Having experienced a number of safari camps throughout Africa it was suggested that to add a completely new dimension to our African love affair we might try a walking safari organised by Robin Pope Safaris’ in the heart land of such activities the South Luangwa in Zambia…...it did not disappoint.
The first thing that strikes you is the organisational skill of the team to ensure that you have a perfect stay; we are still in awe of how they can deliver such wonderful meals in the bush. Our adventure comprised a three day stay which saw us move camp once. Each day was taken up with walks in the morning and late afternoon with a welcome siesta between. Our guide and host for this time was Rob Clifford who’s tracking skills and knowledge were fantastic, coupled with his excellent sense of humour…………thanks Rob I still hear ‘Botswana’ in my sleep this made for both excellent walking but good conversation sitting around the ‘bush television’ at night .
For those who might be a little nervous of getting so close to nature at no time did we feel in danger, that’s not to say that you don’t get an adrenalin rush when you get close to an elephant or leopard but that’s what makes this type of safari so very special, getting so much closer to the detail that you would miss from a vehicle.
As already mentioned, the food was fantastic and the tents very comfortable but the crowning glory were the locations of the camps - these were chosen to give you a wonderful feeling of isolation and that you were travelling in the footsteps of the great African adventures.
If you have the opportunity to take a walking safari, do it, you will not be disappointed and Robin Pope Safaris is one of the best if not the best.
