“Absolute little gem; great fresh seafood!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

The lobster roll was filled with perfectly fresh and perfectly cooked lobster with just enough mayo and tiny bites of celery to bind and add texture. It came on a nicely grilled brioche-type roll and was a simply and expertly prepared dish. My daughter had deep fried soft shell crab on a nicely toasted roll with sesame seeds and a side of aoli that had a pleasant kick to it. This too was wonderfully prepared and was in no way greasy - cooked with respect for a fresh catch. There were two crabs on the one bun and my daughter, a foodie from Boston pronounced it to be "superb."

The prices were very good, the vibe friendly and the wait staff pleasant and attentive. A very pleasant treat and a place I will surely revisit.

“Unusual collection of cold soups etc to take out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

This place is perhaps best for take-away, to make your own backyard picnic. It's well-located on Front Street in the tiny "downtown" of Greenport. Parking out front on the street is limited, so you're best to walk here.

The food and supplies are gourmet - meats, cheeses, sandwiches, and, surprisingly, chilled or frozen soups for take-out. They even have some very expensive gourmet ice-creams (in small containers).

The variety of soups is interesting; we tried the watercress vichyssoise, and found it thick, delicious, and creamy. The cold chicken pot pie was the best we've ever had, with big chunks of chicken. We would return just for those chicken pot pies! None of these foods were cheap, but the flavors were great. The staff are young but helpful. Unfortunately, the pastries behind the cash-register sell out fast, and are few in number; for a huge pastry assortment, go to the Blue Duck Bakery nearby.

We will gladly return here if we're ever back in Greenport.

Thanks for visiting our restaurant & store. We sure hope to see you next time but meanwhile we would like to say thank you for pointing out that our chicken pot pies are good cold. Our pot pies are usually served hot by servers here at our tables or taken out to be heated at home. (We offer dozens of soups, both fresh & frozen, some meant to be eaten cold.)

“Don't Miss This!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

The last two times we visited Greenport, we didn't make it to Salamander's, even though it was high on my list. This time, we visited our second day in town, and liked it so much we went back the next night.
The fried chicken is a MUST-HAVE. It is delectable. I read that Chef Claudia uses Browder's Birds (a local poultry purveyor) and the quality is excellent. This is obviously fresh, never-frozen chicken, prepared by hand with care. We both had 2 piece platters and the serving sizes were ample, even bountiful. The purple slaw is terrific, and the fries (both regular and sweet potato) are simply heavenly. The next night, my husband had the Kobe beef burger with cheddar, bacon and onions which he deemed "perfect" and I had the very best soft-shell crab sandwich ever.
The waitstaff is young and somewhat inexperienced, but they try to make up for that with kind attention, and-- at least with us-- succeeded. Our waitress the second night, Nicole, made it her mission to make our experience simply great, which it was. I've never before given a 50% tip on a dinner bill; she really deserved it.
The food is five stars; I'd visit here on off-peak times when not in a rush to enjoy the food without being hampered by service hitches. The staff should be better trained on the wine list so that they can answer customer's questions-- in a pinch, go with local wines or their ample beer selection. BE PATIENT, and have fun!

Many thanks for your kind review! However, our chickens are Amish in origin, antibiotic & hormone-fee. We hope someday to be able to use local organic birds but right now they cannot supply the 600-700 birds per week we require. We are so delighted you came to dinner. Please say hello next time you're in town.
