“A wonderful stop over”
Reviewed 19 December 2013

A lovely little oasis in the middle of nowhere with only 92 residents. A great place for clients to stop over for a night to break their journey. The rooms were cool and quite spacious and there is a lovely big pool where one can relax. The food at the restaurant was fantastic and the Apple Strudel is legendary.

We did not spend the night, but had a look at the rooms and facilities.
Basic good lodge – rooms could enjoy a soft refurbishment. Pity the pool was neglected – in the past it was always clean. The Apfelstrudel was delicious and this place is still a favourite stop.

We stayed for two nights at Solitaire and we're in for a pleasant surprise. After the new owners took over they renovated, upgraded and improved. Even the buffet was of remarkable quality. We were in low season and despite that there was enough staff, ever friendly. In short: recommanded!

During 2011 we booked for 2 nights. It was December and very hot. We drove by car (Camry) and the roads were very-very bad! Solitaire Country Lodge was like a jewel in die desert - calling us. But what a surprise. We had to wait for 30 minutes until the person at 'reception' came to our help. We booked in.....very unfriendly staff! No air conditioner in room. We opted for a beer at the outside bar. Thank you for a cold beer! Good! Then we had a go for the apple tart and tea (my wife's apple pie taste's much better than Mose's!). Beautiful landscape! Beautiful premises. Beautiful lodge! But zero service. The little service we had was pathetic, to say the least! The only plus point was the fact that the food was not good, but eatable! After one day we had enough. We booked out. There were no 'manager' to report our grievances with. We paid for 2 nights, but we could no longer handle the unfriendly staff and the zero service and only stayed for one. The only 'good' thing was our horrible trip down the C14 to Walvis Bay in our Toyota Camry. This road was not for a 2 wheel drive sedan (but the desert was so alive and beautiful) but we made it safe! Thank You Lord for a Camry!

I contacted the resort (via email) to discuss the extra day that we paid for. Until today's date nobody contacted me back regarding my request. I, for one, will NEVER ever convince any of my relatives or friends to book at Solitaire Country Lodge.

Room Tip: I cannot enter anything good here. I'll rather pass.

Disappointing one-night stop over. Pre-booked B&B, very overpriced. (NAD1000.00 B&B for one night.) Room OK. The place was deserted. We were the only people in the diningroom. Service and food was non-existent. Three course dinner was atrocious. No A la Carte options available. The food served was inedible! After much complaining to the "Restaurant Manager"?, he agreed that the food served to us was unacceptable and we would not have to pay. There was no sign of Senior Management. We left early the next morning for Luderitz perhaps, fortunately, we did not have to sample their breakfast (although we could have had the picnic pack, which we declined.) On our return to RSA we contacted the agent responsible for this booking, informing them of our experience and dissatisfaction. They apparently forwarded our complaint to the owners but no response has been forthcoming. By the way, Moose's apple pie was nothing to write home about.

We stayed here for one night in July on the way to the national park. We didn't have camping gear and this seemed like the cheapest place close enough to the park with rooms--it was pricey, though (804 NAD for two people--yikes!). We drove from Swakopmund along the C14--CAUTION-- if you have a 2WD like we did, it wasn't fun, like others mention--lots of gravel--still determining whether or not the trip was worth the stress. We arrived at the lodge after dark. The staff member at the front desk wasn't the friendliest at first, but he warmed up. The wait staff at the restaurant (dinner starts at 7pm and breakfast at 7am) was friendly and the food wasn't outrageously priced considering there is nothing else in the area--65 NAD for a game steak and sides--we tried zebra for the first time. The country store was decently stocked with snacks and again, the prices weren't that inflated. The staff packed us a generous breakfast to-go since we were leaving for the dunes at 6am before the breakfast was served--that was nice of them! The rooms were adequate with very hot water--overall, it was fine for our needs.

We camped here one night when visiting the Namib-Naukluft Park.
The campsite is very basic.
The lodge itself looks nice with a swimming pool.

The lady at the shop, who is responsible for the campsite was impressively unhelpful.
There were no tomatoes in the shop, but after discussing for 5 minutes, she went to the back
and returned with 2 tomatoes!
