As part of a group tour through Namibia, we were accommodated at this lodge when, for reasons that are not clear, our advertised lodge was unable to take our group. Although Solitaire is located over 80 slow kms from the park's Sossusvlei entrance at Sesriem, necessitating an extremely early start to the day if you want to get to the dunes for sunrise, the lodge itself turned out to be surprisingly pleasant.
The rooms were pleasantly furnished, with plenty of space, tea/coffee-making facilities, and good, strong hot showers. There were numerous little touches that demonstrated that the people running the lodge care about it.
The motel-style blocks surround a decent-sized courtyard with an incongruously bright green grass lawn (given how one is surrounded by the desert), and a swimming pool. The attached restaurant served a fairly good buffet dinner, with plenty of variety. As one's dinner came to an end, the staff gathered in the dining room to entertain us with some singing which was delightful, even if they're not going to play Carnegie Hall anytime soon.
There is a short sunset walk one can do from the lodge that takes one past their airstrip, with a prominent sign advertising the patch of dirt as "Solitaire International".
Next door to the lodge is a petrol station, store and pub, the latter which features what is widely reported to be the best apple pie in Namibia, if not the entire world. Although that claim is probably slightly exaggerated, we can confirm that the apple pie was very good indeed, and well worth sampling if you are in the neighbourhood.
