“THE place to stay in Nkhata Bay!! ❤”
Reviewed 7 November 2012 via mobile

Njaya Lodge can mainly be described as a family! As guests, my partner, myself and in particular my 18 yr old som, were made to feel part of that family and for that I cannot thank them enough. Gilbert, Dixon, James, Catherine and John are wonderful, warm people and made us feel right at home.

The surroundings are stunningly beautiful too, so it's well worth that extra effort to get there. I can't recommend this gorgeous place highly enough!!

Njaya also plays host to a cookery school for young people run by Dixon & James. These lovely brothers offer 6 month courses in catering and hospitality, free except for cost of materials, which give the youngsters life skills and improves their chances of employment. They want to extend their facilities at the main school, situated down the hill at their home to include accommodation for the students, teaching rooms and a larger kitchen. Just returned from Njaya after a gap of 16 years. The Lodge has matured nicely and is a fabulous place to stay. Ideally situated overlooking Chikale Beach, it's a haven from the bustling town.

We stayed in the cheapest accom (lakeside bandas) but there is a variety available. Food is good and plentiful and anything can be ordered.

However, what makes Njaya special are the staff; everyone was hinest, kind, friendly and welcoming. There was a huge sense of fun allied with a commitment to great service in everyone we met.

It would be unfair to name some and not others so I won't.

Won't wait another 16 years before returning.

This month marks my 7th stay at Njaya Lodge, Nkhata Bay Malawi. I keep coming back because it's a beautiful place on the planet with about the nicest staff who truly represent the "warm heart of Africa.". The lodge is spread out next to and above the lake, meaning you have easy access to the water and quiet places to be. At the same time there's a lively center of activity in the main lodge where there is a restaurant and bar and great porch overlooking the lake. Some of the staff have been here since I first came in 1994 and Paul Norrish, the owner, is often on hand to arrange activities, organize travel, or treat you to a cocktail. On that first trip, I had planned to stay a few days and ended up staying a few weeks. The bandas and cottages cover a range of costs for most budgets and there is even camping.

Njaya makes a perfect get away. The cottages and bandas are spread out on a hillside above the lake. Some of them are right at the lake side. A large central lodge features a full restaurant and a bar with pool table and music and a large screen tv. A veranda the length of the main lodge overlooks the lake. The staff at Njaya are friendly and helpful. There is also a bar on the beach where there's music and sometimes live music. It's slightly farther away from town than other places but well worth the walk.

Friendly staff who seemed genuinely interested in us enjoying our stay. we'd intended to camp but lake flies and ants meant this wasn't an option so we were offered a beach hut with a fantastic view of the lake at a reduced rate. We're not into parties, so we were happy to be at the quieter end of the beach: when we walked into town, we didn't see anywhere that we'd have preferred to stay. (Other options looked more suitable for younger/ livelier travellers!) The food was ok but nothing special, although portions were plentiful. Having read some of the other reviews, I'd mention that nobody tried to sell us anything (tours, crafts etc etc).

Njaya is a hidden treasure and definitely worth a stay. It's location is breathtaking; if you can, book the cottage overlooking the lake, you won't regret it. I'm disappointed by the negative review of this place from September, as it completely misrepresents Njaya. It is much quieter than neighbouring lodges, which was perfect for us. The staff are incredibly friendly and go over and above to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Food is great, drinks are reasonably priced and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. It's definitely a place I will never forget. If you want a party lodge, don't come to Njaya, but if you want reliable and friendly staff, a relaxing break with a view to take your breath away, come to Njaya.

Room Tip: Choose white stone cottage....the view from the private balcony is worth every Kwatcha.

This is an average place in Nkhata Bay. We chose to stay here because they accept credit cards. The view and lake coming right up to the cabin made it. Very beautiful! Food is mediocre. Honestly, we wished we had stayed at Mayoka Village instead.

Njaya Lodge has been run by the same family and many of the same staff since it opened for business on Christmas Day 1993. Over the last 21 years we've built a labour of love, in cooperation with the people of our adopted home, and somewhere we hope you will enjoy spending some time when you're in Malawi Njaya consists of a large airy building housing the Reception Bar and Restaurant, a large expansive terrace. With day beds, sofas and lots of relaxation. The bar serves, cold beers, juices, milkshakes and cocktails, whilst the restaurant serves fantastic, burgers, steaks and fish straight from the lake accompanied by fresh vegetables and salads The terrace overlooks magnificent Lake Malawi stretching across at this widest part, 52 miles to the neigbouring shores of Tanzania and Mozambique. We've built a collection of cottages, chalets and houses spread over lush gardens and terraces that lead down to beautiful Chikale beach, the only beach in Nkhata Bay. There should be something to fit every budget. From comfortable cottages perched over the water, to family houses, and garden chalets all ensuite with four poster beds, fans and views. Or rooms in the Beach House right down on Chikale beach, with twin and triple rooms with four poster beds, stunning views and a wonderful large balcony with shared showers and toilets.
