“finally found it”
Reviewed 30 March 2012

After searching the world for the perfect holiday destination i believe we have finally found it.

The hotel; huge spotless, comfortable rooms with air con, massive comfortable beds with extra pillows upon request at no extra cost, quiet, peaceful balcony.

The grounds; very well kept gardens with an abundance of bird life, vultures circle above all day long, which was a little alarming at first, (watched to many films) sunbeds galore, no need to get up at stupid oclock to get the towel on the bed, can get full around the pool but it's to hot there anyway, lie on a bed on the new decking and watch the tide come in beneath you.

Food; perfect, simply perfect, we went half board, breakfast and evening meal, both superb in quality and choice, i personally recommend the pancakes with honey, we had snacks at dinner time with coffee, in the evening we tried the cocktails and more coffee, before we went home we settled up our bill which came to an astonishing £170 we had taken £1000 in preparation, the chef makes a point of talking to all the guests during the week and is very open to any and all ideas you may have.

Staff; my favourite part, i have travelled the world and have never met staff so eager to please their guests, nothing and i mean nothing is to much trouble, a waiter was quite upset when my wife poured her own glass of water at the evening meal, after my wife retired to read in bed i would go and sit with the security down on the beach or at the main gates and just chat with the staff, i ended up surrounded by a huge group of staff sat talking into the small hours, i asked what time they finished work and the said 12 midnight, it was already way past midnight, they said that the guests don't usually take the time to really talk and i was an exception, we had many midnight chats and i feel privileged to be included in them, thanks Jamma.

Trips; did not take any official trips, ask for Habibe, a huge gentle giant that will take you anywhere you want or ask any of the staff for an unofficial tour of Bakou, an eye opener i will not soon forget, it all depends on what you want really, organised tour with a tour operator where everything is set out and planned which feels set up in some way or a local person showing you around a Gambian town, i guarantee an emotional experience.

Tipping; A trip out with a member of staff will cost 500 delasi which is approx £10 but you will be walking, not to far though, Habibe obviously costs more as you go in his vehicle which costs 700 delasi, the three envelope system does go to the staff, which was nice to find out having heard differing views on trip advisor.

Bumsters; had no issues at all but this could be down to my appearance so i don't feel qualified to comment.

I would say that if you are lucky enough to spend any time at this hotel please spend a little time talking with the staff and please try to explain snow better than i can.

special thanks to Jamma, Rainbow and Habibe for making a great holiday fabulous.

Wonderful Lodge, quite and very friendly staff and owner nothing was too much trouble. The chef was also amazing with his delicious different menu's everyday. Our suite was very comfortable with a small garden every suite has a different theme. We sat down on the deck on good sun loungers the sea was quite rough but very refreshing as the weather was amazing. We will definately go back to Ngala Lodge like so many other guests who have been going for many years, a little gem !!

We have just returned from a week at Ngala Lodge. 17/3 to 24/3. Having read the fabulous reviews I thought my expectations were going to be too high. This is an amazing hotel within an incredible country. The owner, staff and other guests were so happy and it felt relaxing from day 1. The new decking on the beach is stunning...try the 4 poster bed with waves lapping beneath you, whilst enjoying a cold drink!
The tales of bumsters and hassle are true but not in Ngala Lodge. Even walking to Bakau was ok...don't be put off by being approached. The guys are very easy to stop and are never threatening or aggressive. We found it quite amusing after the initial foray, especially if you make out you have been before or have Gambian friends in Bakou. Tipping was easy as a £1 does the trick, but it is obvious when you need to do it. Sterling is very welcome here. The hotel will change to Dalasi at 45 to £1. Better rate at the Standard Charter but too far to walk. You can get 4000D in one go, but can put your visa card in more than once.
The hotel has a well organised bill system whereby you sign for everything and pay at the end. It is easy to ask for a running total at reception if you are watching your spending.

We had a late flight so were allowed to keep our room until 4pm. Even then we were offered the room key by reception.

I could go on and on about this place but I can sum it up by saying we will join the many return visitors that fill this hotel. Maybe see you there?

Thanks ... Steve & Sue

Room Tip: Yep...all the tips about upstairs are true...but you can't go wrong really.

Our room (suite) was excellent.Huge bed ,great lounge area and own private garden. (we were in Dogo suite) The gardens were spotless and plenty of loungers with umbrellas. The deck by sea also had nice sun beds with umbrellas.Swimming in sea not really possible but good fun frolicking in the waves. All staff really attentive, food excellent including cooked breakfast. Really relaxing place to stay and Peter (the owner) was really down to earth and friendly.

Room Tip: Did not see much of other rooms to compare.Manor suites more exclusive

Ngala Lodge – The Gambia

It was a second visit to the Ngala the last being some 8 years ago. Since then the Lodge has been expanded but done so to avoid any concept of overcrowding. The room was on the first floor with a sea view. It was spacious with a lounge area, large double bed and a bathroom to match. A private balcony added to the living area.

There is a gated and guarded entrance to the Lodge with a 24-hour reception. Next to it is a small library and a computer for Internet use. WIFI is also available. The Loge is outside of the main tourist area which is easily reached by taxi for those seeking more activity or to sample other restaurants. However, the Ngala restaurant is second to none and is a focal part of the Lodge. Residents always have a table and that can be outside or inside depending on the weather. In February the weather was not at its best.

The gardens are well looked after and there are sun beds with umbrellas strategically spaced about. So you can have privacy or chat to others. The pool offers a swimming option to the sea. One new addition at the Lodge is a beach veranda, a raised wooded structure that is reached by steps down from the garden and provides more sun beds.

If you are looking for somewhere different and of good quality then investigate Ngala. You need to book early as it fill up with repeat clients.

Room Tip: 1st floor - sea view - main lodge

Having been staying at Ngala Lodge since 2001 I hardly thought that there would be anything new to add to my previous reviews…that is where Ngala continues to surprise and delight!
We originally booked 2 weeks in a standard top floor suite, but had to change dates and because of the popularity of Ngala we had one week in a ground floor garden suite (No. 9 Robert Stel) then one week in the Terazza Penthouse suite (No. 6). Having a change of room made the holiday seem longer….and was easy as the staff did all the moving for us!
The Garden Room was spacious, well equipped and relaxing, with a separate sitting area, dressing area, a huge circular shower and a bath for those who enjoy lazy bathing. Tranquil, green and relaxing outside area…perfect!
The Penthouse really is where the title of my review comes true. A chic sitting room, a fabulous bedroom which has an octagonal pyramid roof-light over the bed, through which you can see the stars at night and an adjacent bath. There is also a huge shower. The Penthouse has two sets of spiral stairs, so may not be to everyone’s taste…but it is definitely one of my favourites with the fabulous roof-top terrace complete with outside shower, seating and loungers. With stunning views over the gardens, the bird-life and a much appreciated light breeze....heavenly.
There are no TV’s in the rooms at Ngala…please keep it this way.
The restaurant food was exceptional and varied, with special requests catered for. Jonathan is a brilliant chef - his food is fabulous, particularly the fish!
The sea deck is an innovative new addition to the lounging possibilities; so relaxing to day-dream on the deck during high tide with the sea gently lapping underneath. A bit of re-vamping in the gardens seems to have made them even bigger than before - the Ngala magic?
Something I heard more about during this trip is the fabulous Weddings that Ngala arrange during the ‘green season’ (the summer months). They can arrange everything…the legals, the flowers, the music, the wedding breakfast…and the cake! … forget a stodgy fruit cake as Ngala specialise in creating a chic-boutique alternative!! How romantic and magical a wedding here would be.
As I have seen comments on other hotel reviews regarding worries about security I thought it worth mentioning that we went out one day and (accidently) left the room unlocked and the key in the outside of the door…of course I blame my husband for this!! Nothing was taken or disturbed, everything is safe at Ngala.
We have returned home totally relaxed and refreshed. Thank you to the staff, who are the heart and soul of Ngala Lodge…we look forward to our next visit.x
