My wife and I were lucky enough to return to Ngala Lodge in February for our second 7 night stay. To put it simply we just love it and pretty much everything about it. This time around we stayed in the Manor Suite 12 and it was perfect. The bed was extremely comfortable and the lounge area was ideal for a late afternoon aperitif....very necessary after a day lazing in the Gambian sunshine. It had a great view down to the ocean and even though the day time temperatures were in the mid 30's it remained cool with the air con never being needed. Unless you are a jacuzzi person and want your own personal tub (in which case book an Atlantic Suite) the Manor is ideal.

The gardens are beautiful and dotted with sun beds, which even when the hotel is full as it was when we were there, were plentiful and surrounded by plenty of personal space.

The restaurant delivers good quality food in delightful surroundings and offers the option of exterior or indoor dining. Whatever you decide you will be looked after by friendly, attentive people who take every care to ensure that you enjoy your holiday.

Ngala Lodge management and staff deliver a superior holiday experience for sure. If you are looking for relaxation, a stress free break, great weather, no time difference and a reasonably short travel time then this is the place for you.

was recommended this hotel for dinner.
Food was excellent but a bit pricey - as was expected for this hotel.
Lovely grounds leading to a secluded beach.
Been there once for dinner - wont go back next time - too many other choices of restaurants in the area. OK for romantic special meal

Our stay at the 5 star Ngala Lodge commenced with 5 star welcome from Jenny. The Lodge has beautiful gardens overlooking the sea below with steps to walk down to the beach.

We had upgraded to the best suite (No. 3), which we felt was good value. It was enormous with a huge bed, 2 settees and a chair and a desk. We also had a little hall, dressing area and a big bathroom with wet room shower. To top it all we had a big balcony with furniture and our own Jacuzzi – we used it every day and loved it (pure luxury!).

The German owner was staying that week so we had lots of chats with him. He is also an artist and there was very interesting stuff in our room – and everywhere throughout the Lodge grounds. The design of the garden was very quirky with lights/sculptures made out of items of junk yard scrap e.g. auto parts, bicycle chains and pedals, cut off gas cylinders and so on. We absolutely loved it.

The main downside was it was too far from the town and amenities – a very dusty road with no pavements – so we had to get cabs everywhere. Down the road was an active fishing harbour and looking down over it a rather scruffy restaurant which served the most amazing seafood – we ate there 3 times.

The Lodge also has a good chef and serves excellent food, but we were glad that we didn’t book the half board package at £25 per person as we didn’t ever spend that amount. And we would have missed our seafood experience. We went out to markets and other places along the sea-coast. Note cash is king as Credit Cards attract a 5.6% surcharge.

The Lodge has very comfortable loungers with very attentive garden staff to assist whenever required. This meant that relaxing in the beautiful gardens, with the waves crashing below became a real joy. And whenever we decided to take a trip the Lodge recommended guides were on hand and proved to be a good investment.

With a proper washbasin in the bathroom to replace the shallow wedge, in which it was not possible to even immerse a sponge, and without the delay in the hot water supply that leaves you wishing you had switched it on the day before, this place could be perfect.

Room Tip: Suite No 3 is recommended for space, comfort and position.

In May of 2012 my new husband and I chose Ngala as the setting for our honeymoon, it offered all we were looking for intimate
a unique charm and a reputation for great service. Indeed on our first visit this was our experience.
On that basis we once again returned for our first anniversary and were welcomed by the local employees like long lost family , the local people are without doubt some of the nicest people we have ever met.
On this basis a combination of hearing Johnathan the chef shouting and swearing at the waiters and kitchen assistants on a couple of occasions , and refusing to prepare a steak for our friend any way other than rare, resulted in us intially speaking to Johnathan.
He appeared to listen however the changes were short lived and we then had to speak to Peter the owner and Jenny the manger, we agreed to cancel our half board status for the second week and ate out every night other than African night. Johnathan does not cook on African night.
To the best of our knowledge we left on good terms, our main complaint having been the awful treatment of the staff by Johnathan and his incredible arrogance. Please note that we did not retract our review of 2012 and did not post a review of the issues we experienced on this visit, as to the best of our knowledge we believed it had been resolved amicably.
We do much to support the local community and attempted yesterday to book a trip for later this year, you can imagjne how shocked and offended we were to be told that we are no longer welcome as " nothing has changed with the food and they cannot meet our expectations!". Interesting - not abusing the staff and serving food as requested does not seem excessive to either of us. We both work in the service industry and manage 250 employess between us, the behaviour we witnessed is never justified or acceptable.
Please note though the bookings were made through The Gambia Experience and the service we have revieved from them has been exceptional throughout, as has that we received from all the local employees.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
We did not take the decision lightly. The decision was not taken on the basis of your complaint but the fact that you chose to make a personal attack on Jonathan. Chefs work under stressful conditions and tempers are short at times.
It seemed to us that in your eyes he could do nothing right, not only in terms of his behaviour, but also his style and presentation of cooking, and you shared your opinions with the other guests.
This led to a divisive, uncomfortable atmosphere which, in a small intimate hotel such as this, inevitably affects everyone.
We therefore decided that it is in the best interests of all concerned, for both guest and staff morale, that we decline your booking. We honestly believe that you will be happier elsewhere.
Thank you.

We were looking for a relaxing time in the sun after the Christmas festivities. We came across The Gambia and Ngala Lodge. We were not disappointed and it was reassuring on our arrival to find that a significant number of the other guests had returned, some many times, to Ngala Lodge.
The Gambia is in the same time zone as the UK so there is no jet lag. Monarch Airlines were barely adequate and from previous experiences buying extra leg room was well worth while. We did the wake up with birds excursion organised by The Gambia Experience which was well rewarding and went with Habib, local taxi driver come guide to see the south of The Gambia and Banjul. Habib is very knowledgeable and both trips were excellent and highly recommended. His brother Charlie is an ornithologist par excellence and he will organise walks which are very informed and enjoyable.
The staff were all very pleasant and appeared happy with a sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble and although the service was thorough it was not intrusive. The food was very good despite the head chef being away due to illness. Local restaurants were also good, The Clay Oven, if you like curry, Mama's on a Friday for a fish buffet,The Butchers Shop, Calypso and Gida's Restaurant are all worth a visit. La Mer overlooks the fisherman's wharf and it is very pleasant in the late afternoon drinking a beer and watch the fishermen landing their catch from canoes and all the hubub that follows.
The overall relaxed atmosphere and charm of Ngagla Lodge is just what we ere looking for. It is not a hotel for pedants nor the pretentious.

Thank you Jenny, and your staff for a delightful holiday

Just returned to the UK from our latest trip to The Gambia and to Ngala. As before, the welcome was warm from everyone from Peter the owner, Jenny the manager right through to the gardeners. Indeed it is the staff that make Ngala the holiday experience that it is. This was our fourth visit and many of the staff are now very much our friends.
The quality of the food was as good as ever and whilst there are other good restaurants nearby, we spend many evenings happily ensconced at Ngala, enjoying the food, the music from local musicians and generally chilling at the bar with a cocktail or two.
If you are looking for an exclusive boutique hotel in Africa you will not find a better one than Ngala Lodge. Looking forward to the next trip already !!

Room Tip: The Manor Suites have their own dedicated garden and the best ocean views.
