July 9 & 10, 2006

THIS WAS OUR 2ND VISIT AND YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT WE WOULD HAVE LEARNED OUR LESSON THE 1ST TIME. THE OWNER WAS ARROGANT & UNPROFESSIONAL. THE TWO TIMES WE HAVE BEEN THERE MR. ANDREWS ALWAYS COMPLAINS ABOUT MONEY.
1. Don't use the wash cloths for your face if you have makeup? Ask Mr. Andrews to bring you "rags"? (This is posted on the back of the door to the bathroom along with other "Guest.....manors") Also posted that he loses one washcloth for every two female rons that stay there. SUGGESTION: Buy brown washcloths!
YUCH
There were two used, dirty, unwashed "makeup" washcloths provided in a basket.

2. Due to my asthma, we left a note and asked to keep the room "cool" after the room was made up. It was 85 degrees & extremely humid & the room was in full sun. Upon returning to the room & asking for ice at the office, Steele Andrews, complained that we kept the room at 60 (big exageration, we asked for cool not 60) and that he could not afford to pay for AC when no one was in the room. In the meantime, we were supp'd to come back to a hot room with a 5,000 BTU AC unit that would take hours to cool down. He was not concerned that there was a medical problem with one of his patrons, only his pocketbook.

3. We requested toilet paper for my Mom's room & I was told he left it in the closet (there was none in the closet). He actually argued that there was extra paper in the room when there was not. When I also requested a "back up" roll because we had 2 people in our room, he actually commented that we had gone thru the roll already? (actually 1/2 a roll) Such unprofessional arrogance to say the least. Imagine complaining about asking for a roll of toilet paper. He finally gave in and gave the rolls but had a huge attitude problem.

4. So you pay for the room, toilet paper and AC, but restrain yourself from using it. This place is a joke and the price for all of this, $529.00 for two room for TWO NITES.

5. All the pictures, trim and headboard were very dusty & dirty, the dresser looked like it had been thru the war. The corner shower had black mold all around the perimeter. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Very run down for the price, I don't think he will be in business very long between his attitude & the way he treats his patrons (his bread & butter) & runs his business.
.
The place was left cleaner than we found it!

One of our regular guests has begged that I finally reply to the "poor mouth hotel". So, here goes...

First, it is true - we are very careful with the money we collect from our guests. Being a little country motel, we work very hard to make numerous improvements. For the last six years, I can safely say that more than 95% of our earnings have been re-invested into the property. We have detailed our efforts on our website. Once in a very great while, we get a guest that really does not have much appreciation for the effort, it is hard to take. There is much more to this business than the money. We want to do a good job. It should be more about kindness, but that one guest in a thousand can make it pretty difficult.

Our rates are not $250 a night. This guest paid $125 during high season... a rate that is about 30% less than the average room in this area. We really want to charge less and have more business... and thereby have more repeat business. In fact, about 70% of our business is "repeat".

As for the rest of her comments, I really do not know what to say. I remember things much differently. We really are not so bad. I hope she has a more positive experience when she travels elsewhere.

S. Andrews

The Silvanus Lodge is a tiny (9 rooms) motel situated amid acres of grassy fields with trees and a nicely-sized, very attractive, outdoor swimming pool. Hillsdale is a marvelously convenient location, midway between Hudson, NY (great antique shopping) and Great Barrington, MA, the southern gateway to the Berkshires & a terrific town in its own right. Set well back from the road, you'll enjoy a good's night sleep free of the traffic noise which mars a stay at most other motels in the general area. And be assured that the rates are indeed inexpensive for this neck of the woods which attracts visitors all year round.

Formerly the Celerohn Motel, an early 60's motel which had seen far better days, it was purchased several years ago by the present owner (a native of Louisiana and veteran of the hospitality industry) who is undertaking on-going improvements. It's still a work in progress, but one being done with TLC and rather funky-fun panache. The bathrooms are small: instead of a bathtub, there's a corner-angled, walk-in tiled shower with glass surround; the rooms, while not pinched, are not huge (the larger unit with kitchen, is set off on its own); and there isn't as much storage space for luggage & clothing as you might wish, especially if there are more than 2 people staying in the room.

But new carpets, window treatments & comfy beds have been installed, all is freshly painted & squeaky clean, and the owner is eager to please and a fountain of information about the area with "insider" recommendations for activities, restaurants, etc. Thanks to doors at both the front entry and the patio area, there is cross-through ventilation for the rooms (and yes, you can open a window, always a plus in my view); the patio terrace, overlooking the fields, is a lovely place to sit and savor a morning cup of coffee -- or a BYOB nightcap under the stars.

The Silvanus is not for everyone, as its well-done web site forthrightly acknowledges. If you want more than basic amenities, you'd be better off elswhere. But for those of us who are weary of predictably cookie-cutter, chain establishments, who want to recreate the all-American road trip of our childhood (or experience that for the first time), who love finding a place with personality -- it's perfect!
