this was our 5th visit to sunset beach what a difference on this visit . the staff was miserable and unhelpful. we had paid for air con in our package but it took 2 days of arguments to get it put on . wrong food served but still had to pay for it and it took an hour to come . to top it all my husband was verbally abused by margaret the bar manager for complaining about the service and she tried to poke him in the eyes , we was refused food and drinks after this . the hotel manager a waste of time didnt want to know . we even spoke to the owners of the hotel who said we had been racist towards the fruit sellers on the beach because we were laughing and joking with them , still dont know what this had to do with them ? this hotel is very hostile towards people we would never stop there again but we did find a beautiful hotel next door called the kombo what a difference ,the staff was wonderful the place beautiful cant wait to go back here .

Room Tip: go to kombo rooms beautiful

Just returned from a two week holiday in the beautiful Gambia.

O.K. The truth about Sunset Beach Hotel
.
The good.....Great location, good food, friendly staff, nice gardens.

The bad.......Run down cramped rooms, fire alarms going off in the middle of the night, bathroom fittings broken, electric shocks, noisy rooms due to paper thin walls and adjoining doors.Constant nightime power cuts activate emergency lighting in the rooms!
For hardened campers only.

The ugly.....What the tour companies refuse to tell you before you go is the cost of the air con, (essential unless you can sleep in 30 degress temperature.) It is a staggering £15 per night payable only on arrival. That's a whopping £210 for two weeks. Add to that £30 for the safe (again essential,) and that works out to be an extra £240 onto you holiday cost. These essentials are included in Kombo Beach next door which is a far superior hotel. Our choice of lodgings next time is a no brainer!

Dont be fooled by the reviews put in by the hotel. They are easy to spot.

You will love the Gambia. We have been here several times and constantly meet returning holidaymakers.

Very comfortable beds with firm mattresses. Location is perfect. Staff are friendly and efficient (which is unusual for the Gambia). Will probably stay here next year if we can get it cheap enough.

Have been visiting the Gambia for around 10 years , usuall stay at Kombo , but wasnt open last summer so stayed at this place as alternative . often visit other hotels during stay to see friends and family etc . but never this place before. room was falling to bits , a/c was £15 a night . reception were rude and unhelpful , pool was dirty and breakfast was always a surprise from no complete chairs to yesterdays fruit available !!! one day there was no milk available for teas and coffees!

i do not reccomend staying here, i left after two nights and stayed with a friend on their sofa . i will not be returning here and will be informing all i can about the horrific time i had here.

one positive was the egg man , a proper Gambian smiley man ... most other staff were rude, unhelpful , no understanding of customer service .

they really have no idea what there competition are doing or that they are doing anything wrong . ignorant!

Room Tip: somewhere else !

It was our first trip to The Gambia & we were amazingly surprised....For the price we paid & the star rating this hotel was FAB, the rooms were large & everything worked, the staff were all so friendly & helpful & at breakfast there was everything you could wish for, omlettes,fried,boiled,scrambled,pancakes,bacon,beans,cereal.....we even ate dinner in the
restaurant a couple of times (which we rarely do when on b&b) & that was just as good. The pool was a tad small (you can see that in the brochure though) but who cares when the hotel is right on the beach.
We found a lovely shaded hammock bar (beer 80p) by turning right out of the back of the hotel & walking nearly to the end of the beach, a lovely place to chill away a couple of hrs.

Room Tip: E08 right near the pool & restaurant but not noisy as there arent many children & the music...

The hotel is set in a beautiful garden with lots of bushes and colourful exotic flowers. There is a huge restaurant (not at all decorated) and a small open cafe-like restaurant. We were there in May (low season) and the big restaurant was only open for breakfast, at night we usually had dinner at the cafe. The food was good, a lot of choices and very tasty.

I've been reading other comments about this hotel and obviously there is a huge difference between high and low season. There was no animation at all (not that we care about animation) and the breakfast was very minimal. Staff was not overly friendly but ok.

I had a massage here and this was the worst I've ever had. There are no ATM's in the Gambia and payment in the hotel can only be made with Visa or cash. There is a money changer in the hotel and the exchange rate is pretty good. The bungalows are very nice, well maintained and clean. There is not much to do in the immediate surroundings.

My trip to the Gambia and my stay at Sunset beach was my best holiday ever. .. I'd definately go back. The hotel is on the beach they have a lovely pool, bar and food service.
Help is always on hand from the bumsters (who are usually men, who will for a small fee will share their knowledge of their country with you- as we are all aware nothing in this life is for free) who will take you around the tourist sites, the best places to shop, dine an party. Our tour guides (Bumsters) were called Bora and Kebba, they were so friendly and helpful. In the mornings the would be there waiting outside the grounds of the hotel to take us on our next adventure.
They took us out into mangroves where there is a restaurant made out of wood on the water, the hospitality there was fantasitc. We even had a monkey come and steal our kethcup and a half drunk bottle of alcohol and make way into the trees!!!

There were only 2 downsides was that on our last day a bumster named Batu hung around me and stole my camera (so I have no pics to add to my review). So just be careful, but honestly I'd go back in a heart beat. Just becareful on ur last day as oppurtunists are aware there is little or nothin that we can do about their crimes once we are on the plane or on our way home.
The other downside was that the hot water in the shower frequently went off but if u don't mind living like the locals thats fine!....to be honest, its so hot out there u really need a cool down anyway! lol
