“Interesting?”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

I don't think there is much middle ground here. You're either going to accept the way it looks or not. It is not something you will get used to.
Aesthetically, it is the same as the day it was built, albeit older and in a more worn condition. We stayed in the motel and found it to be o.k. The floor tile was very interesting as was the pink color of the bathroom. Very 50's. The bed and room was comfortable and was separated from the front by a sliding door (which didn't work). Breakfast of muffins ,cereal, and bananas were provided. Which was a nice gesture (along with the milk). The staff is very pleasant and were accommodating to our questions and check in procedure. We had to be patient though because they gave the previous guests in our room a late check out and then they still wouldn't leave. This I found interesting though. While waiting in their lounge, I noticed they don't stay at the front desk but remove themselves through a door just behind the counter. On the other side of this door, I could see a disheveled bed, as if they come out, talk to you, then go back in for a nap.
But that is the way this motel is. For some, the Silver Sands will be questionable. Why don't they clean thoroughly, update the furnishings, etc. but it seems to me to be a family run business trying to keep up. There are a lot of cottages as well as the motel to keep up with.
For the pool, we found it too far a way and set within the woods too deeply to want to spend time there.
The reason I feel it attracts so many visitors is that it is really right on the water with a nice beach access. For small kids, this is a great location. The sand is soft and the water is not to rough.
For Kayaking, they do not have any rentals there, you must coordinate with another company who will meet you at the motel or another chosen location.
The town of Greenport is a short drive from the motel and is a very pleasant walk around area. Definitely worth seeing. The kids will love the newly renovated boardwalk area with a nice modern carousel.
This motel was booked heavy the time we were there. Regardless of the reviews you read, good or bad, they are still going to be there doing what they do the best they can. If you want super clean new and updated rooms, you need to look elsewhere, but know that you won't find another place in the area with a beach front like this. For some, that will be o.k. There are only so many choices in and around Greenport, most in newer condition. And all with good and bad reviews.
Be wary of reviews that say this motel is a 4 or 5 star review. It is a 2 star motel, nothing more and nothing less. The staff are great, it is the cheapest you will find, and it has a nice sandy beach.

We just returned from Greenport this weekend. We stayed at the Silver Sands Motel. Upon arrival we were given a cottage for the first time, we usually stay in the motel. The cottage was great. The beach is on the Peconic Bay and the view on the beach is tremendous. You can see Shelter Island, Greenport and Southold. It is a relaxing atmosphere. The location is perfect for the wineries, farm stands and all of the wonderful restaurant in Greenport. This is our favorite place to stay and can not wait to return. Terry and Jean, the owners are very accommodating. It was a wonderful time. I clicked on restaurant in error. There is not a restaurant on the property.

The private beach is amazing, which I had a view of from my room . The motel is very retro and I loved it. It is not the average prepackaged room but offers a slice back in time when the world was more genuine and less decided by large corporations. The Silver Sands is family owned. My only regret is I have not gone there for the last twenty years.

Easy, friendly & comfortable. Our 3rd year. .Basic family friendly & happy people. We aren't high maintenance & don't need much. Our 3rd year. Fun times & easy living. The cottages are the best for space. The convenience of the weber grills everywhere & the calm beach area with plenty of lounge chairs for all was great. Nice. Simple. Friendly.

My wife and I just got back from another amazing weekend getaway at The Silver Sands.
We have been coming here for years now and every time is better than the last.
Even though we only live about 45 minutes away, staying here is truly a unique experience.
It's unlike staying anywhere else on Long Island.

I will say upfront that if you're looking to be pampered, than look elsewhere.
If you're looking for an upscale Hampton's experience, then go to the Hamptons.
This is a true North Fork experience.

The Silver Sands is an older family run motel.
It's situated less than a mile outside the main town of Greenport on it's own private beach overlooking Shelter Island.
It's clean, it's comfortable and most of all, it's relaxing.
The owners are extremely helpful and accommodating - unless of course you're making unreasonable and unrealistic demands (no, they don't have room service so don't even ask)

You can spend the day just enjoying the view from the beach or pack up a picnic lunch and head out to any one of the 40+ wineries in the surrounding areas.

If you want an action packed weekend with trendy people at loud night clubs, this isn't the place for you.
But if you want a relaxing weekend "away from it all with" with great wineries and amazing restaurants all within a stone's throw, then look no further than the Silver Sands.

We've been coming to this spot for many years and have stayed in everything from their motel rooms to the cottages to their largest house. Rustic and far from fancy, every place is comfortable and relaxed for young families, couples, seniors and everything in between. A huge waterfront location that looks more like a mountain lake than a salt water bay, it's perfect for swimming, kayaking, water skiing and more. The sandy beach with small waves is ideal for even very young children. There's also a swimming pool. Greenport Village is a terrific vacation spot. It has the charm of a New England seaside village with a carousel smack in the middle of its quaint downtown. Plenty of dockfront areas to stroll right by the old-fashioned fishing boats, ferries and multi-million-dollar yachts. There's lots of food choices -- breakfast spots, pizzerias, family restaurants and even a few 5-star Manhattan eateries. Wineries are all over the place. Family run for decades, the Silver Sands owners are sweet people who go out of their way to make your stay a pleasant one. Returning guests always talk amongst ourselves how hard-working and special the owners are, making you feel like you're at your own home.

We only had three nights to get away and there was never a thought to go elsewhere than Silver Sands . We absolutely love it . The Staff could not be more friendly or accomodating. We had a motel room, very close to the private beach. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. Continental breakfasts are also included. We never tire of returning here. The location is perfect, literally a mile into town to browse the many shops and dine at one of the many restaurants. It's peaceful and relaxing. A great place for couples or families. We also always make a stop to the local farmers market on our last day . You can't beat the local veggies! Please check out Silver Sands if you are looking for a unique experience.

Room Tip: We prefer the Motel rooms which have two comfortable beds, a microwave, and small refrigerator, tabl...
