Consistently delicious food, prompt, attentive, service, definitely worth a visit. Combination platters are extremely generous.

“Travel back to the 1950's at this Chinese/American classic in Kenmore.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2012

I'm amazed nobody has reviewed this place yet. It has been one of the gems of Kenmore, for sure. Another feather in the place's cap is their being featured in a scene of the recent movie, 'Henry's Crime' starring Keanu Reeves and James Caan. They filmed that scene at the table I'm most often seated at, and it makes me feel kind of special in a movie-nerd way.

The decor is Chinese paintings, woodwork, dragons, and fish pond with a traditional-1950's-bar-meets-Trader Vic's-tiki-lounge vibe. It is totally worth it to eat here for that one reason. They even have old-school beach drinks that were made popular in the 50s/60s Polynesian tiki craze, like the Zombie and Singapore Sling, served in that era's appropriate ceramic highball glasses and paper umbrellas.
Another reason that it is worth it to come here is the value of the meals. Plus, even the most Americanized Chinese dishes and sides are made very well (by takeout standards). The Pu Pu Platter for 2 is under 10 dollars and is a meal unto itself, not to mention it is done right, with the flame on top to char your meat skewers with. Portions are not only affordable, but gigantic. I swear they hadn't changed the prices since 1985 until just recently, as the menus looked exactly like the ones I remember from 20 years ago.
There is always yelling at/in the kitchen, which in most cases would be disturbing. Here, it adds to the old-fashioned charm of the place. Some days it seems like I am at the only table of customers the entire time I eat...other times, the upstairs is filled with busloads of Asian sightseers and the main dining room is buzzing. Never really in between.
if you are in the mood for the 1950's era polynesian/chinese restaurant theme that seems to have all but disappeared...this place should hit the spot. The food is better than your run-of-the-mill chinese takeout....but it is far from far dining. Fun for dates and families alike. Worth noting is that they offer a group-sharing-style full meal for 10 or more people, where everything on the round table can be spun around to whoever wants it.
