Do not stay here! They will lie and tell you the water will be on soon, but it never comes. Then you'll be hot (the ac does not do the trick), and just when you're falling asleep, the sound of scurrying mice will keep you awake. Any noise from the hall and adjoining rooms can be heard as well. In the morning, we tried negotiating a discount, because our stay was so brutal, but found out the manager would take the money away from the staff salary. We paid full price for a horrible room and no comfort. Stay away! Might be ok if you're backpacking around and don't mind this stuff, but for an advertised double room with ac, this place did not do the trick for what we expected.

We spent one night at Picorna because we had to catch a flight early in the morning. The place looks really old! They should really refurbish it! although it is old the room and the common areas were very clean. The staff is really trying !
Our room had AC and fan. The AC was only cooling a small part of the room, it needs to be changed. But since it is Harmattan period we were not that hot, so it was okay.
The pressure is very low in the shower but they provide buckets. The whole is kinda small but we really did not need more just for one night. Back from a long trip to Burkina we just needed to take a shower and have a good sleep.
The place is a bit noisy though because it is just opposite a market and there are a lot of restaurants and spots around that can be very loud with their music.
My husband did not sleep that well because of the noise but I was so tired I did not pay attention.
We tried their restaurant. The staff is very friendly!! The food was okay, we had Chinese dishes.Nothing amazing but was eatable.
Well, I would recommend Picorna Hotel for the price and cleanness but not for more than a night!

The Picorna is located near the centre of Tamale with the market and places to eat and drink within a few minutes walking distance. It has a restaurant with a reasonable menu of international and Ghanaian dishes. The rooms are cheap - about £15 for a double with breakfast. The rooms are air conditioned and reasonably comfortable. Hot water is absent but rooms have working showers etc and in the heat hot water is not an essential. The hotel is a bit 'worn' but its price and convenience make it more attractive than some considerably dearer alternatives.

Room Tip: Rooms in thr annexe seem to be the best

Me and 2 other volunteers sneaked into a double room which is not allowed but we did this to cut costs. 45cedi a night for a standard double room, with a shower, aircon and a fan. The shower was brilliant very powerful for Ghana and a new packaged bar of soap that smelt amazing. The fan stayed at a nice temperature and the bed was really comfy. Location is not that good only a 5 minute taxi to shops. Could find cheaper places.

We stopped here for one night on our way to Mole Park, and picked it based on the review in the Bradt guide, which claimed it was a mid-level hotel, for 55 cedes. The location is good, although still a bit of a hike to the STC bus station. The bed was comfortable, the AC worked, but it was very noisy and VERY dirty!

On our way back from Mole, we had to stay another night to catch an early bus to Kumasi. We checked out the Catholic Guesthouse - 36 cedes for a standard room - very nice! (not sure why this hotel is in the "shoestring" category) Had AC and private toilet/bath, on beautiful grounds. Even though we settled for the Miriam - two very hot and dusty days made us opt for a bit of plush comfort - we would recommend the Catholic Guesthouse over the Picorna.

We stayed one night here after arriving in Tamale from Kumasi to head to Mole the next morning. We were barely in our hotel room, except to shower, grab a bite to eat, then head to bed. The rooms were simple but the bed was comfortable. We ran out of water, though, but we are getting used to that in Africa! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The morning we checked out to head to the lorry station to get a bus to Mole we found out that the bus left later than we were told. So the staff were kind enough to let us check back into our room and get a few hours extra sleep, which we were very impressed with!

The breakfast was fine but DON'T ORDER THE BREAKFAST SAUSAGES. They were really hot dogs, and were a ridiculous price for three hot dogs (I think 8 cedis!).

Room Tip: We had a room right near the dining room, which was convenient and we didn't even find it very n...

I stayed at the Picorna Hotel by default, as my two other options happened to be booked out. I had just returned from Bolgatanga, and was only staying there for one night, flying out the following morning for Accra.

Picorna Hotel is probably the best hotel if you want to be really close to the centre of Tamale. It is probably a ten minute walk to the tro-tro station, which is the dead centre of town. However, if you don't mind getting a taxi, the two other options I referred to are certainly better in terms of quality.

I would rate Picorna as a 1.5 star - and in Tamale, that isn't too bad !

I've even had some hotels around the place proclaim almost proudly that they are that rating !

The rooms are not massive, and hardly modern, although I should point out I was out all day, had dinner at the hotel, had a few drinks with a friend, slept in the room, woke up & showered, then headed to the airport for a very early flight. For that, it was adequate. The rooms seemed quite clean, but the water temperature was the standard cold-to-luke warm that you sometimes expect in some Ghanaian hotels. It should be pointed out that taking a cold shower doesn't really worry you when you are in the tropics. It was air-conditioned, which is something I always get, as I struggle to sleep in temperate climates, so in tropical Ghana, it's a must for me.

The menu at the restaurant was very limited in my opinion. I am a very fussy eater, and about the only thing I could eat on the menu was fried rice, which was ok without being brilliant.
