Dumb_screen_name said it all: "poor fit and finish" but typical for this part of the world.

On the + side: The best water pressure I experienced in Sub-Saharan Africa (South Africa aside), some very good staff members, very large rooms, quiet overnight, great lunch arrangements.

On the - side: Dusty hotel, much noise through building/expanding the hotel overday, only one towel (if any) provided, some (very) annoyed staff, unreliable internet, bad bed quality, horrendous restaurant for evenings.

On the balance sheet: That's what you might expect in Tamale and some argue it is the best hotel in town. It's definitely ok, but only for conferences or strictly sleep-over base for touristic trips, no fun inside...

If you organise a conference for a large group (50+) this might be the only viable option in town. If you organise a smaller meeting or go for holiday, find another place, though you might not get much better...

Room Tip: Stay close to the reception as it helps get a better internet connection (if that matters to you). I...

I just spent a week as part of a workshop, with 60+ people. A very new hotel, with much building still happening. Nice large rooms, well screened, a/c, hot water; good meeting spaces, very good speed wireless throughout the hotel. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful; the team as a whole is still learning how to cope with large numbers, provide diverse breakfasts, etc., and keep all the open spaces dust free (with a building site next door!). My bathroom sprang a leak my first day, it was fixed within an hour. Perfectly fine for a few days in Tamale, though I've not stayed anywhere else in Tamale so could not scientifically compare ...

If you need a change of food options ... there is a nice little bar nearby (behind barclay's bank) called Mike's, and we went to dinner one night at the Mariam Hotel.

My expectations for African hotels outside of capitals is rather low. I don't expect perfect service or the walls to. be unstained. The modern city lodge does not change my expectations. Tiling in the bathroom is missing or kludged together, furniture is old and mismatched. That being said, there is hot water, working AC, and clean enough. It is what it is. Service at the restaurant is slow even by Ghanaian standards. They appear to be adding more rooms in a significant addition but who knows when that will be finished. There are several large meeting rooms so it can work as a conference venue. Flights are now daily from Accra. You can also drive up from Accra in one long day but it is better to break it into two.

We had a local recommend this hotel as nice and new, and indeed surface appearances are nice. However, we arrived late at night, with reservations, and were told we had too many people per room, and we had to pay in american dollars in cash. At midnight they had us over the barrel so we bought an extra room. Well the rooms had no towels so back to request more. The service of basically extorting cash out of us in the middle of night was really unpleasant. I would take my chances with any other accommodation in Tamale. The room I was in had plaster falling off the wall and a huge water mark. Yes, there was a flat screen TV and the room was huge, but I needed a clean, inexpensive place to sleep and this is not it.

Room Tip: Get clarity upfront on cost, payment modality, and how many people per room.

Three of us arrived in Tamale late in the night, needing to go to mole in the morning (a similar situation to other travelers in this part). We only needed the room for about 5 hours as we were leaving early in the morning. The hotel management was absolutely rigid in denying us the ability to sleep three people in one room and wanted to force us to buy a second room for nearly an extra hundred dollars. We decided to search out another hotel room for our third friend. But, while we took a quick bathroom break at the hotel, the manager set some of his cronies to follow us, just to make sure, we weren't going to try and put three people in the room. One of the hotel workers went so far as to burst into one of the stalls while a friend was using it. Additionally, when we got the room, there were no towels, midlew afflicted the walls and so the paint made lake flaky piles on the ground, there was no soap,or warm water. The management also forgot to give us wake-up calls, and in fact gave our wake-up calls to another group going to mole ( a little later that day) 3 hours after we should have received it. All in all, for nearly $100 dollars a room, I'd rather just be mugged.

It's the small things in life that can make a difference. We stayed here on a business trip through the region and from the outside the hotel looked impressive. The owner is currently building an extension, so it seemed that business was going well... on the inside, the story was very different. Light-fixtures with wired hanging from them, broken tiles, missing toilet covers, windows that don't fit in the frame and therefore let the heat in, a satellite TV that lets you receive three local channels and two satellite channel images (don't try the sound, all you get is a hiss). The restaurant was awful, with a breakfast buffet that made you promptly decide to go on a diet. Continuous advice to the staff that, considering the abundance of it in the area, some fruit would be a welcome addition, fell on deaf ears. Overall, the service was lackluster at best. For the price, this is a royal rip-off and the owner would do well to get the hotel in order before building extending any further!
