We first went to The Gambia 17 yrs ago when our son was 3 1/2 ! at that time you were advised not to step foot out of your hotel ! Now its quite a different story, don't get me wrong it is still Africa when all said and done, but it is now very safe to wander around and to eat out. We went end Jan for our wedding anniversary and Jan/Feb is the best time to go, the weather is fab with a hint of a breeze to cool you off. We picked the Kombo for its location to outside restaurants, the fact that you could step foot outside the hotel straight onto the beach, and all the fab ratings it had on here.

Efficient check in, happy smiling staff, lovely clean beach, security staff on the beach looking out for your welfare, clean room, plenty of places to eat (recommend The Captains Table/Sailors/Senegambia Strip)
Room - we upgraded to a Suite, and weren't disappointed as it included in the price air con, safe (which you had to pay for daily in other rooms), dvd player, kettle, bath robes - the difference in price wasn't that much once you added the extra bits together.
We did B & B - and were glad that we did, we tried the buffet meal one evening and to be honest were disappointed, it was overpriced and the quality wasn't that good, and we would rather put our money in the locals pockets than the hotels.
Thomas cook - they offered trips but the prices (considering we were in Africa and the locals get paid a pittance were extortionate) !!! very disappointed TC !! as we had been before we decided not to do any of them as we were only there for a week and the trips were exactly the same as they had been 17yrs ago ! But I do know that quite a few people went with the locals outside of the hotel, were perfectly safe and had a fab time - tip to remember "barter" you will be suprised what you can get them down too.
Locals - do you know what, go with an open mind, don't get aggravated by them, they are only trying to earn a living and with not many jobs going for the majority what do you expect. I can't say it doesnt get tedious, because it can do, but a firm "no thanks" or "this is our 3rd time here" or as a last resort "we go home tomorrow" usually works, they are vere astute, they know perfectly well when you have just stepped off the plane, but once they have seen yr face a few times and you start to change colour then they will move onto someone else. To be fair some of the hotel staff could be just as bad trying to get you to sponsor them or just outright asking for money but just say "sorry no" and thats that,
Overall - a lovely week away & we have no complaints.
Ps take your own mugs, I read that tip on someone else's review and it was a good bit of advise, they only have poxy small cups and if you like a cuppa like we do, take it to breakfast and fill it up !

We have just returned after spending 3 weeks at Kombo Beach Hotel. As good as ever. Beach lovely. This was our 16th trip to hotel - we always go in January. I have stated in a previous review that you must remember this is a 3rd world country - trying very hard to attract tourists.

The room was clean if a little dated with powershower, lovely clean white towels - these are changed each day. Air Con very efficient - not very noisey. Occasional power cuts but for only a few minutes.

All staff very friendly as ever, special Hi to Adama (Room Reservation Manager & his lovely wife Yamma). Pool staff great, always on hand to help you. Breakfasts varied and tasty (we just did B&B.) Plenty of good quality restaurants nearby. Scala I think, about the best for food and service. The owner is really hands on, walking round the tables making sure everything OK. Sailor & Clay Oven good.

We have made numerous friends at the Kombo Beach and are in touch throughout the year.

In fact some have just returned and re-booked for 2014.

I keep thinking we should go somewhere different but always seem to end up at Kombo Beach in January!!!!! Weather good, not humid.

Room Tip: Rooms around the pool tend to be noisier. Second block probably quieter. Music usually stops ar...

Returned on the 23rd Jan from a 11 night stay at the Kombo Beach. Once again it does not let us down.Ok some of the rooms are a bit tired and need updating but the superior rooms are well worth the extra bit of money. The rooms are clean and towels bed linen changed to your liking. How much time does one spend in a hotel room with the fabulous sunshine outside etc ?? We only eat breakfast in the hotel which a fine with a good choice of fruit cereals eggs and all the normal things you would expect. The staff are second to none happy polite and very friendly. The beach is superb and the sea a welcome cooler in the very hot sunshine. Lots of good quality restaurants within walking distance or a 10 min taxi to the strip which has a fine choice of restaurants. Overall you cannot beat it for a guaranteed winter sunshine break 6 and a half hours from the UK. When the power fails for a few minutes or the hiot water is not as hot as you like please remember you are in Africa ??
Enjoy

Room Tip: Superior room or premium room

tried something different and pleased above expectations.
the hotel is well run and everybody goes the extra mile to make sure you have a good time.
rooms are basic but well maintained and the daily service is first class. our lady even went shopping for som fruit for us,(at far cheaper rates than i could get).
food was decent and well cooked with always something you could enjoy.
the bars were reasonable and ther was a cocktail happy hour, or 2?, but I stuck to the local beers and that treated me gently. there were a couple of 5.5 gravity which were paricularly good, but needed a degree of discretion.
the beach was very good and hotel security made sure the local traders did not become any problem, but were available if you wanted them.
i would go b&b rather than half board next time as choice is amazing and so reasonable. hotel is still availble, and if you eat out a few times as we did you are not wasting the prepaid half board.
only niggle i could not solve was that the hotel has 'a rule' that each room can only have one key no matter how many in it. so wife and self who after 40 odd years married no longer wish to do everything joined at the hip, had to work around this inconveniance. they said it was for our security??
think the population was 50% dutch 40% brits and10% others, the others seemed quite nice, not sure about the first 90%, especially the women
. overall a pleasant break in the sun.
regards grizz.

Room Tip: premier rooms well worth the extra for the space and extras like coffee making facilities,

I stayed at Kombo Beach Hotel for two nights after one month in The Gambia and Senegal. Main purpose was to slowly return to "normal" Western life.
The hotel could have been anywhere you travel to experience the sun, beach, and inane entertainment, karaoke and tasteless cocktails. The rooms, with clean bathrooms and lovely soft towels, was of average standard, though somewhat worn and with well used mattresses. The breakfast buffet was very good. Otherwise, straightforward food in restaurants. The large number of staff were generally serviceminded but serving took time.
For single women, it may be a test of patience to travel in this part of Gambia as local men are very aggressive with their offers of "connecting hearts," not just on the beach, but also directly at your room door.
TIA - this is Africa, but definitely the lightweight edition!

This was our first time in The Gambia and we had a great time at Kombo Beach. The room was very basic and the shower flooded the bathroom. With no ventilation in there it smelt very damp but was manageable. From talking to other people I think we just got a bad room as didn’t hear any other major problems. It’s clean and comfortable which was just fine. If you want all the mod cons then you are in the wrong place.
We went bed and breakfast which I would recommend. The main evening restaurant ‘Kudula’ where people who are full board dine is a self service buffet which is pretty average and a bit too boring in its food selection. One night was even billed as ‘English Buffet’ which is not why we came abroad! With a handful of excellent restaurants (Captain’s Table, Boss Lady’s and Ali Baba’s) spitting distance from the hotel entrance dining out is certainly the way forward. The food was excellent with some great Gambian food at a fraction of the price in the hotel. Lots more excellent restaurants accessible on the Senegambia strip which is a short taxi journey (400 DS return) or a walk along the beach. Breakfast at the hotel is standard buffet fare with a good selection and the snack bar/restaurant is also good and reasonably priced for a hotel.
Entertainment facilities are good with a variety of activities in both the day and night. Whilst the pool is pretty small the sea is very big and is only a stone’s throw away. Although daily aqua aerobics adds a wave machine functionality to the pool! The brochure states that Kombo beach is a lively hotel but its more Saga than 18-30.
Locals and hotel staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Bumsters were a problem initially but once you have got into the swing of being polite but firm and saying no they leave you alone. The main problem with the hotel (and sadly by the looks of things lots of the resorts) is the fellow holiday makers. Many people return here year after year and some appear to think this makes them some kind of royalty or local celebrities. Others are just rude idiots. Luckily they don’t have much imagination and don’t stray far from the complex so if you go out and about and off the beaten track you can leave them ruling their kingdom and enjoy the peace and beauty of The Gambia. Strongly recommend a trip across on the Banjul-Barra ferry and into Senegal as its quite an experience!
