Stirling House Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #4 of 10 Greenport B&B and Inns
Reviewed 22 June 2013

We just visited the Stirling House a week ago for 4 nights and included in our stay the Vine Time tour package with JoAnne. This gave us the opportunity to tour a number of wineries (buy wine) and eat at several of the area's best restaurants. We arrived on Friday afternoon - a bit earlier than our plan but Clay met us at the door and welcomed us in as if we were family and helped carry in our bags. That was how our terrific 4 day stay started. And it got better after that. Each morning his breakfasts were incredible and served as a humble chef and host that he is. We ate on the front porch looking out at the bay and each morning the weather was spectacular. The room we stayed in was upstairs and was equipped with a private bath (as they all are), a TV, DVD player, iPod dock, AC - honestly all of the amenities we needed and more. The bed was as comfortable as home and the decor had special touches that demonstrate Clay's personal care for the house and his guests. Two other couples stayed over the weekend and while we stayed on two more days, the level of service did not waver - he treated us with the attention and care that we felt when we first arrived. We also connected with the other two couples to the degree that we hope to meet again at Stirling House and are now Facebook friends. That is what Stirling House and Clay created - an atmosphere of family and friends. He greeted us upon our arrival with a bottle of wine from a local winery - amazing. Every couple received bottles of wine based on our preferences - and he asked in advance so he got it right. He was careful to inquire about dietary restrictions, likes and dislikes, etc. and all of our meals were perfect. Clay also knows Greenport in depth and helped all of us find things that were of interest to us. He is a well respected member of the B&B community in the North Fork area and for good reason - he is an Innkeeper of the highest order. We not only will return but have recommended this experience to friends and family since our return. For those who seek relaxation, great food, wine, small town atmosphere, Greenport is the place to visit. For those who want the best B&B experience in the area with a host who cares to make it special and make you feel like family, Stirling House and Clayton Sauer are what you are looking for.

As upstate New Yorkers, this was our first trip to the North Fork of Long Island, and we're very glad we went and stayed at the Stirling House. What a perfect location, so private, situated at the end of a quiet, tree-lined street with a view across the Sound to Shelter Island, yet within two blocks of the quaint shops and boutiques of downtown! The nearby wineries are not to be missed, with many of them occupying former farms, their tasting rooms built artfully into the barns and existing structures, and, with very intriguing red and white vintages to try for a reasonable price. Our gracious room was filled with antiques, and had an electric fireplace for added ambiance. The innkeeper's gourmet breakfasts were unparalleled; Clay has taken baking classes in New York and Paris and made us melt-in-your-mouth croissants, vertical omelettes and a breakfast apple kuchen. We highly recommend this property!

Stirling owner Clay with cordial assistance from Cheryl made our 38th wedding anniversary weekend a memorable occasion. Clay's special touches renders the front porch experience a complete multi-dimensional sensory culinary and serenity event. Gourmet breakfast, summer breezes, wind chime melody, serenity tones wafting subliminally, fanatastic bay views is a must for anyone visiting Greenport. Stirling House is a classic B&B experience ! Thank you Clay, thank you Cheryl !

we stayed at Stirling House at the beginning of May with our friends. We were all taken with Clay's hospitality and the charming property. Our room was clean, comfortable and imaginatively furnished. The breakfasts were a gourmet feast and Clay's croissants the best we have ever tasted outside France! All in all a totally good experience and we were reluctant to leave!

Room Tip: We slept in the Shelter Island room which had a lovely view over the water!

Went out to Long Island for our 27th wedding anniversary on May 22nd. We had been to Clayton's first place back in 2004, so this was our first visit to Bay Street. Even though the weather was rainy and windy our stay couldn't have been better! The room was ultra clean with a very comfortable king sized bed. The view of the water is excellent and as we love to walk, we were close to downtown and many fine restaurants. The breakfasts were better than you would ever get at a fine restaurant and Clayton is about as good as a host can be. Thanks to the Stirling House, we had one of the best anniversary's ever.

My husband and I stayed at the Stirling house for the first time this past weekend and had a great time. We have never been to the North Folk before and from the first phone call, Clay was very helpful, recommending restaurants, wineries and places to see. The Stirling House is located on a quiet street across the street from the water. Clay welcomed us when we checked in with a glass of wine and homemade treats. We stayed in the French Room, which was immaculate and nicely decorated. Each morining, we were served a delicious homemade gourmet breakfast on the porch and during the day there were always homemade treats and snacks available. The B&B is located a block from the main town of Greenport, so you can walk to the restaurants and shops. We ate at Noah's and the Frisky Oyster based on Clay's recommendation. Both restaurants were very good. If you are looking for a nice relaxing weekend, in a romantic B&B, the Stirling House is where you should stay. I know that we are looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: The French Room had a separate sitting area with a sofa and chair. This room is located on the firs...
