Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 23 April 2012

After 6 weeks of volunteering in The Gambia, my stay - now accompanied by the missus - in the Sunset Beach hotel was excellent. I know it's a cliche, but the staff are friendly and repay any genuine interest in them with friendship and smiles. I have been in The Gambia many times over the last few years, but it's only my second time in The Suinset Beach (last time about 7 years ago!) and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
The food is good (though perhaps not as imaginative as it could be) and the buffet breakfasts are particularly excellent with a wide choice cooked while you wait.
The location of the hotel is excellent - right on the beach, it is also handy for visits further afield. We stayed in a small "bungalow" suite in the grounds and whilst it would not count as 5 star it had everything you could need. The hotel also has free wifi./

Was originally in Palm Beach which was more than disappointing, so we checked out all other hotels in area and after calling in at Sunset Beach immediately contacted Thomas Crooks rep and informed him he was transferring us, no options.
Staff friendly and helpful but not obtrusive. Rooms cleaned everyday, properly, fresh towels daily and flowers. Breakfast excellent, cereals, toast, pancakes, porridge, bacon, beans, sausage, eggs any way you want, fresh fruit and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.
Hotel is about 100 yds from main Kotu area so fewer Bumsters outside, just taxi's and if you turn left there is the 'office' for the local bird watching guides, "Bill Oddie" (we renamed him Odd Billie) was particularly persistent in trying to get us on a tour, but all you have to do is stand on the bridge to see most species.
For getting around we used the green taxi's, One particular driver was very helpful and made our holiday his name is Njogu Bah (Joe) and can usually be found around the Bakotu. Joe helped us transfer, took us to Senegambia strip and Cape Point several times, always good value, he will stay with you until you are ready to return.
Best places for food around Kotu were Ali Baba's and VJ's in the Market area. Dominoes Ok for sandwich in afternoon and you have got to try the fruit ladies, that is their fruit, it can be a long wait but worth it.

A few tips for dealing with bumsters:
1 Say No thank you, politely and firmly
2 Do not tell them it's your first time in Gambia
3 Do not get into a conversation with them (they will follow you forever)
4 Learn to speak Welsh (they haven't)

If you want to book trips, for the 'Lazy Day' book direct with Jane's Boat (00220 7768074, 00220 9912747 or www.janesboats.gm) same boat as TC and much cheaper, and Baboun puts on an excellent buffet. Janes also good for 'Creek Fishing' ideal for novice or experienced anglers. For the 'Root's Tour' see Osman at the tourist office at the entrance to the Kotu Craft Market and negotiate a price, you should get it for around £35pp as apposed to TC's £60pp.

Great holiday and definitely going again next year.

Room Tip: I could tell you the best rooms but then they may not be available for me.

this is not a review of the sunset beach as we did not stay there. we actually stayed at kombo beach but i was unable to post another review until 3 months. please go to the gambia and enjoy a lovely time. its great.please be warned though. i have found out to my annoyance that if you give anybody your mobile number or e.mail address after a while once you are back home in england you will start getting phone calls and begging e.mails.most of which are about their family are starving and they need your help.this is of course entirely up to you but dont say you have not been warned. ps. i will return but be much more careful

We stayed here for 2weeks and met some really lovely people. The staff were very helpful and made you feel very welcome. We have already booked to go back in february next year. We find the weather is hotter than in march it seems to be alot cooler at night. Sulyman the bell boy who shows you to your rooms is brilliant and very friendly we keep in touch with him through e-mails which is fun. All in all a brilliant holiday and cant wait to go back which is strange because we dont usally stay at the same hotel. The rooms were spotlessly clean and towels and bedding always fresh. The restaurant was good quality never had a bad meal and breakfast was a really good choice especially for a continental. You got anything ranging from cereals to a full english and eggs anyway you want them. Eating out at ali babas in the kotu craft market is good also vjs next door but our favorite is sailors down the side of bbs which is bungalow beach hotel. They have promoters on the corner which walk you round to the restaurant. Captains table bit more expensive but presentation is lovely. Also a must for a night on the strip plenty of places to eat choosan excellent.

Room Tip: avoid A block its next to tennis courts from kombo beach hotel

This is a lovely little hotel. As many have stated, the hotels in Gambia are rarely akin to star ratings elsewhere in the world but sunset definitely deserves its 3 stars. It is welcoming and the staff friendly and helpful. The rooms are basic but having visited a few other hotels we were delighted that we used trip advisor before booking. I also wouldn't use the airline tour operators and would go to the reputable local providers for half the cost. Literally anyone will offer, you pay your money and take your chances. Massage on beach very good, kunteh kinteh beach bar the best. Nightly entertainment is provided and loud but ends at 10 pm, good for us early to bed and early up people. Best possible location, beautiful
Walk up to Senegambia strip if you want.

Very small resort set right on the beach, with a selection of bungalows and apartments. Stayed in beachside bungalow- great going to sleep listening to the sound of the ocean! All staff very friendly and courteous but in our opinion the locals on the beach in front of the hotel were the best.
Jed makes fabulous fruit juices, the fruit ladies serve the most delicious plates of fruit with pineapple, mango, orange, banana, coconut, melon etc and Rodney of Trotters Independent Tours took us on a brilliant tour to the slave museum, Roots village and St James Island - an experience we will never forget, but made very special by Rodney who was full of local information and advice.
The holiday rep in the hotel was charging £70 each for the same tour, with Rodney it was more than half that price and he was fully insured and licensed.
Everyone and their dog wants to take you on a trip - including the gardeners, the bar staff, the waiters, reception staff etc -none of them are licensed or insured - but just look on the beach for Rodney (his blackboard is there every day) and you won't be disappointed.
