“Truly beautiful!”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

To start with what a beautiful and heavenly place! The lodge sits atop a high plateau, overlooking a stunning topography. You can also spot lammergeyers soaring the skies and gelada baboons roaming the plateau. The sunset is amazing. We also went hiking with one of their guide (Mr. Molla) who took us to the neighboring mountains and villages. After climbing further steep cliffs you will get to an even higher plateau inhabited by warm villagers and cheerful kids.

The huts of the lodge are beautiful and cozy, the food is delicious and the staff are very welcoming . We thank Mr. Mesfin, who is the supervisor of the community lodge, for organizing everything we could possibly need. They gave us foot massages, campfires and warm water bottles to heat up our cold beds in the night. We recommend this place to anyone that wants a peaceful mountain retreat and do some hiking!

Our visit to Lalibela Hudad was exceptional. Perched on a very high plateau in the highlands it is exciting as well as serene. The property itself is huge and can easily be explored on foot. The units are well spaced, offering total privacy. Our guide, Derebe, was superb and led us on beautiful half day hikes to villages in the mountains. If you can, be sure to request his services. Mesfin, the owner, is completely committed to making your stay enjoyable, and the staff are warm and caring. We ate our meals either looking out over the hills, or around the fire at night. If you are looking for a combination of wonderful walking, good Ethiopian food, incomparable beauty and time for reflection, you can't ask for a better place.

Room Tip: All rooms seem comparable. Ours was closest to the main lodge, which was convenient.

As others have set, the Hudad Eco Lodge (as I think its called) is a wonderful, special place and the highlight of our trip. The only caveat is that you need to be fit enough to hike about 2 1/2 hours up a steep and rocky climb to the lodge, and you will potentially walk more once you get there. So please make sure you can do this. There is no running water or electricity, but at every meal they will bring you warm water and soap for your hands and the tukul toilet has a beautiful view. The food was some of the best we had in the country, and was organic. Mesfin, the owner, is very engaging and enjoys talking about whatever country you are from. We were part of an evening's gathering of local villagers who enjoyed our company and they danced some traditional dances and sang. The way down is also a challenging hike, and my suggestion is to arrange a taxi to pick you up at the starting point of the road. Otherwise it is another hour walk down to Lalibela, which was more tiring than interesting at that point. There are 4 Tukuls at the lodge, and it would be a lot of fun to go with a small group. One additional tip, it is cold up there, but they provide sweaters and blankets to wrap around you by the campfire if needed, so don't worry about taking lots of extra warm things. We only took a few things from Lalibela, which were placed on a donkey and climbed along with us - guided by a lodge staff person.

This is a very special place- you will love it-. Think of it more as ( extremely) luxury camping than a guest house. It's quite wild- I came down to lalibela for Easter afterwards and missed the quietness and beauty. You will be one of only a few guests - so it's very special. That said- the attention to detail- somehow without you even noticing- is something I don't see in fancy restaurants and hotels in major cities! Somehow you are always satisfied and the service is a step ahead- in an unobtrusive way. The outdoor compost loos are amazing- no smell at all! very Eco friendly loo with a view. Campfires every night complete with locals dropping by for a chat. Very lovely. If you don't want to walk/ meditate/ do your own thing then bring something to do though as you are two hours from town. Really a very very wonderful place that I will remember forever and if I return to Ethiopia I would definitely come back. Ask for Derebe as your guide :) he's great !

Its taken me 3 years to write this but I've never forgotten this place. We had an amazing experience from the donkey ride up the mountain, to the amazing Tukel, to the baboons all over the place and the foot washing ceremony. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone.

This was my first time to Ethiopia and Hudad therefore I wasn't sure what to expect.
It takes 3hur to walk from lalibela to Hudad. As soon as we arrived we spotted group of Chelada Baboon, The 360 degree panorama view from Hudad is Amazing! The service was wonderful. From the beginning to the last day, They are always trying to make your stay more comfortable. The evenings were wonderful by the fire. We had diner under stars and moon, the campfire with traditional dance was interesting, yes the foot massage is a great tradition!
Our guide molla Kassaw who recommend by a friend, he speaks excellent English and very knowledgeable, he does try His best to ensure that you understand everything around you. Basics with capital 'B'. What else do we need? Feeling cared for by the local staff: helping hands on the way up and down, delicious meals, foot massage, finding hot water bottels in bed each night etc. Ahh, the silence, the magnificent views in all directions and last but not least: the stars!
