Just got back from 10 days at sunset, and after reading the reviews, have got to agree with them.this is a great LITTLE hotel.I say little as we walked round other hotels and for my liking they were too big.Everything from the bungalow rooms to the lovely gardens(hats off to harrison, one of the gardeners, great bloke)right on the beech.having breakfast with a view to die for.All the staff really seemed to give that little bit extra to make our stay 1st class. This was our first time, and was a bit concerned about a few things ,one being the mozzies,(they have always loved me the past)but if you take the essential precautions,(jabs cream ect ect)it was no problem, but this was in march. They say its very different in the rainy season.the other thing was the bummsters, now its true as soon as you walk out of the hotel they try there luck, but after a few days i learned, that if you have a joke with them and just say NO,they leave you alone.in fact i looked forward to seeing them every night just to see how i could wind them up.they really have got a great sense of humour. As far as the trips go .all i can say is haggel.if you bear in mind that the average wage £50 to £70 a month(found out the police get £60 a month ,but get more with the corruption)on our first trip i paid 4000 dalasis which included the monkey park (this was at 9 o'clock, which was a waist of time as we saw 3 high up in the trees,so don't go before 11 as there all out in the towns getting brekee)boat trip down the mangroves, and a road trip through villagers and a school.now don't get me wrong i don't begrudge them a fair days pay but a months pay for half a day seemed to much. One more thing which i haven't seen on TA ,is the tide,be careful it is very strong.in our 10 days there we witnessed 3 incidents 2 of witch had fatalities.we left note on the questionnaire at the airport that the government should have some sort of lifeboat in place.Ive said a few times that i will go back to previous holidays but never have. But the Gambia has changed that ,i will definitely be back next year.in fact im looking to see if i can get away in december.and to the best hotel in kotu.

Room Tip: cant really say i was in c3 which was perfect

We have just returned after spending 2 weeks at Sunset what a great hotel.Having stayed in Kololi previosly (Senegambia and HBC) this hotel was absolutely wonderful.
We had a bungalow room which was more than adequate for our stay, our cleaner Ellen was lovely, towels and sheets are changed regularly. Our beds were nice and comfy and we had no problems sleeping , although this may have been helped with the Julbrew
There are plenty of sunbeds both on the beach and around the pool, we preferred the beach and Jam the beach boy really looked after us.
All the staff at the hotel are all really good people from reception TONY to bar, waiters and catering staff, all are really friendly taking time to get to know you.
We had our own juice man on the beach his name was NED, we gave him a hat(a safari type hat) and an old pair of trainers when we left and he was over the moon with these. It is best to give your custom to 1 juice man and 1 fruit lady while there, if you are happy with their service.
Food in the hotel was good, breakfast had plenty of choice ie cereals, fruit, eggs etc. the bread was always lovely and fresh.Meals were about the same price as outside the hotel.
We also saw some good entertainment at the hotel, the fashion show on Sat night was absolutely brill, James the entertainment guy was great at hosting he was a good laugh.
Eating out, you must try JD's sports bar and restaurant turn right out of the hotel,it is next to Badala Park, the food was lovely and they had a really good band on a Thursday. Ali Baba's in the craft market is really nice too. Boss lady is not too good my husband was dissappointed with the meal and service, Captain's table was nice although a bit expensive.
You must have a massage while there they are really good.
Can't wait to return !

This was our second visit to this hotel and we have already booked for next year. What more could you ask for, the place is clean, the staff are friendly and polite, plenty of choices at breakfast and its right on the beach.
The only faults I can find are 1. The noisy generator at the back of rooms 101-110 (woke me early on a couple of mornings) and 2. The lunchtime and evening menu is a bit limited ( but then we preferred eating out of the hotel).
Can't wait for next visit Feb 2014

Room Tip: rooms 101-110 are sheltered from the usual breeze off the sea but have the problem of the noisy serv...

A great location right on the beach. This was our second visit and I was happy to see that the good things are still evident but disappointed that the bungalows still haven't been refurbished. we were initially in B4..very poor quaility and the shower was broken , so we asked for a room change and without any problem were moved to 109. this room is much more spacious and well appointed ...so a result!

I agree with previous reviewer's comments about breakfast..ok but nothing special the the range of fruits has definately declined....but overall it's all plentiful and fresh, afterall you need to recognise this is a mainly Muslim African country so you're not going to be offerred pork bacon and sausages, and I don't go to the Gambia for this!

We always go B & B only as there are several restaurants within 5- 10 minutes walk. Captains Table is good for steak and chicken, the Tandoori does very good curries and Boss Lady has very reasonably priced Gambian dishes. .If you get bored with these options then there is a much better choice 10 minutes taxi ride away. Scala and Tao are particularly good.

There are also several good beach bar restaurants so I suggest you venture out of the hotel and discover what's on offer nearby. i'ts all perfectly safe and adds to your experience on being in the Gambia.

Room Tip: Ask for one ot the larger rooms like room 110. Some ocasional noise from the service road but of a m...

Two week stay at the hotel, returning on 13th March.

Reception staff very polite & helpful

Breakfasts - basic but adequate, don't expect much from the bacon and the sausage is made from chicken, lovely fresh pancakes made to order and eggs any way you want.

Location - good, right on the beach. Quiet place. Enough locally to keep you occupied.

Overall not bad, don't expect 5 star all-inclusive luxury.

Room Tip: Bungalows are quieter but they are hotter - main buildings around the pool are noisier (close to bar...

... Right on the beach and a great view from breakfast (if you are lucky enough to get an outside seat).
Also the layout of the bungalows, with their own gardens, is good.
However these bungalow rooms are in drastic need of updating, the bathroom was rusty and dirty (would not like to cut myself on any of the broken rusty/dirty bits) and the decor is very faded. Also the walls are very thin (probably the inter-connecting doors).
Also the reception area was pretty dark and unwelcoming.
Food was indifferent, a huge choice (probably part of the problem ?) but there are better places to eat very close by, decent breakfast though.
Whilst appreciating that it is Gambia (we have stayed in other hotels) I think the star rating is a bit ambitious - maybe 2 stars ?

We returned to the Sunset Beach Hotel, because we liked it very much last year. However, this year the problems of the place became a bit more obvious. It was the first time that we took a two-weeks holiday and that was simply too long. The breakfast gets boring, as there is never any change - and this year there were even less fresh fruits than last year. The "whacky whacky" person who is there during the day to entertain and engage the public really worked very hard, but after a few days the repetition of what he had to say everyday and the loud music turned a bit nervy. The food in the restaurant has not improved from last year and thus after a few nights we just could not eat it any longer. Fortunately there are enough restaurants around and I like to make you aware of a new Indian restaurant which has opened on the little market and which is really very good. In the bungalow we had a tv set which was hearable, but not seeable, the hotel was not able to do something about it in 14 days! Not that it is terribly important to keep up with the news, but it somehow was typical. Equally the promise that there was WiFi was hardly ever kept, although I understand that this is a Gambian problem not one of the hotel. Why do I still give the hotel such good marks? The people are just lovely, the terrace where one has breakfast is one of the most beautiful and interesting spots in all of the Gambia, we had a lovely bungalow very near to the pool, and when I fell ill everybody cared for me very kindly. I still feel that within this hotel one is closer to the "African" side of The Gambia than in one of the posher places. So I would not mind to return to the Sunsetbeach and probably will do.

Room Tip: Bungalows on row E are nearest to the pool. However, there the noise is of cause max. A is furthest...
