We spent 14 days in Gambia on December the 28th until January the 11th. As none of us had been to Gambia before, it was a bit hard for us to know which hotel to stay at. after several reviews from different sites we decided to stay at Kombo Beach Hotel. Since Gambia is still concidered as a third world country, we did not really have any expectations of the hotel. and I was surprised! It was way better than I thought it would have been. The resort itself had all the facilities that we actually needed, and even more. The pool area was okay and so were the dining areas. However, the breakfast buffet got somewhat tiredsome after 1 week. Every morning I wanted to have scrambled eggs, the chef told me it is not possible to get. However, I saw other people eating that so I don't know what was his deal. Anyway, the staff was very friendly and I also had sme good small talks with the GM himself.

The rooms could have been better as our room smelled somewhat funky. But what can you expect in a hotel like this anyway.
One thing that was really nice was all the daily activities for the guests that the entertainment department took care of. Water poolo, soccer on the beach, beach volley, bingo nights etc. were some of the nice programs they arranged. I also liked that they had tennis and golf pros in the hotel. Even better was that we got to play with the golf pro a couple of times.

The thing that surprised me the most was the new years party, which was really nicely arranged. The food was delicious, even though it finished very fast. The cow they grilled was really good as well!! The party itself was nice with live band and DJ.

The only downpart was the beach side with all the annoying fruit ladies! Some of them were nice, put too many of them were too pushy. Although, I did do horseback riding a couple of times.

All in all, a very nice stay and will be back some day!

Bit of a strange review of this hotel as I've not yet been.
I've chosen this hotel as of it's location, close to the beach, own pool, on site restaurants and close by to other things.
I've also choosen this hotel and destination knowing that it's a 3rd world country, and know the standards or do not expect them to be like European countries so why don't others!
The Gambia is a developing country and expect power cuts and cold water! Why pick the Gambia to go to if you didn't do your homework in the first place?

We had chosen this hotel as it was the "flat " as I have problems with stairs etc, we booked a superior room but this was on the 1st floor so two flights of stairs..unable to exchange as the hotel was full..we had B &B &used the hotel resturants which we enjoyed very much also went out-side to the tandoor, very good the captains table also good ..but be prepared to wait .
The hotel is right by the side of the beach with plenty of sunbeds complete with alsorts of locals trying to sell you every thing, but the juice ladies do sell lovely plates of fresh fruit , which they bring to you covered with cling film. The hotel has local entertainment in the evening which does not go on late..the staff are very helpful .
breakfast has a good selection and your can get egg's cooked fresh to your choice .
We have visited the Gambia several times & fine it is great place to go for some winter sunshine, we flew with Monarch which was more civil than a previous flight we had taken.Enjoy your holiday, we did .

Our first impression of this hotel was one of mixed feelings. The hotel could use a little freshening up but is exactly what can be expected of a 4 star hotel in Gambia.

We stayed in the hotel part. Apparently there is also a aparthotel section but we didn't see that one. The rooms are basic but are kept very clean. The bathrooms are a little outdated with rusty metal and chips in the floor tiles but again it's what we expected. The rooms have air condition and a television set with international chains but the hotel (actually the whole area) suffers frequently of power losses. One evening we were also short on water, which was quickly fixed.

The hotel is situated on the beach and you can go for a very nice walk to the Bijilo Forest Park. Unfortunately not without constantly getting bothered.

There is a nice pool but note that you get only one free towel per week. However, we had the impression that this was not scrutinously controlled.

The breakfast is extensive but not of very high quality. The dinner buffet on the other hand isn't bad at all with lots of fresh vegetables, themed buffets and on the spot cooking.

The staff is also very friendly and very helpful.

Stayed at Kombo Beach in January. In all honesty was not initially impressed with hotel but after having settled in my opinion was soon changed. When we first arrived the hotel looks a little run down definitely needs a little TLC , which they were in the process of doing. Small things like to small a pool for size of hotel(but there is a fantastic beach which we spent most of our 2 weeks on). Tiles missing from pool and a very slippery floor around pool/shower area.......so take care.

The rooms are ok but the amount of time you spend in them is usually minimal so they're ok. Our bathroom was on the small side and the shower curtain didn't fit shower properly so bathroom always flooded. Our travel companions had a bath in their room with shower in bath so never had this problem.
The beach is fantastic but be prepared for the bumsters they WILL hassle you especially the first few days but be firm and say no. The fruit dishes you can buy from the fruit sellers are delicious and well worth the money but remember to bargain and ask for more of your favourite fruit, the same goes for the milk shakes and fresh fruit drinks NEVER accept the first price quoted there is always a bargain to be made.
The same applies for getting a taxi we found it quite safe getting into the green and yellow taxis which are a third of the cost of the green tourist taxis always barter on the price even if they say its a set price. We paid between 50 & 75 dalassi(green yellow taxi) to Senegambia strip as opposed to 200 dalassi in a green tourist taxi.

There are a handful of restaurants outside the hotel. We enjoyed Captains table and Sailors the best. Most of the time we went to Senegambia strip where there is a much wider variety of restaurants. Here we enjoyed African Queen( Gambian food),Wedads(Chinese) Scala which has a variety of dishes , and Ali Baba's which has the most delicious pizzas.

This was our second visit to Gambia so did not do many trips as covered most of these last time we were there. But we did visit the SOS school/orphanage again taking pens paper books etc.
We hired bicycles from outside the hotel (400 dalassi for half a day) and cycled into the local villages and met some locals. We also had pleasant rides along the beach this I would highly recommend.
We used the spa for massages these were exceptional value for money a two hour massage cost approx £20
There are two bars at the hotel, the hotels own and the sports bar which is around pool area sports bar is independent of the hotel and cost wise is slightly cheaper
Staff at the hotel are very friendly and will help you the best they possibly can although everyone does have a sob story.
All in all we enjoyed our holiday immensely and would return to this hotel again

Room Tip: We stayed in block 2 and had no problems

Another wonderful holiday with the friendly Gambian people.... We have met up again and have become friends. Hotel Kombo beach is still great and the atmosphere is lovely and the staff try to please all of the time. We have been to the Ninky Nanka restaurant this year as it was not quite ready last year. The food is really excellent and is made even better by the friendly staff. This restaurant is situated in the Paradise Club... Try Sailors the fish restaurant and in the Senegambia strip you must try Scalas you will not be dissapointed with any of these restaurants. In the evening the Kombo beach hotel have an array of different entertainment. There are trips to go on all have been great...croc pool...Nature reserve. We even went to the celebrations as we was visiting at the right time...Feb 18th. Just look and choose what you fancy. Please dont let the bumsters put you off they are only trying to earn a living and will go away if you are not interested.

Room Tip: All rooms seem ok but for us we always ask for the top floor. Ground floor rooms have the garden a...

This hotel is ideally located for a beech holiday, there are many restaurants within walking distance. Staff are friendly and accommodating and food served would suit either the english palate or fish lovers. The rooms are 3 star with good air conditioning. Certainly the best hotel in the area. Need to travel for a night life (after 11pm) appx 10 minutes by taxi.

Room Tip: Go for a premium room in either block 3 or 4. (There are four blocks in all). These rooms include...
