Silver Sands Motel & Beach Cottages

We decided to take the kids and escape to the North Fork, and what a beautiful spot we found at the Silver Sands! The kids enjoyed the sweet little beach and the pool, and we got to relax in quiet comfort in the pretty, secluded setting with views of Shelter Island. Dinner in Greenport was a breeze (only a mile away), and our accomodations were homey but quite cozy and comfortable. We'd happily go again -- it was excellent!

Let me start by saying that if you are not looking for a fancy 5-star retreat on the North Fork, this place will suit you just fine. The motel is right on the beach, just minutes from the historical town of Greenport. I went on a recent trip to Long Island's wine country with my husband and some friends. The North Fork of Long Island has many bed and breakfasts, but not many hotels/motels. I found this motel on TripAdvisor, and it sounded like had everything one could want for a summer getaway: a private beach and a pool, in a prime location. We were originally quoted a price of $175 a night for a motel room. When we called to actually book the room, they told us it would only be $150 a night. Upon check in, we were upgraded to a cottage, and were only charged $50 a night per person. We were a group of five. My husband and I got a one-bedroom cottage, while my three friends got a two-bedroom. The cottages had a screened-in porch, living room and kitchen. You could tell they hadn't been updated in a while, but we had heard the place was a little run down. Everything was pretty clean. The pool closed by 5 everyday, which didn't make any sense. The private beach was definitely a plus. It is lined with umbrellas and lounge chairs and has a nice view of Shelter Island. I would definitely recommend the Silver Sands.

We have been vacationing at the Silver Sands for the past 5 years and has been outstanding every time. The staff is super accommodating to provide a relaxing experience by the bay. What we enjoy best is the relaxing activities such as swimming either in the pool or bay, BBQ's at sun down, building sand castles, watching the oysters being farmed, collecting sea shells, and taking in the wildlife. Having traveled the globe I find total solace at the Silver Sands, unlike any other. I have noticed a couple of postings that clam of shabby rooms, I have yet to see them. Of course the Silver Sands wasn't built last month, but they are well maintained and attention to cleanliness. But if I haven't convinced you yet and your looking for bland stark cookie cutter room I suggest to keep driving east to Orient and catch the ferry to Mohegan Sun.

We had the family on the East Coast and decided to get away from the city for a few days, and chose wisely with Silver Sands. The location is stellar, really beautiful and peaceful on the Peconic Bay, and our long weekend was happy indeed. The 1950's stylings are fun (the place has loads of character in a really good way!), and we appreciated the amenities (microwave, mini-fridge) which kept things convenient. The staff were all very friendly, we loved our stay, and next time we're out there we'll be back!

I have to tell you that after reading the wonderful reviews on TripAdvisor, I was absolutely shocked when I walked into cottage 34. It really is sort of a run down dump. Fortunately, the place was clean, the mattresses and pillows were comfortable, and except for the carpenter ants, there were no bugs inside. But the living room furniture was in such bad shape, someone said it looked like they had picked it up off the side of the road. It was not a comfortable place to sit and watch TV in the evening. Plus, it smelled musty. We went to bed by 9:30 each night and were up at 5:30 so we could get out and do stuff for the entire day. It was that uncomfortable. We had two bathrooms in this cottage, and I turned on the shower in one and the water squirted EVERYWHERE because there was a leak in the hose. Too bad it's so rundown. The location is great, off the main road, on the water, abutting a wildlife preserve; and the owners seem very nice. They could have a gold mine on their hands if they renovated the place. It is SO shabby! We paid $150 a night for this! Just a few weeks earlier, I paid $170 at the Millennium Hilton in Manhattan! We had friends who were at the Townsend Manor Inn (which got worse reviews on TripAdvisor), and their room was small, but nicer than our cottage.

My husband and I stayed at the Silver Sands May 30 for one night to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary. We had been there the year before, and promised ourselves we would try to make this a yearly anniversary trip. Upon checking in, we were "upgraded" from the regular room we had last year to an ocean-view cottage. What a great surprise! Upon arriving at the cottage, we were pleased to see how large it was. In fact, it could easily sleep 6, as it had 2 bedrooms, a small kitchen, dining room, tv room. with a giant tv. There were 2 bbq's outside, along with a picnic table, and 2 lounge chairs. It was lovely sitting watching the sun go down in the evening - like having our own private piece of paradise. This cottage was the largest of the cottages we saw there. Yes, the cottage was not the most modern thing ever, and showed a bit of wear and tear - but we are easy to please, and it met our needs perfectly. The price couldn't be beat, and the staff and owners are some of the nicest people we have ever encountered in our vast travel experiences. We also received a bottle of L..I. wine and some snacks upon checking in, and had the bananas, juice, cereal, milk and muffins in our room for breakfast. We left relaxed and rejuvenated, and can't wait to return next year. Thank you, everyone at Silver Sands, See you next May/June for #27!

Yes, it looks like it was built in 1965 but the place is clean and right on the crystal clear water and sand beach. Family run and they bend over backwards to make you feel welcomed and valued. Fresh fruit, milk and breakfast items along with late-night snacks in the room upon your arrival. It's not the Ritz, but it's clean, comfortable, and very family friendly. Lounge has computer with internet service. Highly recommended.
