“Bilimungwe - we will be back!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2012

It can't get better than this - and so wished we had booked to stay longer than 3 nights. Our reed chalet was gorgeous. Safely poised above the waterhole, with comfy beds tucked away under mozzie nets, an outdoor and indoor shower, our very own veranda, the chalets blend in with the surrounds of the bushveld. For every meal, we congregated with our group under the thatch boma to enjoy cold drinks and excellent food, home-cooking at its very best. The safari excursions, whether in a vehicle or on foot, were hugely informative - Bushcamp Company has excellent guides whose knowledge will astound you, and whose humour will keep you entertained for hours, wanting to hear and know more. There are so many surprises that it would be unkind to reveal all... you will not be disappointed, and you will want to go back for more. I am!

What an experience having Manda as a guide!!! On our first night drive we saw two leopard, three hyena, herds of puku, impala, ellies, and were treated to sights and sounds of the bush along with Manda's demonstrations of alarm calls. On our first walk we were surprised by an elephant! Manda is the most interesting guide I've had in twelve years of safariing. His knowledge of plants and animals is astounding, and he has a wonderful way of sharing that knowledge with the guests.

Our chalet was very large and nicely decorated, with a good view of the water hole. The handcrafted leadwood double-sink is gorgeous! Food was very good and plentiful. All of the staff were very pleasant and helpful without being overly fussy. We just felt completely contented and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I can't compliment Bushcamps enough about the two camps we visited.

We sayed just 2 nights at Bilimungwe but certainly would have enjoyed staying longer (we also stayed 4 nights at Mfuwe Lodge & 3 at Chindeni - all by the same company). The chalets are spacious and comfortable and really elegant. As much as we enjoyed the Mfuwe Lodge, we really loved the bushcamps for their remoteness, the quiet and the lack of people. With just 4 chalets, the practical maximum is just 8 guests.

The camp manager & staff were attentative, friendly and helpful. And, how on earth do they whip up such excellent meals in the middle of the bush!!?!? The food was delicious.

We didn't see much wildlife in the camp proper during the day (although we heard wildlife in the night) since the watering hole wasn't that attractive to wildlife in May but the game viewing on the morning and afternoon/evening game drives was excellent and we really enjoyed the bush walk.

This place deserves the excellent rating in every way.

The newly refurbished Bilimungwe Bushcamp has been done very tastefully, with the water holes providing lots of entertainment with herds of elephants visiting and then walking through the camp between the houses. We were there in the old Bili two years ago. Excellent hosting from Mike and his team and award winning Manda giving great walks through the bush. How those cooks rustle up such fantastic food so far from modern conveniences is amazing.

Room Tip: October is the hottest month of the year, but also a good time to see game as they all need to visit...

If you're looking for a real safari experience, go to South Luangwa National Park in Zambia and spend some time in the bush at Bilimungwe, part of the Bushcamp Company. My wife and I didn't know what to expect on our first safari but were pleasantly surprised to find accommodations and service second to none in a remote area surrounded by true wilderness. Our guide, Manda Chisanda, will share his passion for the bush and everything in it with you. He will take you to the game, including lions, zebra, giraffes, leopards, elephant, hippos, water buffalo, exotic birds, etc. or will bring the game to you with his uncanny ability to mimic their sounds. No wonder he was named a few years ago as the best guide in the world but you won't hear it from him because he is humble too.
Your camp host, Mike and his staff will treat you like royalty. Our "tent" was spacious and decorated with hand carved furniture and an indoor and outdoor hot shower. The food was excellent.
I couldn't imagine returning to Africa without visiting Bilimungwe again.

Don't come here if you want to see herds of wildebeest (there aren't any in the park). But there is almost everything else. We stayed here for 8 days in November, having stayed for 5 days in 2008 (before it was renovated). The new camp really works, is very luxurious, and nothing has been spoiled by the transition. The three waterholes are right by the lodges and there is always game and birds at them.
We saw lion, leopard, elephant, hippos (there are no cheetah or rhino in the park), but also porcupine, a bush pig, tortoise, lots of the small people, and so many birds. And the great thing is that when you see something you are almost always alone; there are not herds of other vehicles all jostling for position.
Mike was great and the perfect host. The staff are really friendly. Apparently there was an idea for Jamie Oliver to do a programme here. Not sure why as he wouldn’t listen for long enough. The cooking is unbelievably good (and has nothing to learn from him), and all done on one solitary wood fuel oven.
It really doesn’t get any better than at Bili.
