“Great secret”

Belleayre Mountain Ski Center
Reviewed 3 March 2014

Granted there are issues that come with a small place (one of the lifts stopped for 30m midday for maintenance, forcing everyone to walk back to the lodge), but no-one minded. Great for a weekend of skiing from NYC. Low key, inexpensive, happy service, no lines, no incredible runs but incredible family place. We'll be back

Wish there was more skiable area.

This great little ski area was built in the late 50's. This year they have renovated some of the facilities to improve the mountain. There are no inexperienced skiers from manhattan skiing down the center of the mountain in your way. The mountain is divided very well into sections so you don't run into others. Great one day trip from NYC area.

It is no frills good skiing.

First off, we really like this place, it's state run, old school, really good terrain and they have two good bars.

On the downside, this place drives me crazy in that people seem to think they're entitled to 'reserve' tables for the day, especially in the Overlook Lodge. I've seen people spread out their tablecloths to mark their territory. I find this incredibly annoying and the staff/mtn could do a better job at preventing people from doing this. Also, for some reason they can not get the lines to move faster off the Super Chief chair. Not quite sure what that's all about, but it's frustrating.

That said, the trails off Lift 7 and Tomahawk, tend to be much less crowded and provide access to great terrain for intermediate - advanced skiers. If you have kids that like to ski in the trees on the sides of the trails, Deer Run, off Tomahawk has great opportunities for this.

I was here Thurs Fri and last Sunday of Presidents week with my wife plus 10 & 12 yr olds - varied abilities from advanced beginner to confident on blacks and we all had a great time. Lift lines were never more than 5 mins and generally nothing at all. And the pistes were in great condition and keeping as all entertained all the time.

To get a 5? A couple if the chairs (Tomahawk & 7) were difficult to get on and off and watch the mid station - your poles can get trapped and broken if you are going straight through. No warning signs but all the staff knew where ours got broken ...

But I will be going back - it was great.

There is about half of it that could be easily reached if one extra trail was groomed (an existing service trail), but for some reason you could only do so if you jump off midway from the lift 7, a feat only for the most daring. Otherwise you can take Howie's Highway, which is closed if there are races, in which case you can't use 50% of the blue slopes. That was the case for us. Ticket was full, though, of course.
