Simply fabulous

Review of Old Mondoro
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Aug 2016
We stayed at Old Mondoro in July and it was the perfect place to finish our trip to Zambia. The accommodation and food is great (including gluten free vegetarian fare) but it is the setting, the intimacy of the camp, the wildlife - if you want to see leopards, honey badgers, porcupines and more - and the guiding that makes it special. I loved the chance to do canoeing, walking, game drives, and boat trips. One of our best wildlife experiences was from our chalet with elephants wading through the lagoon and then surrounding us - very special. You will feel very looked after at Old Mondoro.

We took our two daughters on a safari and our last stop was Old Mondoro. I can't say enough about how magical it was for all of us. From sun up to sun downers on the water we were amazed. Stuart, his wife Maddy and their entire team made this a trip one we will never forget. The hospitality matched the wonder of the beautiful animals and country. This camp sits on the Zambezi river and thus we had lots of Animals living nearby and strolling through our camp. One elephant came so close to me on my patio that we locked eyes. I could have touched him but I followed the safety directions and just held still. He roamed off and I looked to see my daughters standing on their toilet watching. Canoeing down the river was exciting but mellow. Our guides amazed us with their knowledge of their country and we felt safe even watching a kill. We also saw two massive lions hang out together and play before they stood up let out a few low and loud roars and moved off into the night. WOW! every day was an amazing experience I can't say enough about this camp. I hope we can return one day.

We stayed at Old Mondoro for several days in June, as the last part of our 2 week Zambia experience (first time in Africa). It was probably the most rustic of the camps we stayed at, but there was no skimping on accommodations, service, activities or food. A couple of families were return guests, one couple had been to Old Mondoro for 10 years straight, and with plenty of camps to choose from, that says a lot! If we are lucky enough to have the chance, we would definitely return. Old Mondoro is small -- 4 well spaced and spacious cabins each sleeping 2, plus a family suite that can accommodate up to 4 people. The setting is very rustic, and it is right on the stunning Zambezi River, where hippos rant, elephants play, and all sorts of birds dazzle and enthrall . You are right in the middle of your own game experience! The leopard sightings here were one of the main reasons we came, and our wishes were fulfilled on the ride to camp from the Jeki airstrip. Our guide (Old Mondoro guides are reputed to be among the best) was following sounds and tracks, and sure enough, we came upon a mother leopard and her adorable cub. We followed them for quite a while, taking many pictures and were awed by their beauty and grace. On our arrival to the camp, Karen and Jonathon met us with hospitality and welcome beverages. They were wonderful hosts, offering advice, conversation, and even a recipe for some delicious apple muffins! The camp is intimate, and the staff will meet your every need. We went canoeing on the Zambezi, and had a bit of an exciting standoff with a macho hippo, other days we fished, and had a wonderful walking safari, where we encountered some elephants and other game close by. On a night drive, we had probably the most dramatic sighting of our entire trip: a confrontation between a male lion and a couple of leopards who were feasting on an impala. The lion won, and we were literally 15 feet away! Breathtaking. That's not all you'll see though. Elephants, monkeys, baboons, buffalo and hippos are prevalent throughout the camp, and each cabin has a generous back deck with a daybed where you can nap, read or simply watch the wildlife world go by. It's hard to describe the beautiful setting of this camp, every need is attended to, the food is absolutely fabulous, and the staff are completely at your service. Would you like to have fresh baked bread/rolls/muffins at every meal? Old Mondoro. Great selection of South African wines? Old Mondoro. The best Zambian beef you will ever taste? Old Mondoro. Breakfast round a firepit with hot coffee and good conversation? Old Mondoro. A variety of activities including game drives, walking safaris, fishing and canoeing? Old Mondoro. You will encounter bugs and lizards, but they are harmless and part of the bush (besides, the lizards eat the bugs). Our accommodations were wonderful, this camp was somewhat chillier in the evening than other places we had stayed, and every night, a hot water bottle was placed in our beds to warm us up. The outside shower and tubs were lovely. Laundry service was efficient. Highly recommended!

Room tip: 2 cabins are on the Zambezi, the other 2 front the lagoon

We loved our time at Old Mondoro. The location is beautiful, the game viewing is excellent ( both on game drives, and river cruises). The canoe trip down the Discovery Channel is not to be missed .The camp managers, Jonathan and Karen are very personable and fun. All of the staff were excellent and the food was really good! We enjoyed eating meals with the other guests and sharing in the experiences of the day.

We LOVED our visit to Old Mondoro. First of all the camp managers, Johnathan and Karen are fabulous. They are warm, welcoming and caring individuals who treat all their guests like dear friends.

The camp it self is has only 4 chalets so it is very intimate. The view from each chalet is beautiful and we had views of elephants, buffalo and a variety of antelope right from our front porch. A male water buck had taken up residence right outside our chalet during our entire stay.

The game viewing in the area is amazing. We watched a leopard with her small cubs play and feed, elephant herds crossing the river, wild dogs running right in front of our vehicle and so much more.

I can't imagine a trip to the Lower Zambezi without spending a few days at Old Mondoro. We can't wait to return.

We stayed 4 nights at Old mondoro in July, it is a really great, intimate camp, and has great game viewing. Lots of lion and leopard sightings and very good guides.
There is a really good atmosphere in camp, and everyone seems to genuinely enjoy their job. The food is really good and the managers , Johnathan and Karen were very welcoming and helpful, especially Jonathan who went out of his way to salvage a digital camera crisis ( accidental deletion of nearly a weeks worth of pictures). Many thanks!
The camp is in a particularly beautiful part of the lower Zambezi national park, on the river, surrounded by Winterthorn trees and with an open plain nearby, which makes for a good variety of activities, game drives , walks , boat trips and canoeing . The chalets have just the right balance between comfort and simplicity and have great views, animals tend to wander through so you can have quite a good safari just sitting on your veranda.
This is a small camp and feels very authentic as a bush camp- meals are eaten all together and and breakfast is eaten sitting round the fire. Many people come back again and again & I can see why.
