Stayed at this hotel between 1st Jan -11th Jan 2014. The hotel is situated in beautiful mature gardens with many quirky sculptures, hidden path ways leading to a veranda overlooking the ocean. The gardens have many private areas for sunbathing with steps leading to the small beach, which has a decking are with sunbeds and waiter service. The restaurant also has a splendid view over the gardens and ocean, the menu restaurant has a good selection of fresh fish and wine. We stayed in the Atlantic Suite on the upper floor, absolutely magnificent views and furnishings with a large veranda and hot tub. All the staff...reception, security, gardeners restaurant, maintenance, maids and Jenny the Manager, who spoke to guests everyday making sure all our needs were met! We stayed bed and breakfast and although the food in the hotel was very good and we eat there every lunch time and a couple of evenings we took the opportunity to visit other restaurants in the immediate area. The Butcher's was our favourite restaurant, the food was excellent with a wide choice of wine and reasonably priced, the puddings are to die for! Other good places to eat are Mam mas 's which serves African food and The Clay Pot an Indian menu. The hotel have no problem in arranging or recommending restaurants. We have already encouraged our friends to book the hotel

I travel on business and decided to ask my work colleagues to come out for the evening to the Ngala lodge this evening (weds 15th Jan). I had rated this place as one of the best I had been too and believe me I still think it is.
I could not fault the food. The food was delicious as always however the service was very slap dash and not to the standard I would normally expect from the Ngala lodge. It was the little things that let the place down this evening, such as having to pour wine yourself the white wine in a nice bucket but with no ice or water to keep it cool. I felt the waiters didn't really care for us whilst we were there yet we still left a rather large tip! I do love this place but I don't think I'll be back in a hurry because of the poor service.

Thank you for your review on your recent visit to our restaurant. We are very pleased to hear that the food was good but are sorry that you consider that the service you received on Wednesday was not up to our usual standard. This is particularly disappointing, for all concerned, given the wonderful review you gave us in November. All we can say is come and see us again next time you are here, please make yourself known to us, and give us the opportunity to put things right. Thank you.

We recently stayed at Ngala Lodge for a week in the new year 1st to 8th Jan 2014.
The staff can only be described as perfect -any problem being resolved immediately. The food was excellent with a great chef preparing fantastic vegetable options for my wife and myself. The grounds were looked after by a dedicated staff as is the drinks and snacks dept that delivers to the pool, garden or beach area. The hotel is peaceful, quietly nestling overlooking the sea in "embassy land" with the British Embassy next door and the town a short taxi ride away, we walked it no problems. The rooms were large, spotlessly clean, with Wi Fi ,TV, and showers that all work really well, We are looking forward to a longer return visit in the near future.
Many thanks to you all at Ngala Lodge for a first class holiday.

Room Tip: We had a suite in the Manor on the second floor overlooking garden and sea would reccomend this to a...

A lovely little hotel with slight dull rooms, nicely decorated and many offering beautiful views across the sea. The beach area is quite small and accessed via steps, but there are some huge expanses of pristine beach within a short walk. The food in the hotel is good and you are not far from a few excellent restaurants, The Butchers Shop being the best we found.

We were met at the airport by our guide and bird watching expert, Abdoullie of http://www.gambianbirdtours.com. We had contacted from the UK and so He had a car waiting and we were quickly out of the airport, avoiding the press of locals seeking to carry our bags. Abdoullie was excellent, he arranged three trips, one inland, the other not that far from the hotel. We were delighted with the service and recommend him highly.

All round a great holiday.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and the experience of birdwatching in the Gambia. You may be interested to know that in collaboration with Makasutu we are offering a sunset birdwatching cruise to our guests. The cruise takes place twice a week, Sundays and Wednesday, with strictly limited numbers. Guests spend a couple of hours on the boat and have the possibility to see many birds. (25 different species were seen last night as well as baboons, a mongoose and a vervet monkey). It really is quite a trip! We hope to welcome you back to Ngala Lodge!

The Ngala Lodge is a superb hotel and for us, the very high guest ratings outlined on Tripadvisor are most certainly justified. Basically, we couldn't fault the hotel on any level.

The property has an excellent layout providing for private suite spaces (both inside and out), very clean public areas, including a crystal clear pool, absolutely superb gardens and a brilliant sandy beach, which is virtually for sole use by Ngala patrons (depending on tide levels).

The rooms are massive, the food is invariably excellent in it's preparation, presentation and taste and the staff in all areas (management, gardens, maintenance, reception, restaurant etc) are very friendly, well trained and extremely professional. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them.

We would highly recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a relaxing holiday in a quiet, very high quality hotel.

Oh, and The Gambia is brilliant too, as is The Gambia Experience travel Co.

The only tips:-

- Take some travelers checks with you, as the commision rates charged on cards by the local banks is somewhat prohibitive (from memory, 5% for Visa and 7% for others).

- Take a decent bird book and a good pair of binoculars. Even non-twitchers will want to know what "that fantastic bird" is.

We stayed a week at the lodge immediately after Christmas. The weather was tremendous and although it is nearly a six hour flight there is no time difference so no jet lag. The lodge is relatively small and although we did not get the room we had hoped for we had a very large bedroom cum living room with a separate dressing area and bathroom. It was beautifully designed with lovely artwork. There was a fairly private although not as private as we would have liked deck area with jacuzzi. The food was very good for lunch dinner and room service, although breakfast was disappointing and on occasion took a long while to arrive. The staff are very helpful and the grounds delightful with lots of secluded seating areas. Extras such as wine although a limited choice were very good value. A good pool area too.

Room Tip: We had room 15 which was fine but no bath and not entirely private on the deck. It's quite close...
