This is our second stay at Silver Sands.
The service is great. They owners are friendly, accommodating and pleasant. They provide breakfast each day (muffins, cereal, milk, coffee and tea), which is a great plus. The location is convenient to most activities out there and the view is outstanding.
But, do not book here if you are expecting top rate rooms. The place is old, run down and in need of a serious upgrade. We had orange shag carpet and a sagging sofa that has seen much better days. However, even though it needs the update, the place is CLEAN. And to us, that's the most important.
It's a great value - just don't expect anything new.

Room Tip: We love the house - the hotel rooms are too small for us.

It was 18 months since our first, by chance, visit to Silver Sands; turning left off the main road, through the woods and over the railtracks simply hightens the anticipation. Just crossing two parallel lines and you're in a totally different zone, an another State of Mind. The welcome is quietly and artlessly sincere. Jean remembered us from our first visit, laughing sympathetically and supportively with my partner at my Brit humour. "I like you couple" she said with a genuine warmth and smile. She asked us what we paid on our last visit and accepted our quote without question; her son, on checking out, asked us what our agreed rate was and rounded it down!

There are already numerous complimentary comments on the cottages, decor, age etc. which we readily endorse; however, its people that make a journey, destination, stay memorable. Jean, her son and staff were so welcoming and helpful yet inconspicuous until their assistance or advice was needed. Silver Sands is the perfect antidote, retreat from 'modern' lifes demands.

We hope to return in a few weeks.

Old style motel that will remind you of all the places you stayed at as a child with your parents. Reasonable. I can't stand that families can't afford vacations anymore because the motel rates have gotten to be so high. The pleasure of this place is how removed it is from the main road. The sense of peace garnered from having your own beach, with a nice hunk of woods between you and the highway makes this place priceless. Nice for couples or families. The little basket of munchies was much appreciated when we got there. And being able to start the morning with a cup a coffee and a muffin without leaving the room is nice. Even better if you take it down to one of the lounge chairs on the beach and begin your morning gazing at the water. Maybe it's just me, but I don't need spa linens and fancy shampoo. Give me a place where I can take off my shoes and walk to a beach hand in hand with my hubby, or bring the kids and know that they have calm waters to swim in. A gem of a motel.

Room Tip: I have never stayed at the cottages, but have been told they are fun. The end rooms are larger with...

I don't think there is much middle ground here. You're either going to accept the way it looks or not. It is not something you will get used to.
Aesthetically, it is the same as the day it was built, albeit older and in a more worn condition. We stayed in the motel and found it to be o.k. The floor tile was very interesting as was the pink color of the bathroom. Very 50's. The bed and room was comfortable and was separated from the front by a sliding door (which didn't work). Breakfast of muffins ,cereal, and bananas were provided. Which was a nice gesture (along with the milk). The staff is very pleasant and were accommodating to our questions and check in procedure. We had to be patient though because they gave the previous guests in our room a late check out and then they still wouldn't leave. This I found interesting though. While waiting in their lounge, I noticed they don't stay at the front desk but remove themselves through a door just behind the counter. On the other side of this door, I could see a disheveled bed, as if they come out, talk to you, then go back in for a nap.
But that is the way this motel is. For some, the Silver Sands will be questionable. Why don't they clean thoroughly, update the furnishings, etc. but it seems to me to be a family run business trying to keep up. There are a lot of cottages as well as the motel to keep up with.
For the pool, we found it too far a way and set within the woods too deeply to want to spend time there.
The reason I feel it attracts so many visitors is that it is really right on the water with a nice beach access. For small kids, this is a great location. The sand is soft and the water is not to rough.
For Kayaking, they do not have any rentals there, you must coordinate with another company who will meet you at the motel or another chosen location.
The town of Greenport is a short drive from the motel and is a very pleasant walk around area. Definitely worth seeing. The kids will love the newly renovated boardwalk area with a nice modern carousel.
This motel was booked heavy the time we were there. Regardless of the reviews you read, good or bad, they are still going to be there doing what they do the best they can. If you want super clean new and updated rooms, you need to look elsewhere, but know that you won't find another place in the area with a beach front like this. For some, that will be o.k. There are only so many choices in and around Greenport, most in newer condition. And all with good and bad reviews.
Be wary of reviews that say this motel is a 4 or 5 star review. It is a 2 star motel, nothing more and nothing less. The staff are great, it is the cheapest you will find, and it has a nice sandy beach.

We just returned from Greenport this weekend. We stayed at the Silver Sands Motel. Upon arrival we were given a cottage for the first time, we usually stay in the motel. The cottage was great. The beach is on the Peconic Bay and the view on the beach is tremendous. You can see Shelter Island, Greenport and Southold. It is a relaxing atmosphere. The location is perfect for the wineries, farm stands and all of the wonderful restaurant in Greenport. This is our favorite place to stay and can not wait to return. Terry and Jean, the owners are very accommodating. It was a wonderful time. I clicked on restaurant in error. There is not a restaurant on the property.

The private beach is amazing, which I had a view of from my room . The motel is very retro and I loved it. It is not the average prepackaged room but offers a slice back in time when the world was more genuine and less decided by large corporations. The Silver Sands is family owned. My only regret is I have not gone there for the last twenty years.

The cottages are the best for space. The convenience of the weber grills everywhere & the calm beach area with plenty of lounge chairs for all was great. Nice. Simple. Friendly.
