“Flatdogs = Perfect location, comfortable tents, great food!”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

The location is perfect, 5 minutes drive to the National Park Gate. The tents are very comfortable and clean. The daily free laundry service a bonus. The food is a la carte and the quality superb. The choice of beverages is extensive and well priced. The management team, Poalo, Ade and Jess lead by example and all the staff we came in contact with showed us great Zambian hospitality. The grounds of the camp are safe/secure. During our stay we witnessed abundant wildlive including the munching hippos, elephants and giraffes just outside the camp. Watch the Baboons @ lunch; they want their fair share. The early morning drives into the South Luangwa NP were fantastic and we were in awe with so many majestic animals including, Leopards, Lions, Elephants, Giraffes and so on. For us it was a first......and we will return!

Lodge is reasonably priced, food is good, tented camp is beside river with hippos, geese, elephants, lions roaring -awesome. The timid in our group stayed in the lodge. The early morning and all day drives to the park were incredible. Wildlife is still pretty wild and care is taken not to bother animals. The Flatdogs guides were excellent. Go for sure!

Room Tip: Ask for a tent on the river.

This is a very relaxed camp providing EVERYTHING for everyone! The only thing missing is pretension:) this is my second stay and will not be my last!
Lots of hot water. Clean and comfortable. Probably the best camp food you will ever eat!
Ellie's and hippos wander thru camp. Vigilant staff. Down to Earth management.
My Grandson and I enjoyed the pool. And everyone went out of their way to keep our 3 year old happy! From the housekeepers to the Driver and spotter.
Our Game Driver , Byron, was amazing!!! Seriously...... He found leopards while other drivers from other camps missed them. And our spotter, Philamon was an expert as well. We saw leopards both night drives we did and our driver was stellar at finding them and positioning us with the best view.
I am a birder and Crowned Crane has been on my life list. After spotting my first ever, Byron was able to locate a flock of apx 75 by ear.
South Luangwa National Park is the Real Africa and Flatdogs is the only place to stay!

Had a lovely stay here earlier this month - good mid-range camp (one of the few I believe) just outside the park but with giraffe & ellies wandering about on the drive-in from the main road & plenty of hippos close-at-hand during the night you definitely feel close to the wildlife (tho very safe at all times). Lovely staff, fantastic food, beautiful setting with well-equipped safari tents on the river banks, nice little pool & some fab game drives. Would definitely go again & recommend to people.

The location on the banks of the Luangwa, incidentally very populated with hippos, is superb. The chalets are very comfortable, very clean and creatively decorated; very good atmosphere. The restaurant is the best in that neck of the woods and the bar is enjoyable to sit in. This camp is exceptional value for money, well managed, friendly and helpful staff. You simply cannot go wrong.

We have just returned from an extraordinary trip in the South Luangwa Valley during which we were lucky enough to spend five nights at Flatdogs Camp.

Staying at Flatdogs feels like staying with old friends, and indeed, several people we met were return guests, as we hope to be.The camp is just outside the gates of the park, and an easy ride from the Mfuwe airport. We spent most days on game drives from 6-10a and again from 4-8p. I really liked this schedule; we saw lots of active animals - leopards, elephants, giraffes, etc., and still had time for a midday siesta while the animals were sleeping too.

We stayed in the Treehouse for two nights, and a luxury tent for 3. The Treehouse is fantastic because it's common for elephants and other animals to pass right by the platform. We were lucky enough to watch an elephant family, including a baby, for quite a while from the comfort of the couches on the deck! The Treehouse is almost completely outside, so you need to be comfortable with visits from various bugs, frogs, and the resident Monitor lizard. The luxury tents were great too...a little more protected from the creepy crawlies and very comfortable. As much as I love getting away and "unplugging," it is very convenient to have electricity for charging camera batteries, etc. in your tent, and you can even purchase some internet time if you need to check in with folks back home.

We also spent several nights at other, higher-end camps in the area, but we really enjoyed the excellent food and the service the best at Flatdogs. The camp runs extremely well, but maintains a cool, laid-back and relaxed vibe that struck the perfect balance, in our opinion. The service felt very genuine and personal. And the menu they offer is incredible, even for a vegetarian like me. Everything we had so was good, and we often found ourselves planning our next meal while out on safari. Plus, the restaurant runs all day, so you never feel pressed into a particular schedule.

Due to all the stellar TripAdvisor reviews, we had high expectations of Flatdogs and they were exceeded in every way. A big thank you to everyone - Jess, Ade, Paolo, Harold, Kennedy, Jonathan and many others - who made our stay so memorable.

Room Tip: I don't think you can go wrong with any of the rooms. The Treehouse is a fun experience, if avai...

This may be leaned toward Aussie tourists. Ok, decide on price. Looking for 5 star? Want pomp, ceremony and flashy stuff. Don't stay here! Stay here if you want 5 star service with a 4 star price, service that's 1st class, guides who speak fantastic English (sorry, don't mean to be offensive to Zambians but tourists want to know these things). Our guide Jefferry was incredible, passing on knowledge without being annoying. He has a fantastic personality, caring, safe driver ... We stayed at the Treehouse for 4 nights. The first night was pretty freaky, we arrived at night, left in the dark for our first morning safari and first saw the Treehouse at 10 the next morning. Amazing. Our friends who were staying with us decided to spend that morning at the pool, whilst my partner and hung at the Treehouse. We were surround by 20 giraffe, some elephants, kubu etc. are you serious! We had a lockable trunk for passports etc, Jaffet (our "butler") stayed at the treehouse during our absences to keep the place safe... For those freaking out about food in Africa - don't! Meals were fantastic. Zambian people are so friendly, we felt safe the entire time. I could write pages about being in a National Geo shoot or Wlt Disney. Go - you will love it. Thanks so much, Jess, Paulo, Ade xxxx

Room Tip: Stay at the Treehouse!
