Yes, Ithaca is Gorges (the local motto and not a misprint) and Cornell University epitomizes this by being situated largely between two breathtakingly beautiful and deep gorges. Cornell has one of the most beautiful campuses in the world and is one of the most diverse in both offerings and in student body. Scholars from every state and most countries of the world attend Cornell which brings a cosmopolitan dimension to modest-sized Ithaca. (I was getting my chain saw repaired and chatted with a Russian physicist working on things I didn't understand.)

Besides its excellent academic program, Cornell hosts three world-class facilities/organizations that are open to the public--and free! Take your pick, depending on your interest:
1. Lab of Ornithology: miles of walking trails for strolling and/or bird watching; lovely visitors' center with exhibits (some interactive), viewing area, short films, etc.
2. Cornell Plantations: rhododendron garden, perennial garden, shade garden, herb garden, wildflower preserve and arboretum with deciduous trees, evergreens and flowering shrubs. Specimens are very well interpreted.
3. Johnson Museum of Art: I. M. Pei designed building and wide-ranging collection. Don't miss "the best view of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca" from the fifth floor.
Cornell is quite generous about parking, especially on weekends when it's free in many areas. Check out the parking map and policies on the Cornell website.

Cornell University is one of the prestigious Ivy League colleges. Founded in 1865, it spreads across a huge area of land overlooking Cayuga Lake. Most of the original buildings are still in tact, but many more have been and continue to be added. Cornell is partly a private University and partly a NY State school. It is well-known for its College of Arts and Sciences, as well as its Engineering, Agriculture, Hotel Management, Business, and Veterinary schools. A very diverse institution in every sense, Cornell was one of the first co-ed Universities. It contains several excellent libraries and a beautiful art museum designed by I. M. Pei. Spectacular views, walks, plantations and gorges abound. Founder, Ezra Cornell's declaration: "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study" still rings true as do the famous Clock Tower Chimes. Cornell is also home to a world-class Glee Club and many other singing and performing groups. Worth a visit, whether or not you or a family member are considering attending.
