Royal Zambezi Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 29 August 2014

I stayed here as part of an Odyssey Unlimited tour group. The food was amazingly fresh, considering the remote location, the rooms were very clean and comfortable. Loved the outdoor showers and plunge pools, and eating meals out on the veranda. Best part is that elephants just coming roaming thru the lodge whenever they please. Went on several early morning safari drives and night drives. Saw (and heard) a lion roar, saw lionesses playing with their cubs, and saw a couple of leopards. All was absolutely amazing. Having "tea" in the morning from the back of our open air land rover was lovely, and having "sundowners" in the evening on an island in the middle of the Zambezi river to watch the sunset were magical. Also went fishing for Tiger fish - my biggest fish was 14 pounds. Billy is an awesome and patient fishing guide - highly recommend him. Natalie and the staff were very knowledgeable, accessible, and hospitable. For a remote location that must filter it's own water and generate it's own electricity - this place get's it right.

I don't even know where to start. This was a perfect finale to 2 wonderful weeks exploring southern Africa with our Odyssey/Smithsonian tour group. After excellent game viewing or choosing between a plethora of enjoyable activities at the national park, this was really the perfect place to return to before our next adventure.

The accommodations were fantastic (we had the deluxe with our own tub/plunge pool...do it! Upgrade! You won't regret it!). All rooms, we heard, are wonderful though. We had the treat of hearing elephants (one actually eating from a tree in our 'yard' one evening!), hippos, and all other sorts of wildlife calling around us all night. Great sleeping weather in August!

I can't really say enough about the staff either. From management orientation and welcome to the tirelessly working wait staff (all of you guys are awesome!) to our knowledgeable and personable guides (game drives AND to and from the room), we were beyond impressed.

Our meals were all wonderful as well, whether it was a breakfast/brunch buffet or the delicious pre fixe dinners our group enjoyed each evening, we were stuffed and satisfied! The Sausage Tree Bar was lovely as well...a perfect place to enjoy a pre-dinner Mosi beer or a glass of semi-local (South African) wine overlooking the river.

A huge thumbs up to the spa experience as well...I believe my masseuse was working her first week at the Royal (she's a keeper!) and my Ukuchina massage was a PERFECT way to loosen up and relax in between game drives!

Obviously, I really can't say enough about this place...thank you to everyone involved for such a fantastic time! My husband and I really hope we can return here someday!

Room Tip: Get a deluxe suite with the plunge pool...we stayed in Room 2 which we learned was a management favo...

Located right on the edge of the Zambezi river, the Royal Zambezi lodge was everything and more i had hoped it would be. The incredible views and surroundings that accompanied my stay were OUT OF THIS WORLD!
From the moment i arrived the staff were so friendly, efficient and welcoming. Ewan and Natalie the camp managers were fantastic and ensured i had the best experience during my stay. There was always plenty to do with game drives, fishing, canoeing and game walks scheduled throughout the day though some days i preferred to relax and be pampered in the exceptional beauty spa they have.
The food was excellent and i loved the delicious traditional African cuisine provided whilst enjoying a glass of vino on the deck overlooking the mighty Zambezi river.
During my game drive by one of the highly knowledgeable tour guides i spotted leopard, lion, plenty of elephants, buffalo, WOW i could go on and on. The abundance of wildlife provided exceptional sightings every outing.
I would definitely recommend this lodge to anyone looking to experience the whole African adventure whilst staying in luxury. The team looks after you so well. Thank you again to all the staff who made my holiday so exceptional and memorable.

A beautiful facility so close to nature and yet so well appointed. Offered 5 different activities, each with knowledgeable and personable guides. The area is beautiful. We had elephants come into the lodge area, but felt completely safe and enjoyed their visit. The food was delicious too.

A small chugging boat expertly guided us through curious Hippos and menacing Crocks along the majestic Zambezi river to our Safari destination The Royal Zambezi Lodge. En route we passed the manicured lawns of a private Lodge holiday home of Prince Harry's ex girlfriends family and for him what must have been truly a retreat far from two legged snappers.
We arrived to a "Royal" welcome, smartly uniformed staff greeted us at the landing stage and whisking away our luggage offered us a welcome cocktail. This was to set the scene for the rest of our stay , friendly but non intrusive efficiency in luxurious surroundings . Our spacious "hut" had all the creature comforts you would expect in a top class hotel but nevertheless was unmistakably a camp in the wilds of Africa. Perched on the banks of the Zambezi we viewed the extraordinarily rich bird, mammal and reptilian life from our private deck as well as from the main terrace where we gleaned much information and stories from the knowledgeable staff. Natalie Clark , yes a woman - runs the camp impeccably with humour and charm, and having grown up in Africa is a re-assuring source of knowledge in spite of her relatively tender years. Natalie organized as much or as little as we wished - Jeep safaris complete with our favourite "sundowners" and delicious canapés to enjoy on the savannah watching the wildlife that abounds in the region. Fishing and canoeing on the tributaries of the great river were an exciting and memorable experience. At day end as brilliant fiery skies dimmed to soft night we dined exquisitely by candle and starlight, the music of the night being the distant roar and grunt of lion.
My computer screensaver is a constant memory of this magical time to which I shall return to add I am sure many more thrilling and happy memories.

Staying at the Royal Zambezi Lodge was everything you could hope for on an african holiday. The accommodation was excellent and it looked over the Zambezi river which often saw elephants wading in the water. Plenty of activities available to witness the animals in their natural environment - saw lots of lions, impala, crocodiles, buffalo, baboons, hippopotamus. The staff were exceptional and always helpful. The food was excellent and enjoyed watching the wild life from the decking as the sun went down.
