I arrived at the camp when it was getting dark. I loved the place from the start. It is a small intimate camp but with a huge warm heart and an equally warm welcome. You are greeted by the staff and given complimentary drinks on arrival. I have been to many safari lodges and camps over the years but Old Mondoro is a lovely experience in itself. They have just the right balance of "wild outdoor Africa" and comfort.

Situated right on the banks of the Zambezi, the camp is simple really but always comfortable with "open air" rooms! By this I mean that you feel like you are still connected with the outside due to "open" rooms (there are just canvas shutters which fold down at night, and open during the day onto your private sun deck). The bathroom is an open air shower with bath overlooking the river. You can have a bath and watch hippos and elephants at the same time! And have a bath you must - it is the height of a luxurious experience.

The game viewing is excellent with many elephants in the area and even in the camp a lot of the time. You will never come back to camp feeling disappointed. What makes this place special is its location. The Zambezi can be seen from the boat or by canoe, which is a major highlight. Canoeing on the Zambezi is a beautiful experience and I can't begin to describe it - just do it.

Evenings are a three course dinner followed by natter at the camp fire. Even in bed you're not done - the sounds of hippos and frogs are a pure delight! Thoroughly recommended.

If you define luxury by kindness, flexibility, unobstructed views and authenticity then Old Mondoro is the place for you. Compared to the few other lodges that are located inside the Lower Zambezi National Park, trade professionals denominate Old Mondoro as basic camp.
I prefer to describe it as an exclusive and authentic beautiful little bushcamp. The open plan rooms are situated on the riverbank, are well maintained and have outside bathrooms.
Everything you expect to find in a room of a good quality lodge is there.
Except for flatscreen televisions and highspeed broadband internet connections off course.

The service rendered by the friendly staff and always present management is heartfelt and spot on. The quality of food that comes out of the tiny bush kitchen is better than what is plated up in many big city restaurants. But most importantly: the guiding and game viewing is phenomenal.
I have been on safari many times but never were the night drives this good. Hence the title of this review.

Room tip: Room 3 has the best views over both the lagoon and the river.

This was our 6th trip to Old Mondoro, and as all the other times, it was perfect! We love the simple yet elegant rooms (sumptuous bed and linens; views out over a small lagoon; outdoor bubble bath while watching elephants and listening to fish eagles cry!). The food was excellent; the guiding (Sebastian and Joseph) was perfect!!; the hosts Tess and Dean were delightful and helpful. Really, everything was fabulous and we can't wait to go back next year!!

Room tip: We love Chalet #4, as it's on the little side channel and quite romantic.

I spend some time with 3 friends, and had the best time ever, small and intimate Ryan and Pam did their very best to make everything perfect. Choice of game drive, walking, canoeing, boating fishing. Guides very well trained especially Sebastian, whome has taken us on several drives. He has excellent knowledge on virtually anything about nature, and has many interesting stories about it, explaining in a way that really sticks. I learned a lot! Also fun to be with and relaxed, always felt very safe in the bush around the animals. My friends had been there many times, and I certainly understand why! I will start saving for the nest trip.

Our stay at Old Mondoro was absolutely fantastic. The setting on the riverbank and the beautiful scenery of big trees is just stunning. The rooms are wonderfully set on the riverbank and give you the feel of sleeping outside but with all the comforts of a nice big bed, everything clean and soft and well-protected under a mosquito net.
We had excellent walks, river cruises and game drives. Very good guiding. Thanks so much Joseph! Lots of wildlife and amazing sitings.
Pam and Ryan are the best hosts and the food was also scrumptious.
All in all a perfect stay in the most amazing place.
Thanks again to the whole team at Old Mondoro!

Room tip: All rooms are perfectly set on the riverbank.
