Of the wineries we visited, this was the best (we also liked Dr Frank's and Keuka Lake, we did not like Heron Hill). To me, there are 3 different scenarios for a wine tasting.
#1 you get some samples and go on your way.
#2 you get some helpful information and feel welcome and helped.
#3 you leave feeling like family and friends.
Well we left feeling like scenario #3. There are 2 big differences that separate this winery from the others. #1 is the guide that takes you through the wine tasting. Extremely knowledgeable and personable, friendly and not hurried at all. Our guide, John, explained everything in great detail. The history of the area, the wineries, the grapes, their philosophies, their brewers, and also how to pair certain foods with wines and why they worked together. But for all of his expertise and help, none of this would have made a difference if their wine was not good. Thankfully it was not and in our opinion was the best we tried. We are not wine experts by any means, but if you go to several wineries make sure to go to Ravines and you will see the differences that make them so much better than everyone else.
In addition, they also packed up our purchases and packed them better than the others. They have cardboard inserts made just for packing up their wines (Dr Franks was pretty good with this as well). In addition to our purchase, we were able to ship some of their wines to friends and family directly from there without our having to handle it and only pay for the shipping costs which was very reasonable. Our tasting cost $2 per person plus we purchased a cheese and cracker plate for $5 (well worth it). We got to see how the wines interacted with certain cheeses. So we not only purchased several bottles of wine, but also some of their cheeses and chocolates. I forgot to mention how good their chocolate is as well. We can definitely see ourselves going back here and spending the day there sitting at one of the outside tables, enjoying a great view, and enjoying some wine and food amongst friends. Fantastic experience and their guides are top notch. We felt compelled to leave a generous tip, which still did not feel like enough.
