding this past weekend. Rooms in the area are jacked up because of the season but clearly this room was over priced. It was clean, moderately furnished and well located to the downtown. The complimentary breakfast was well prepared. We were required to pay for the 3 night stay in advance, probably because people in the past have left after a night. I will look elsewhere on our next trip to the area.

We are happy to hear you enjoyed your accomodations, breakfast and the location of The Greenporter Hotel. We realize that room rates differ greatly in other parts of the country and we see that you were visiting from the great State of Virginia. We alway encourage our customers to thoroughly research the area to familiarize themselves with pricing and accommodations in Easter Long Island. We can assure you that The Greenporter Hotel offers the best value for this level of lodging on the North or South Fork as well as Shelter Island. Many of our regular customers check out at 5 am or 6 am for their fishing charter or golf outing and the front desk does not open until 7 am. For this reason we charge the balance of stay prior to check in. This way the customer can check out at any time. We look forward to seeing you again.

Great stay for a quick weekend with our family. Loved the sparse, chic style. The kids enjoyed the pool. Great breakfast spread, the restaurant seemed lovely, but we did not eat there. We walked into town both evenings with the carousel and ice cream parlors being a bit hit.

I sold my house recently in Greenport and wanted to visit my friends again. The prices for most of the "downtown" hotels are not to be believed. The Greenporter provides a minimalistic, clean and quiet room for a far better price. Dinner at the restaurant was great. I had the chicken, one friend had the salmon and another the tuna tartar, all was very good! The complimentary continental breakfast is a big plus. If I had had more time I would have enjoyed the wonderful pool area. I'll be back!

Room Tip: I was in the "quiet area" on the second floor.

Thank you for your feedback and support of our little hotel in The Village of Greenport. We offer the best value for this level of accommodations on the North Fork, South Fork or Shelter Island and always encourage our guests to do there homework in the region prior to booking. It sounds like you certainly did yours and enjoyed the value we deliver in both and guestrooms and our restaurant which offers some of the lowest prices in town for the quality of food we deliver. We look forward to your next visit and hope you will stop by and say hello!
