It is hard to find anything positive about the rooms of this hotel: they are old and worn out. If you are planning to spend a lot of time in the hotel room, this definitely is not the one to choose. There are, however, some good things about this hotel: the lobby has old-fashioned, decorated wooden ceiling, giving it nice olden-days atmosphere. The restaurant balcony is also a bonus. It is possible to eat breakfast out there, as well as have meals. Wifi was available in the lobby. And it is close to the center.

This hotel has only one thing going for it: location. The rooms are worn and full of fleas and insects, and there always seems to be something broken. The restaurant is surprisingly good, however, and the location is lovely.

For some reason this hotel seems to be very popular with international visitors. However, I found it grubby and out-dated, poorly lit with cheaply carved wooden furniture and furnishings out of the 1960s. The corridors are lined with ragged strips of burgundy ‘carpet’, the rooms are old-fashioned and in a poor state of repair. Mine had a rigged up electric shower heater which felt quite dangerous. The window didn't shut properly as the frame had rotted and warped, and I got mosquitoes a night. I also had a severe case of bed bugs and spent the next two days scratching my Bahir Dar itches. Breakfast was the usual cheap white crumbly toast and eggs, plus a glass of rather unpleasant pawpaw juice. It was redeemed by the ubiquitous macchiato. It was mango season and it would have taken no effort to offer some fresh fruit.

Granted, the rate was low (I paid Br 480, about GBP 16, and I heard other guests negotiating less for longer stays). But for a hotel that styles itself as ‘international standard’ and clearly attracts many tour firms catering for overseas visitors, it would do better by charging slightly more and investing in serious renovation. As Ethiopia’s tourism industry grows, there needs to be more awareness of what the foreign visitor expects – cleanliness is a basic minimum.

Decent enough place with a great location close to Lake Tana. The water is hit and miss which is annoying but not the end of the world. The view of the main street is nice and if you are on the 1st level (what we call 2nd level in NA) you can see the Lake. The restaurant is decent as well. The staff could be friendlier but they weren't rude, just not extremely helpful. Also, they forgot to pre-book our minibus to Gonder which caused a bit of a problem, but more of a minor inconvenience. Bring a mosquito net also, there are a billion in Bahir Dar and the nets always have holes.

Where does one start about this place. We had booked a twin room, and yes that's what we got, but the headboard had been sawn in half to make to, the table was in half, this was taking all to literally. Toilets, well 50 50 chance of them working. Running water not at all times and hot water was a luxury. I went to turn on the side light only to find that no plug on the end. The power points did not work which meant having to leave our phones at reception which was that secure. This area is said to be not got for malaria and this hotel had no nets and windows that did not shut. There was however a hook on the ceiling to take a net. Not a hotel I would go to again.

This is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The staff is very rude and the place is very noisy. The toilet had a broken seat and didn't flush. The rugs are stained. The window curtains didn't cover anything. I hated that place and will never recommend. Right after we saw the room, the staff said we couldn't get a refund.

The rooms are a bit tired, but apparently it's being refurbished. The WiFi was blisteringly fast which was a refreshing change (the router was right outside our room). We had hot water for the showers the whole time we were there, and breakfast was provided in the room rate each morning. Reception wasn't that friendly or very much help when it came to recommending tourist attractions or helping with organising etc, but the Ghion Hotel down the road organises daily trips to the falls and to the monastries. The price was reasonable - Birr330 a night for a twin with ensuite and breakfast included. We had a lake view and experienced no power cuts while staying there. The restaurant serves acceptable food for dinner, but across the road at Lake Short Restaurant is better for a meal right on the lake.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a lake view. A room further away from the restaurant balcony is quieter. If...
