Owner description: Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

“Great tour, great views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2014

Glad I went to visit. Our tour guide was great and provided a lot of historical info. The house itself is very interesting to visit, especially seeing some of the middle eastern influences. The views around the house are lovely as well. I went during the middle of winter, and I think this place would be even more stunning in either the fall or spring.

“Stunning views of the Hudson River Valley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2014

This is a must see when you come to the Hudson Valley. Painters throughout history have loved the views here - that's why Fredrick Church built this amazing home and then sculpted the landscape to provide further inspiration. Go online before you come to reserve a space to tour the inside of the home, however. I've been a number of times and haven't been able to get on the tour as it was already filled.

“Beautiful place.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2013

There is, perhaps, no need to convey that this historic site is beautiful. This is the way it was designed to look. It does carry a feeling of being in the middle of the world. The house is... eclectic. It appears much more harmonious on the outside and slightly disjointed in its mash of Victorian and "international" styles. Frederick Church was no doubt a financially successful artist. I am not an art critic, but his good taste in art did not exactly translate into making masterpiece paintings. Olana offers two kinds of tours: full and abridged. Although abridged tour is limited to the first floor, these 50 minutes provided us ample time to see what it offered to see.
