What can I say, first word that comes to mind is "friendly". When you arrive the owner "George" greets you and takes time to bring you to your lodge and go around it with you. If you need anything, information or just wnat to have a nice talk George and his wife are there for you.

The lodges are nor new, but comfortable, clean and have al the ammenities you need to have on vacation. Located about 1 minute walk from the lake you can even beneficiate of a little private beach.

The Balsam's also has a great pool and is a quiet & safe place for all the family. It's located about a 10 minutes walk to the grocery & downtown (main activities).

Frankly if you are lucky enough to be able to get a room, I assure you that you will have a pleasant stay. Sure it's not the Ritz but who cares, friendly, well priced & well located is better that the glitz!

I will start with the positives. SPARKLING, CLEAN POOL. CLEAN SHEETS. VILLAGE LOCATION. FRIDGE AND FLAT SCREEN in room. Now the negatives. The carpet was in bad shape. None of us would dare walk on it barefoot. The mattresses had stains. The towels had hairs embedded in them. Loose tiles on bathroom floor. The initial appearance of the room was very drab. This motel is pet friendly and it shows. I know this is not the Georgian Resort down the street, we happen to prefer smaller, rustic, hidden spots when we travel, and there are several better options than this place. Oh, be very careful with their billing procedures. All is not as it seems. Worked out in the end, but getting a straight answer was tough to do. Beware of Suzanne, she is not a happy person.

I stayed at The Balsam in August. We go to Lake George every summer and this summer we made sure to return to The Balsam. Last year we stayed somewhere else and we wished we were at The Balsam! It is clean, calm, quiet, and woodsy. The owners are so friendly and they help you with everything you need. If you want crowded, commotion, and kids everywhere- do not go here. If you are looking for a peaceful experience in Lake George- The Balsam is your place.

My husband and i have been coming to the balsam for only two years, but since we found the place last year there is no other place we would rather stay. We brought our parents with us for memorial day weekend and had a blast! Now we are coming back to spend our last summer hurrah weekend there. Awesome owners very family oriented and you get treated as part of the family!!! Never felt more welcome anyplace else except home.

Room Tip: the cabins are great for long stays all the ammenities of home for a reasonable place

Stayed at the Balsam last summer. The owner, George, was very friendly and he gave us some great suggestion on places to eat. This year we were happy to stay there again. They place looked great and seemed like some renovations have been done. Then we came back one afternoon and found our door wide open with the key in it. Nobody was in sight and fortunately all our belongings were there. I went down to talk to the owners. When i got to the office the other owner, Suzanne, was in the office watching tv so I told her what happened. Her response was "oh yeah, that was me. Don't worry about it. I meant to come back with towels and forgot because it was raining." No apology or inquiry if all our belongings were ok. Really troubled by how it didn't bother her at all that our room had been left unsecured. I know you take your risks with motels but totally different when its due to carelessness on the owners part. My jewelry was in a bag on the dresser and could have easily been gone along with any other belongings. Not to mention on our second night one of the other guests spent the night smoking pot once the office closed so our entire room smelled like it. We've really liked the Balsam but don't know that I would want to take the chance of staying there again.

It was so nice to find cottages that would allow a dog in Lake George. Our cottage was roomy and close to the pool and office. It was great being able to wake up and walk my dog down to the little beach at Lake Avenue- she had a grand time swimming. We liked the location being a little further from the crowds but still within walking distance of everything we wanted to see in town. The cottages are all shaded and although right on Canada Street there was very little noise at night. George and Suzanne were always available. The pool was great- our 14 year old son had the best time swimming.

My wife and I stumbled upon the Balsam last year because we like to vacation with our dogs. Finding a pet-friendly motel is never easy, but this was a real find. The cottage we were booked into was enormous, clean, located a few steps away from the pool, and had a small private deck. The owners, George and Suzanne are friendly, always present, and as accommodating as you could ever want.
This year we returned, and spent two weeks there again, and this time we found that staying there felt like staying with family, if your family was not dysfunctional. George and Suzanne made us feel at home, and when it was time to leave, we left as friends, not just as guests of their establishment.
I would recommend that anyone looking for a comfortable place to stay in the heart of the village consider staying at the Balsam.
