Kombo Beach Hotel

Our first time to Gambia and we were going purely for a bit of winter sun. Kombo beach was exactly as the reviews stated on tripadvisor. It is run down, quite scruffy and the room, we went for a premier room, is very spacious and facing onto a lovely garden. However, having said this we would go back again. The staff are absolutely lovely, they cannot do enough for you and are just always smiling. You do get harassed by the "bumsters" when you are on the beach or out and about. However, if you smile and say no thank you we found that they accept this. Please be polite to them, they are only trying to make a living. We ate out of the hotel every night and can highly recommend The Butchers Shop in Faraj (a ten minute taxi ride away) and The Gaya Art Cafe. In fact we didn't have a bad meal or service whereever we went. Had a fab day out on a 4wd experience which gave us the chance to see the real Gambia. Visited a school and took exercise books and pens. If you want lots of night life then stay in Kololi, on the Senegambia strip, but if like us you are happier in a busy but quieter location then chose Kotu. Kombo Beach also has a Healthy Treatment Centre and whilst there I had 3 massages which were wonderful. All in all would recommend Kombo beach and can see why people go back year after year.

Room Tip: We were in block 3 which was perfect. The only block I would avoid is block 1, unless you don't...

Jan/Feb 2013. Stayed at the Kombo Beach for two weeks, our first trip to Africa. We asked for a quiet room and got a ground floor room in block 4 (furthest from reception/restaurants) which suited us fine.

The room was spacious, bed comfortable, reasonable number of channels on the small TV so we could usually watch a film if we wanted to. First two nights we had an issue with the smoke alarm which beeped all night as the 9v backup battery was dead. Fixed on day 3 though. I managed to fix the wardrobe door back in its runner myself! There was a problem with the bathroom that was not fixed - every time you had a shower (clean) water seeped up through the floor by the side of the bath. Not a major problem but not great! Cleaning lady was nice and did a good job (especially as she cleans 30 rooms a day!). Patio area immediately outside the room with two plastic chairs and a small table. Luckily we didn't use these as other guests keep taking them!

Breakfast was good, eggs freshly poached/fried/scrambled or made into an omelette. Always beans + either bacon (better than in Spain) or sausages (awful). Freshly made pancakes or waffles. Fresh fruit, usually 3 from (honeydew melon, water melon, pineapple, papaya). Cheese slices (OK), sliced meat that looked like spam (left alone). Cereals, yoghurt, honey. Croissants, small pastries, very good fresh Tapalapa bread (French stick but soft) Coffee and Tea. Juice was just plain nasty (powdered stuff I think). All round though you could eat enough at breakfast to keep you going for a good part of the day and only really get bored after 10 days or so.

We ate a few snacks and a couple of evening meals at the hotel but were disappointed every time. Bland probably describes things best (but we do like spicy food). Drinks other than the local Jul Beer (£1) seemed relatively expensive for what you got and tasted watered down. The nightly entertainment was a lot better than most I've experienced in Spain.

Service was always with a smile and small tips seemed much appreciated. Sunbeds were comfortable with 3 inch mattresses but we did get a few small bites which we thought might be some kind of tick. Not a major problem for us but if you are on the sunbeds every day expect to get bitten. Internet access was good with one hours access costing just over £1. Wireless seemed to work fine as there were plenty of people with Ipads.

Don't change any money before you get to the hotel as there are at least four small money exchanges right outside the hotel. Just take a few pound coins and let one of the porters handle your bags (give him £1). Try not to get to embarrassed as he jumps you past all the queues and gets you to the right coach in record time! I though the chap loading your bags 4 feet from the trolley into the coach was cheeky when he put his hand out with a few pound coins on it to 'suggest' that you tip him but I did so his method obviously works! Remember the average government wade is about £30 per month so everyone is trying to hustle up a living!

All round though and bearing in mind this really is Africa (so expect routine but brief power cuts)! We'd recommend the Kombo Beach and will probably return there. We had a chance spend an evening at the next Hotel along the beach (the Sunset Beach) and were so glad we didn't book there. The atmosphere was dead and the staff were surely and miserable! Made the Kombo Beach look very good.

This was our first time to The Gambia and the Kombo Beach and will go again, hopefully this November. I find it really annoying when people complain about the amenities, the poor locals have nothing, the hotel might need attention, the plug didn't work, the paint needs redoing..so what, the staff, locals were great, food lovely, nice pool, nice beach, friendly bumsters, tell them no thanks and they go away, but best of all is the weather, really hot and at the end of the day thats what we look for... if your looking for a relaxing holiday, then the Kombo Beach is well worth a look.

Room Tip: Upgrade, we had room 112 ground floor in block 1, close to the pool and bar.

Well 5 years have passed since I last went to the Kombo Beach,Whats changed?
Room 340 Fourth block
Very shabby, paint splashes all over the bathroom, curtains and bed linen seen better days, only 3 power points one not working, wardrobe o/k plenty of hangers, shower o/k, A/C working
in block four the rear rooms are above apartments thus you get a much bigger balcony(you can sit away from the A/C unit)
For 1 week the room was o/k (I doubt if any rooms were much better)
Hotel
Overall looking very tired, no day time animation team. Evening entertainment looked alright (did not stop in hotel at night)
Staff were very good, helpful and pleasant, cleaning staff slow to move used crockery and bottles from corridor.
Breakfast very good if a bit the same every day
Inside the hotel they now have a sports bar, you can watch all your sporting matches? this bar is not run by the hotel, beer is a tad cheaper than the hotel
Did not have an evening meal at the hotel
Eating out
Very good bars and cafe's around the hotel, would recommend the restaurant at the old Destiny casino its called the Nicky Nacky or something like that, Fillet steak to die for
only ate around the hotel all very good
Taxis
Fares have gone up to 200da one way to the Sengambia strip, 400da return with a 1 hour wait (care they will try to charge more' always agree the price with the Driver before you set off)
Yellow Green taxis much cheaper but oh what a state they are in
in Summary
Kombo Beach is just about a 3 star Gambian hotel, but if the price is right say £500 to £600 each for a week B/B its o/k
where else can you go in 6 hours super weather
If you are a bird watcher the Kombo Beach is in the perfect position

Room Tip: Do not book a standard room Apart from the rooms at the back of block 4 all other rooms seem to hav...

Spent a very enjoyable week here, was made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived.

The hotel and is clean, spacious as are the rooms, and the location right by the beach is great. The grounds are well and regularly maintained and all the staff seem cheerful and always say hello.

There is a good and varied choice of places to eat and drink make it a very pleasant experience. THank you :)

First time to The Gambia and Kombo.
Overall fantasic, beaches great, weather lush, people friendly overall great.. hotel (although on Bed and Breakfast) was best option was good.. clean and well organised. Buying lunch in hotel was cheap, good variety just on slow side but hey its Africa!
Get out the resort, croc park and monkeys go yourself no need for guide- local taxi it..
Senigal worth a day out- total experience. Just change Cash in hotel or before going as local exchange is deadly with no banks/ATMs around. Not a trip for the old folks as jumping on peoples shoulders to get on boat over river-seriously
hope ive helped but defo book it you will enjoy!

Room Tip: sea view worth asking for!

After our plane developed a fault we were transferred to the Kombo beach hotel for the night. Having left our similar graded hotel we were horrified to find a filthy smelly 2nd floor room. There was no lift, the shower flooded the bathroom and i ended up covered in bites from the bed. Breakfast was also terrible, I eat most things but the food was very poor. Sadly this hotel should be classes as a 2 star. Budget, cheap and cheerful.
