“A very special experience.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

This is an excellent camp with efficient friendly management & helpful staff. The food was plentiful & of good quality. The safari vehicles were comfortable & good for viewing game. Our guide Malama was knowledgeable & our spotter Jonathan helped us to see some interesting animals especially on the night drives. Our stay in the tree house was a fascinating experience & the care we received especially from Japhat was excellent.

Everyone has said it well before, so I'll not repeat except to say it was wonderful. Of note, several in my party were afraid of creepy crawlies and we found that the stay in the tent was much more creepy crawly free than the much more expensive camp that we stayed at following this. We also visited the Kawaza village and would highly recommend this to everyone. It was a very humbling experience and well worth the time we spent there. We were made to feel very welcome. Our guide Kennedy drove us to Kawaza so we had had Kennedy with us on all our trips outside the camp. We liked the continuity of that. He was very knowledgeable and an excellent guide. And please, if you have room in your suitcase, take some school supplies for the kids, You can give them to Flat Dogs and they will see that they are distributed where there is the greatest need. Our five nights went by much too quickly, a truly unforgettable experience. June turned out to be an excellent time to go - cool sleeping temperatures at night, very few mozzies, and very pleasant daytime temperatures

If you're looking for a first rate safari experience, this is your place. Superb food, friendly and attentive service, and an exceptional location right on the banks of the Luangwa river make for an unforgettable vacation. The safari guides are knowledgeable and know where to look. Our entire three night stay was a pleasure, and we will certainly return.

Old fashioned hospitality, great food, wonderful accommodations plus great game guides all sum up our trip to South Luangwa National park, thanks to Flat Dogs Camp. When we arrived, reception called some of the managers to come meet. us. We had a quick tour of the camp and our luxury safari tent. We then had a wonderful lunch and later watched elephants cross the river as we enjoyed a glass of wine on our tent porch. Then we had a delicious dinner, off to bed early so we could start our 6 am game drive after tea, coffee and toast at 5:30 am. The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. Returning for mid-day break and another delightful meal we started out for the evening game drive about 4 pm after having tea (with a nice cake). First time ever for a game drive in the dark. Wonderfully done. Returned home about 8 pm and had another wonderful meal. Repeated it all the next day. Woke up on final day and had a nice breakfast and returned home. We will definitely return to Flat Dogs at the next available opportunity!

Flatdogs Camp is on the bank of the Luanga River and if you stay in the Luxury Safari Tents you have your own riverside view. The en-suite tents are large with everything you need, including comfortable beds, The food is excellent, you choose to eat whenever you want and the staff are friendly and helpful. Flatdogs Camp is not inside the park, but nobody told the elephants or the hippos. Elephants regularly cross the river from the park, wander among the tents and visit the dining room and pool. One even lay down for a nap between two of the tents. At night you lie in bed listening to the hippos munching near your tent.
The game drives are very good (the park entrance is only a couple of minutes from the camp, but stay alert as we saw elephants, leopard, bush buck, impala, baboons before we reached the park gate.) with knowledgeable guides who really enjoy showing you their park. A great place to stay, well worth a visit.

Room Tip: The luxury safari tents have great river views

This is just a brilliant place. Have said most of it before in my previous reviews, so just the highlights this time:
Food whenever you want - superb with a family. Great cooking too
Flexible game drives - we did an all day drive deep into the park, saw lions with no one else around, excellent picnic lunch under a huge tree by the Luangwa with no one in sight, sawonly three other trucks all day.
Also sometimes did different to the norm evening drives - left at 3:00pm, back for sundowners.
New tents are great - yes, they are still tents, not the luxury apartments in some camps, but extremely comfortable and perfect for feeling you are really outside.
Hosts all great - Ade & Jess, Paulo, Sam. We particularly liked the mornings Paulo was on as his cat Sanchez made noisy appearances!
We stayed for seven days - longer than 'normal' but made it extremely relaxing.
Oh, and the pool is great fun!

We will be back!

Thanks for a great holiday.

Room Tip: We like the tents facing the Luangwa - 7 and 8 are furthest from the bar / reception / restaurant...

Four of us spent one night here as a bridge between our arrival in Zambia and our following ten days inside the national park. We shared a bungalow with two very adequate first floor bedrooms and en suite baths.
Superfluous for us were the fully-equipped kitchen and the second-floor sleeping loft with the great view of monkeys and other wildlife. We also did not use the swimming pool, but readers should know that these, along with the long dining hours and other amenities, make this a perfect place for travels with children—unless, of course, the pool has been occupied by a hippo, something that apparently happens from time to time.
We did two game drives with excellent and engaged Flatdogs guides.
Food was well-prepared. Service was slow, but we weren't in a rush.
There is both electricity and hot water.
Unfortunately, the young man, Sam, who picked us up at the airport in a completely open car, must have been late for a hot date. He flew over the dusty roads showing no regard for the safety of the local pedestrians nor for our comfort. Had the desk staff not been so welcoming, this may have colored the entire experience.
Happily, it was all up-hill from there….and we're thinking seriously now of a return trip with our grandchildren.
Finally, for those who question the name Flatdogs—that's another name for crocodiles, of which there are many (so don't expect to swim in the river)!

I am afraid that I was away on leave during your stay so sorry that we didn't get to meet. However, tanks for the great review and we are really pleased you might come back with the grandchildren next year. We hope that we can show them a great time as well.

I am sorry about the airport transfer and we have spoken to Sam about this. We try and ensure that all of our guests feel safe at all times and are sorry that this was not the case with your trip from the airport.

I am very pleased that the ladies at reception and the rest of the team made you feel welcome and that in the end your stay was pleasurable.

We do try and get orders to people in the restaurant as quickly as we can, but sometimes during busy periods food that is freshly cooked to order from an a la carte menu can take some time to prepare and I am glad you were not in a hurry. However, we pride ourselves on our service and to think that we were slow in getting orders out is not great and we shall review the process and help the guys in the restaurant and kitchen get things out quicker.

Thanks again and we hope you will choose to come back next year and allow our team to show you, over a longer period, that the service is generally of a pretty high standard.
