“Leopard's guaranteed”
Reviewed 27 December 2013

We stayed here in September 2013 for three nights. This lodge is a short drive inside South Luangwa Park from the main entrance and is wonderfully appointed having all the lodges in a line alongside the river (which was very nearly dry when we were there). Despite that we could still sit on our lodge verandah and watch elephants rolling in the mud, hippos same, wart hogs, baboons, and vervet monkey's galore. Impala's and bushbuck wandered around the gardens, and the odd hyena and buffalo were ever present too. The restaurant was very good (in fact too much food!), including brunch in the bush, a lovely surprise on our last day, and the staff were excellent. Our guides were Brian for the most part, and James for the bush walk. They are very knowledgable and we saw fabulous wildlife including the famed leopards. The bush walk is amazing as you walk close by grazing giraffes, zebra, antelope, wart hogs. Pausing of course for the elephants to walk by! The detail is just as fascinating - examining the animal tracks and tracking by the various dung, brilliant! For us, the breeding carmine bee eaters were the highlight, a bright red and blue riot of colour. An unforgettable experience, go there if you can!

Room Tip: The two lodges nearest the restaurant get some of the noise from the generator. Ask for one further...

We went with a mixed family of Zambians and Americans. We had two wonderful days there. The rooms are nice, the food good, and we saw every animal we could. We saw a leopard go in for the kill, the lion I show was only 5 feet away, and we learned the elephant dance of no hostile intent (three slow steps back). A memory for a lifetime.

We travelled to Mushroom Lodge in a family group of 5 adults plus two friends, and can't speak highly enough of our experience there. Marissa and the staff made us feel like welcome family. We loved the food, the ambience (it felt like the set of an old jungle movie), the service and the animals. The guides were the best we had in 24 days in Africa - 8 leopards in one hour must be some sort of record! We were surprised by a wonderful meal by the side of a river oozing with hippos, and felt in awe of the knowledge of the guides. if you want the holiday of your dreams, this is it!

Well not quite but they get pretty close! An exceptional place. The staff are so attentive, the guides phenomenal: how do they spot the animals so easliy? We hardly got out of the lodge before we had to raise the binoculars. The occassional surprise: drinks at sundown and Saturday brunch in the bush were a delight. Perhaps a bit more soup and a little less rice for supper.

The staff at Mushroom Lodge went out of their way to make us feel at home and comfortable. They surprised us with their hospitality, and even went out of their way to meet the dietary needs of someone in our group. Marissa is the manager, and she went through the list of dietary requirements and handed the meals herself! Our safari guide was excellent, and knew about every single animal, bird and plant in South Luangwa. We had a beautiful evening of sundowners overlooking the river. The staff really made us feel like we were the only guests there (but there was another huge group!) and made it feel like the lodge was tailored made just for us. Highly recommend Mushroom Lodge!

South Luangwa is the most amazing place if you love the bush and love wildlife. We saw so many wonderful sights from seeing lions, leopards, hyena, genet, civet, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, buboon, antelope, hippos and crocodiles. We also saw many eagles, a fishing owl and many beautiful birds inluding the long tailed starling and lilac crested roller. We stayed for three nights.
The location of Mushroom Lodge is superb. We saw elephants, giraffe, zebra, hippo, antelope warthog and baboon all from the lodge.
Our guide Asheed was wonderful and was assigned to us not just for the safaris, but also for meal times and any other trips. On safari, he knew where to go having had about 30 years experience. We saw many leopards during the day and got so close to them! We had a 4 hour safari in the morning with a stop for tea and cakes/biscuits and 4 hours in the late afternoon/evening stopping for a sundowner and then having a night safari. We were in a land rover with raised seating. To really enjoy yourself you need to be prepared to relieve yourself in the bush if necessary. Asheed was able to tell us in detail about the animals, birds and fauna and shared about his experiences in the bush.
The kitchen staff were lovely and friendly. The whole team were so helpful and couldn't do enough for you. Ok, the accomodation was not pristine, but the bed and chairs were very comfortable and the lodge was clean enough and more than good enough for us. Once again the staff added little touches to make you feel welcome.
The security was excellent and they would take you back and forth to your chalet. The dining area and pool area was lovely, with towels provided for swimming. Laundry was included in the price.
We were well fed. Meals consisted of an early breakfast, brunch, tea and supper. The meals were good, if a bit unsual e.g brunch was literally breakfast and lunch on a plate, so you may have fish goujons, sausage, egg and salad, but to me it was all part of the charm and I loved it. I got the impression that Louise and the staff at Mushroom lodge want you to have the holiday of a lifetime and we certainly did.
You could get five star accomodation at some of the lodges in Luangwa, but I doubt you would get better care and attention. We so want to go back there again and hopefully will.

For any bush lover, the South Luangwa is a MUST SEE!

Having heard this many times, I can now say from first hand experience it is not overstating the fact! The game and sightings we experienced were unmatched in almost 40 years of game viewing. 8 leopard in 7 game drives..........nothing more to be said!

Miushroom lodge is a great place to stay, with friendly and attentive staff, deliveing great service. The food is wholseome home cooking, tasty and filling - however the breakfast menu was a little repetitive after 4 nights. The location is superb, with elephants, giraffe, puku, bushbuck etc often in front of the rooms where you can sit on your patio and just enjoy the peace and tranquility of the bush.

The rooms are spacious and beds are comfortable, but with blinds instead of curtains and some old furniture, the accommodation hasn't aged particulalrly well. the rooms are also not as light and airy as I am accustomed to at bush lodges. The bathroom is also a little tatty, but certainly not unpleasant.

As one of the few lodges located INSIDE the park, Mushroom lodge has a real advantage over the lodges located in the GMA across the river and once the rooms etc have a little upgrade, it will certainly be the place to beat. There are a few small criticisms, however I can certainly still recommend the lodge.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same and share a similar view, except be aware that room 1 &2 are RIGHT next t...
