It doesn't get better than this: tropical island, thatched palm roofs, rooms (and bungalows with air conditioning), excellent cuisine and impeccable, discreet service. Hotel Arc en Ciel has it all.

The manager is Italian and brings good humor and competency to his task. The staff are discreet and efficient. Everyone goes out of their way to make you comfortable and at home.
Example 1: I arrived on their first day of the season. I was the only guest in a hotel with 9 rooms and a bungalow. The manager put me in the bungalow, showed me around, answered my questions and had the kitchen prepare a meal for me. I was here for a week and was the only guest throughout. I got to know all the staff. I always had breakfast (included) and usually 1 other meal there every day. I tend to have breakfasts early (6:30 am) and was always greet with a cheerful "Bonjour" from server Alice and company. Made-to-order omelette, fresh squeezed juice (try pineapple), DELICIOUS Madagascar coffee....Meals on "my" table on the open terrace with a view of the pool and the Indian Ocean 10 meters away.

Example 2: On my day of departure I went to the airport but the flight was cancelled. I called my usual taxi ("Gerard" who has a twin brother named "Gerald") and he came the 45 minutes to the airport, picked me up during a roaring thunderstorm and called the hotel for me to let them know I'm coming back. Upon arrival the staff had my bungalow cleaned and ready again and offered to prepare dinner for me. Wonderful! (I later discovered that since I was the only customer the kitchen was closed for the day but the manager called her back and she generously came to work for me and prepared a simple and delicious brochette of grilled shrimp and local rice!

The best way to get around is with a taxi. You'll see other tourists driving motorcycles, quads or cars but driving is chaotic and dangerous -- best leave it to professionals! Taxis are cheap anyway: A taxi can get to the village (20 minutes), wait for you while you have dinner and then bring by back to the hotel and cost you just 50,000 ariary (about 13 euros).

I STRONGLY recommend Gerard Limby (referenced above). Just ask the manager to book him for you. From there you work it out directly with Gerard who is 100% reliable, polite, patient, honest, knowledgable and a fountain of local knowledge and advice (his is born and raised on Nosy Be). Be aware he doesn't speak English, French or Malagash only.
