This was our first return to Luangwa for forty years so we wondered if the magic would still be there. We needn't have worried, it exceeded our expectations. The setting was pure Africa with a beauty and a sense of wildness where anything might happen. Polly, 'The Doc' and Sebastian were all great company and very well informed. The drives started with a punt across the river which in the pre-dawn was sensational and quiet. Not much river left but it didn't matter.
The food at the Lodge was exceptional by any standards. We loved it.

From the first welcome by Polly and her amazing staff, the three nights we stayed here just got better and better. Attention to detail was impeccable and something we shall never forget. The guides were so well informed and a pleasure to have as company on the game drives. Our room was great and extremely comfortable. The scenery was truly beautiful and the wildlife unforgettable. We shall be returning! Thank You.

From the first view of the camp as we crossed the river to the initial welcome by Polly and Sebastian we knew we were in for a great time in this our first safari experience in Zambia.
Despite being the "wet season" the weather had little impact on any of the drives whilst the slightly stormy skies in the evening made for some really stunning sunsets as we downed sun-downers in some of the most exquisite locations zambia had to offer in this part of the park. The blend of standard drives a first-time bush walk and for us the highlight of the night drives made this both a perfect introduction to the planned 2 weeks break and allowed us to move easily and quickly from work to holiday mode.
With a supporting cast of leopards, elephants, buffalo, zebra and hippo alongside a wide range of birdlife each of the drives out were an assault on the senses and a million miles away from the UK snow we'd left behind.
Alongside perfect meals and great company (only 2 others in the camp with us) relaxation became a byword of our stay.

I had a particularly magical experience at the Luangwa River Camp this past October. I arrived to find that due to a last-minute cancellation, for the next 2 1/2 days I would be the only guest, so I had the run of the place with my own guide. As a serious wildlife photographer I could therefore indulge myself in spending extra long times observing and photographing wildlife behaviors. The guide (Sebastian) was amazing at finding animal life and explaining behaviors. On our first night drive we came across a fresh buffalo kill by a pride of lions; we returned the next morning and evening to watch as the carcass was devoured by the lions, vultures, hyenas and others so that 36 hours later there was little left but skin and bones.

The accommodations are beautiful with clean and spacious huts. After 36 hours of flying there I slept well. The food was excellent, it was great to wake up each morning to a breakfast of 'jungle oats' (oatmeal) that had been cooking over a fire for a few hours.
